Shaq legacy is hurt in LA because of two things...
He b*tched his way out yelling at Dr. Buss to pay him after years and years coming in to the season overweight.
He also played for the Celtics....YOU DON'T DO THAT IF YOU WANT TO BE A LEGENDARY LAKER.
it should be placed outside of an in-n-out before staples center.

I think Kobe and Shaq will get one statue together, I don't think either of them did enough without the other to warrant single statues, together they were unstoppable.

Kobe has won 5 titles with the Lakers, he is the franchise's all time leading scorer, has the most All-Star MVP's, Scored 81 points in a game..........You clearly weren't thinking when you typed this, it's ok.

You don't think winning three consecutive titles and having arguably the most dominant peak ever, best Finals performances ever in a Lakers uniform merits consideration? LAL got his entire peak from 1998-03. Faced elimination seven times over that span while Shaq dropped 33/13/3 on 56% FG in those games. With a 59% TS in case anybody's interested. Averaged 30/15/3 over the 58-game playoff three-peat; 38/17/3 in 2000 Finals, 33/16/5 in 2001 Finals, 36/12/3 in 2002 Finals. Was the centerpiece and essential to a 67-win season and 15-1 postseason (along with Kobe).
That's not legendary?
Shaq will get a statue outside the staples Center. He's arguably the most dominant Finals performer in Lakers franchise history. D1cklakers is suffering from Alzheimer disease. The guy is in his late 50's.

You know, the idea of a Shaq-Kobe statue ain't half bad. Those two together created a pretty fun to watch dynamic duo. If there egos weren't so damn big who knows what could have happened.
Regardless, if any of those two is getting a statue, it's Kobe. He's spent his whole career in LA like Jerry and Magic, both of whom have a statue.

If you look deeper, you see that Shaq is holding or "carrying" Kobe. That was young Kobe, too.
I think it'd be cool to have them both, but standing together. Shaq probably won't get one, though.

I just want to say.;...I hate the way the statues are laid out currently at Staples. There is no flow to them. They look like they just placed them any where. Maybe it is the designer in me. But really Magic's statue was cool then they started laying the rest of them every where.
And as much as I like Oscar De La Hoya....he should not be in front of Staples.

i think its ludicrous and appalling that anybody would say Shaq shouldnt get a statue. In the history of the NBA only 5 teams have accomplished a 3peat,
1952–54 Minneapolis Lakers, 1959–66 Boston Celtics (Eight Championships), 1991–93 Chicago Bulls, 1996–98 Chicago Bulls, 2000–02 Los Angeles Lakers
Of those teams look at the teams best players
1952–54 Minneapolis Lakers - George Mikan - Has a statue at Target Center
1959-66 Boston Celtics - Bill Russell - Getting a statue next year (http://radioboston.wbur.org/2012/05/18/bill-russell-statue)
1991-93 & 96-98 Bulls - Jordan - Has a statue at United Center
Now i think its pretty stupid that somebody would argue against Shaq having a statue. If Kobe was going to get one then i think Shaq deserves to be in there before Kobe does, Laker fans use Kobes championships as their arguments substance all the time so therefore its obvious championships are what they value most, no? So therefore the players who as the leader win championships should be remember and therefore Shaq 3> has a better case than Kobe 2. Three-peats are ridiculous impressive, they never happen, it takes special players to win them as you can see by the small list ( Mikan,Russell,Jordan,Shaq)
EDIT: Not saying that Kobe dosnt deserve one BTW. Just that Shaq deserves it more.

mikan should have a statue outside staples. hes part of laker history. where a team plays doesnt matter. its the name and players that do.

It's not a numbers game. It's a popularity thing. Titles have nothing to do with, numbers have nothing to do with it. Who gets a statue is based on popularity with the fans and with the ownership of the Lakers. Shaw burned a lot of ground when he left LA, threw a lot of very important people under the bus including Buss and Mitch. He'll be lucky if he gets his jersey retired before Kobe.
I know, i was just saying based on the facts of actual performance and what should happen Shaq's more deserving than most. I personally dont think he will and i posted on the first page saying he probably wont.

If you believe that both players should get a statue, then Shaq's should naturally be first. It's a timing matter. Shaq is older, retired first, jersey retired first and ended his time as a laker first. It's just a matter of chronological order.
To be honest, Kareem should have had one before Magic.

Sorry, that's an un-informed argument, Kobe has played his ENTIRE CAREER with the Lakers winning 5 titles.....more than Shaq, almost 3 peating WITHOUT SHAQ......SHAQ never went to 2 straight finals without Kobe.
Kobe is the Lakers All-Time Leading scorer, Has the Highest scoring game as a Laker with 81......Shaq's highest was 61, Kobe's All-star MVP awards were all as a Laker...the most of any NBA player. Kobe has the most All-NBA 1st team and total All-NBA team votes.
The next statues should be Elgin Baylor then Kobe, then Shaq.
Facts are facts, Kobe VERY CLEARLY deserves it much more than Shaq.....it's not even remotely close.

