Right now, i am currently watching game 6 of the 1996 nba finals, and i am amazed at how big of a turning point COULD have happened. The bulls won game 6 by a mere 12 points (and tbh, it felt more like 6 or 7 points).
It was a close game to the very end, and the sonics could have won that game.
People always talk about how the jazz were the closest team to beating mj's bulls in the 90s, but for me, it is the sonics.
Les be honest here, the jazz were NEVER close to beating the bulls in BOTH 97 and 98. They got a scare in game 5 1997 with mj's flu, but thats it. MJ and his bulls had it covered.
In the 1996 finals, i truely feel like had luck swung a little toward the sonics, they would have won.
Game 4 and 5 were EASILLY won by the sonics, kemp was a beast (played like garntt/duncan). Gary Payton played like a hybrid of lebron james, bruce bowen, shane battier, and grant hill. Gary Payton was the ONLY player in nba HISTORY to be able to somewhat stop MJ.
In games 4 and 5, Payton was on par with Jordan. In other words, for those 2 games, Payton was as good as Jordan.
Game 6 could have easily gone to the Sonics, and then the Bulls would have had to face a game 7 for the first time in their Finals history. The Bulls could have gone into panic mode, and with the momentum, the Sonics could have won 4 straight to win the championship.
This is legitimate, this could have very well happened. Payton was a beast, Jordan was good, but not Jordan good, and Kemp was playing like the GOAT PF.
What do you think?

The suns were close as well.
However, in both the suns series and the 2 jazz series, i felt that MJ had it all under control.
The sonics series, everything was in Gary Payton's control, sadly, he let it go in game 6, which could have gone Seattle's way

I doubt the bulls were bored, cause if they were, game 6 would have been a blowout. Instead, the sonics nearly took it to game 7 on MJ'S HOMECOURT. Mj would have made it tough, but this sonics team had a chance. And I agree that anyone but the 96 bulls and the sonics would have won.

Honestly, I don't know what version of the 96 Finals you were watching, but realistically the Bulls had this game in the bag with a good 3-4 minutes left. They were up 87-70 with 50 seconds left, after a Pip 3 pointer. Jordan started celebratinng, hugging the coaching staff with 20 seconds left. The Bulls toyed with the Sonics during this series.
If any team came close to a game 7, it was the Suns, who were a wide open Paxon 3 from winning, with honorable mention going to the 98 Jazz, who were up 86-83 against the Bulls in game 6, with 41 seconds left. That of course led to the Jordan layup-steal-jumpshot sequence that became so famous.
Seriously, some of these Threads lately have me convinced that ISH posters have been replaced by Pod-People, who were given an hour long crash course on NBA history, before coming to this planet.

Alot of the teams that came out of the West during the mid-late 90's were darn right unimpressive when you look at their roster.
Hakeem only had role players around him, no way that '96 Sonics' team wins 64 games in today's NBA, & the Jazz didn't look like championship contenders on paper.

Are the teams you mentioned any less impressive than the Bulls team that had the best record in the league over the last two years? Or the Mavs that won the championship in 11? That 96 Sonics team was damn good. The Jazz were the most talented team, but theey got by on grit, great coaching and defense. As well as an efficient offense.
Youre alway downplaying the teams of the 90s. How many great teams did the 80s Celtics to win their three championships?

The game was very competitive
The bulls just got on a bit of run late in the 4th. The sonics were down by single digits most of the game. Plus, the suns and jazz NEVER had any shot. Game 7 was the bulls, without question. In the sonic series, it was different. Jordan was actually STRUGGLING a bit, cause Payton was defensively amazing. With Jordan having his WORST finals series, the sonics had a shot better than anyone else to take out air jordan

Dude, I don't care how close a game is early on, or "most of the game". If you're down by 17 with 50 seconds left, you aren't that "close" to a game 7, sorry. I gave you 2 other specific examples of what "close" is, yet you're still hanging on to the Sonics, for whatever reason.

Really though. Pip had a huge clutch Jump Hook shot in the paint, late in the game, where he barely got off the ground. I believe Pip would have played in game 7, and continued to receive medicine shots to his ailing back, but realistically, even MJ didn't like those odds. That's one of the reasons I believe he attacked like he did at the end of the game, just to wrap the series up.

Most of us used Finals teams, because that's what the Sonics were. The 92 Knicks also took the Bulls to 7 as well. This thread is about a potential Game 7 though, not a real one.

Err, those Sonics easily win 60+ games today. A top 3 PG who is also DPOY, a top 2-3 PF, a former 20 ppg SG who can still give you 20 on any given night, the 6MOY who is a versatile 16/6/5 type of player, a savvy stretch 4/5 in Perkins, and scrappy, tough-nosed defenders in McMillan and Askew. They definitely win 60+.

Another example of the "Old player/Old Team would have this much more success today". LOL at all you idiots who said it doesnt happen on this forum.