It's not uninformed what so ever, it showed what had been done in the past of equal greatness and the outcomes. In terms of championships you can't deny that had Shaq not been on the 3peat teams then not one of those championships would have been won therefore they are clearly Shaqs titles and he deserves full recognition for them. Sure Kobe's resume says 5 championships but in reality he only has two for which he can be credited for. It's not hate, bias or anything it's just undeniable that without Shaq those championships do not occur. Secondly Shaq didn't play his whole career as a laker and obviously that means he didn't have the same aura and association with the lakers as Kobe does. But Shaq would have stayed in LA if it were not for the Kobe-Shaq feud so it's not as if he walked out on the franchise there just came a cross roads were management made the smart decision and stuck with the young upcoming star.
And scoring is all good and well, bravo on the 81 point game but that doesn't have the same value as a 3-peat. Single game performances are impressive and all but the real deal comes from championships and Shaq put three together in a row and like I said only Shaq Mikan Jordan and Russell managed to do that so in terms of winning contributions to a franchise Shaq trumps Kobe. In terms of importance to the franchise from all other aspects Kobe trumps Shaq. but ask players what matters championships, ask fans what they want , championships. It's pretty clear.

Basically...
Lakers don't win any of those three titles without Shaq.. He made everything happen. He scared defenses to death. made teams collapse on him in the paint and it opened up everything for the fishers and Horry's, glen rice's of the world. Kobe was a young up and coming star, but no way could he carry those teams...

That's the point people seem to be missing in this discussion.
It's not about title runs, it's about being a Laker for 17 years vs. Shaq's 8
It's about going down as arguably the greatest Laker ever
It's about representing the city
Kobe has become a global icon, He's far and away more beloved in the city of LA than Shaq ever was.
I said it before it's not about numbers it's a popularity contest and Kobe wins. He wins it in the Laker front office, he wins in the halls of Staples Center and he wins it on the streets of Los Angeles.
I wonder how many people trying to promote Shaq in this thread are actually Lakers fans? Normally I don't fandom plays a part in a discussion but this is one where fans should carry the loudest voice

Kobe will get his statue first because he will most likely be a lifelong Laker. Athlough Shaq was the guts of the 2000-2002 champs, there is too much bad blood between him and the Buss' to get a statue any time soon.

This is hilarious.
It's funny watching non-Lakers fans talk about this.
Kobe will go down with Magic as the two most beloved sports figures in LA, period. And not just basketball. Magic Johnson is still a GOD in LA, and Kobe has already reached that status.
Shaq could have been there, but he made his own bed.
You don't curse out the owner and get a statue outside of Staples.
Shaq has actually been very complimentary of the Lakers franchise and Kobe Bryant in recent years. I think he realizes how good he had it in LA, and how different the franchise is from the rest of the ones he played on. You can just tell that he would have done things differently if he could go back in time...

LA fans will go nuts for Shaq when he gets his jersey retired this year. There have been bad feelings, yes, but no one in LA underestimates anything he has done for the franchise. He was amazing, and 2000 Shaq was the most dominant player I have ever seen.
Better than any Jordan, Kobe, Magic, Bird, Dream, or anyone I saw at their peak. 2000 Shaq was the very definition of a BEAST.
Lakers haters don't understand why Lakers fans get mad when they talk about Shaq carrying that team. It's not that he didn't carry them, it's that he wasn't carrying them alone. When you use Shaq as an example to tear down Kobe, us Lakers fans will call you on your bullshit, because it's obvious most people never saw those Lakers teams religiously.
That team was so unstoppable not because it had a good 1-2 punch, it was unstoppable because it had 2 of the top 5 players in the NBA at their PRIME.
And, unlike Wade and Lebron or any other 1-2 punch, the Lakers had it set up perfectly. Get a great big man and get a great wing player. It's like a GM's wet dream.
Anyways, carry on...

Clearly kobe, no debate. Funny how the main ones saying shaq are also the main kobe haters. Hilarious. Kobe has spent his entire 16 year career as a laker and means more to the franchise than shaq. No one gives a damn about "stats, dominat player ever, more fmvps, carry another bs, per lol". Kobe kept and even expanded the lakers global popularity over the last ten years. He has broken nearly every laker franchise record possible and makes the organization so much money. By the end of his career he is def gunna challenge magic as greatest laker ever. Shaq left la not mainly bc of the fues with kobe, but bc he was 34 and demanded like 30mil and buss didnt wanna pay that. He and buss dont have the best relationship. Shaq may get a statue, but not before kobe.

Kobe, and it's not even debatable. Stop bringing up stats, because it's irrelevant. No one denies that Kareem is statically "better" than Magic and was with the franchise longer, but who got the statue first? Yeah, Kobe threw a fit and wanted to be traded, but Magic also acted like a bitch and got his coach fired. None of this means anything. A child who was born when Kobe was drafted by the Lakers is nearing graduation now, so throughout their entire life, the Lakers franchise = Kobe Bryant. It doesn't matter how much you hate him, or how ill-advised some of his decisions are. He is the face of the franchise. He's been there his entire career. When people think of this team now they think of Kobe.
The argument over who's "better" is stupid and irrelevant here. Kobe deserves the statue more than Shaq.

Shaq burned every bridge possible on his way out of L.A. to South Beach. He ripped Buss, he ripped Kupchak, the organization, the town, the fans - everything. He continued to take shots blatant and indirectly, at the city and franchise.
He will have his jersey retired , but I don't see him getting a statue anytime in the near future.
Kobe, and I'm not even a fan of his. Not sure what Shaq's 3 titles as "the man" have to do with Bryant's 5 titles...and him getting a statue before Shaq.
"Rings as the man" is a faux category. It's not even a real category, yet people throw it out as a statistical category. Does anyone outside of ISH and similar sites comprised of a tiny fraction of hardcore elitist fans care about this? This is a rhetorical question. No one does. Rings are rings. Walk into the local sports bar tonight and ask people how many rings Kobe, or for that matter Shaq or Magic or Kareem have. 5, 4, 5 and 6. IMO there are 4 people who deserve a statue outside staples.
Magic
West
Kobe
Chick Hearn
Kareem and Shaq did alot for the franchise and the Lakers wouldn't be the Lakers without their all star big men but the 4 men above were Lakers for their whole career and that is what I think earns them a statue. If the lakers start building statues for all their franchise players then pretty soon there will be no room.
Why isn't a retired jersey good enough for Kareem and Shaq?

For those who are saying Shaquille should get a statue don't know the meaning behind theses statues. Currently Gretzky, Magic, Chick, Oscar and soontobe Kareem are the only ones with statues outside staples. They all have one thing in common, all are LA sports legends. It's not just about stats, it's about represent the city. When people think of La sports history, these are the names that are synonymous with LA. Bases on these merits, I believe Kobe will have his own statue one day. Kareem didn't spend his whole career has a lakers, but people forget his Ucla career. 4 straight NCAA championship. Many consider him has the greatest college basketball player ever.

You don't know what you're talking about. They hated him, but that was in the past. Lakers fans were over Shaq, as was the franchise, pretty much soon after the trade. We were really done with him after the 3 straight finals runs and 2 chips.
Here's the thing about the Lakers: No player is bigger than the team. Not Shaq, not Kobe, not Magic, not anyone. It's a machine that keeps on churning out championship caliber teams no matter what. As Buss showed Shaq, you **** with the owner, he will not put up with it.
You want to see how well run the organization is? Look at the fall-out of the vetoed CP3 trade. For most franchises a trade like that is a monumental moment in franchise history. The Houston Rockets still haven't recovered from that veto, and their GM was quoted as saying it set them back 3 years.
The Lakers? The CP3 veto will be just a footnote in their history. They just keep on moving. Brush the shoulders off and keep it moving
My point is that the Shaq break-up might be a point fans of other teams would never live down, but not Lakers fans. He's a big dude, but the Lakers shadow makes him but a bit player in a huge orchestra. Shaq will be shown love by Lakers fans when his jersey goes up in the rafters, because Lakers fans aren't that petty. We appreciate greatness, and Shaq learned a lesson after becoming a joke his last years in the league: there is no franchise out there as well run and with as good a winning culture as the Lakers. That is why he has changed his tune.

Shaq was definitively the best player in the league from 97-02. Here is the group of players who led the league in PER for 5 straight years:
Wilt
Kareem
Jordan
Shaq
LeBron
Thats the list.

I said that Kobe will. Its obvious Kobe will hes a legend in LA DUUUH. But that does not mean Shaq dosnt deserve one hes as deserving as anybody, because as i showed earlier only a small elite group of players have lead a team to a 3-peat.
And no Rings as the lead dog is not bullshit in this case when it is as clear as day that without Shaq on those teams they are not in any way shape or form championship teams. Everybody knows this. And NO it dosnt mean that Kobe only has two rings i think its quite clear to everybody that he has 5, he deserves credit for what he did on those three teams especially the last two and he fully deserves those rings. But they do not prop up his resume because those rings all come down to Shaq. Without Shaq those rings dont happen but take away kobe and replace him with a similar player and Shaq probably still wins championships, thats how dominate he was. P

All i was saying is that Shaq SHOULD have one. Then people said he shouldnt have one at all and i was merely showing that he should in fact have a statue. Since i dont have a dog in the fight im just saying how it should be. Both should have statues. Obviously i know Kobe means more to the franchise than Shaq and through my comments ive shown that. All i was saying is that Shaq SHOULD have one. Then people said he shouldnt have one at all and i was merely showing that he should in fact have a statue. I dont believe i said he should have one over Kobe, as i said the whole time i didnt even think Shaq would get one as i understand the dynamic between Shaq and the franchises leaders.
If Shaq doesn't get a statue it's his own damn fault. You don't curse out your boss, act unprofessionally and then burn your bridges on your way out of town and expect people to kiss your ass like it's candy.
