In Basketball it's not always just the "flashy" moves that make a player great...it's the small details...the little things that seperate great players from thier peers.

only fitting ...I present Bird and Magic

Magic Johnson's The NO LOOK PASS>>>>>>>>>

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XWnLNpgdTWw/TcoZHVCeqWI/AAAAAAAAAB8/gs8S5XRv_3w/s1600/Earvin%2BMagic%2BJohnson%2Bal%2Bpassaggio.jpeg

( funny part is...Derek Harper is looking up...Aguirre is looking at the right baseline..and the ball goes left)

- Many players can throw a "no look"..often times during a game the oppurtunity presents itself to quikly pass to a teammate...then turn your head quikly to the opposite side.....

- But Magic seemed to have played basketball in another life....he knew where everyone was going to be..before it happened.....

he never just came acroos a no look play by just playing...HE CREATED THE PLAY FROM SCRATCH!..he would ball fake ( not just a subtle fake...show the ball and turn his head...only to drop it off on the other side)...back down his defender and knowing where his teamate/opposite side defender was....throw a perfect no look pass to a cutting teammate!

Showing the ball with one hand

Backing down / waiting for a cutting teammate

Magic drives left...starts to back down his defender..waits for Worthy so he can throw a no look pass>>>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4Dm0lZTqCc&feature=player_detailpage#t=120s

back his defender down (acting as if he's going to try and get a shot) in order to decieve his defender...throws a no look>>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4Dm0lZTqCc&feature=player_detailpage#t=191s

Not sure if bieng so tall and needing a high dribble affected his passing...but he was maybe the best one handed passer ever....he would literally show the defender the ball with one hand...and pass to the opposite side>>>

Larry Legend's shooting

http://rolandopastor.com/larrybird1987.gif

Larry Bird knew how to create just enough space to get his shot anywhere on the court...

- He was excellent at coming off a screen and catching and shooting (with or without taking a dribble)

- He could go one on one and step back or pull up..

- he could back you down in the post and fadeaway or up fake you to get you out of position

coupled with bieng 6'10" and having a great high release.....he was nearly ugaurdable...bieng able to shoot over his left and right...he had no weak hand or weak side.

he knew how to shoot...he knew how to get his shot...and he loved burying J's in your eye all night long...

many players emulate Bird today....PPierce (steps back)...Nowitzki fallaway...etc.

Part of what made Magic Johnson appear to have surreal vision was that he was one of the first guys to realize that by focusing on the rim you can always see the other 9 men on the floor.

His high dribble also seemed to help him..also seemed to help his passing off of the dribble.

But if you do Barkley's rebounding, you should compare with Rodman's rebounding..

But if you do Barkley's rebounding, you should compare with Rodman's rebounding..

Barkley's gonna have Rodman licked with his offensive outbursts though. Can't leave those out either. And while Barkley was a more "pure" rebounder, Rodman was a "tip the ball to myself by missing shots I have no business missing" type rebounder.

But if you do Barkley's rebounding, you should compare with Rodman's rebounding..

Difference was that Barkley was Not Just Rebounding But Scoring, Recieving Double Teams, Creating, Passing, Stealing etc had More Resonsabilities as a Superstar.

Still They Where Both The Best Rebounders of Their Era and at 6`4 3/4 ft for Barkley and Barely 6`7 ft for Rodman.

- Rodman always seemed to be able to out hustle and out Jump his opponent...and was an amzing player to watch doing those things...but the worm was limited in the sense that it was hard for him to make plays after the fact..

- Barkley always seemed to combine the rebound with a slight play afterward..whether it was an offensive rebound followed by a monsterous Dunk...or pass to a open teammate...or a defensive rebound to a full court pass or taking a defensive rebound all the way for a slam...

- He seemed to use the time from rebounding it to create a play...he was such a great rebounder and used that time ( when the defense wasn'ts set) to create oppurtunity...

- Combined that he wasn't as athletic / tall as his opponents...he was a awesome player to watch..especially live....watched him vs the Kings in 93'   the man was electric.

There Should Also Be Some Picture With Motion of Bird`s Passing.

As a "Pure Passer" not Creator (ballhandling) he is the Best Ever. He Could Hit You With Passes In a Crafty Way That Was Magical Too.

i'm sorry but do u know of a man named Bob Cousy? almost 20 years he was doing what "pistol" did before pistol...

i'm sorry but do u know of a man named bob cousy? almost 20 years he started before maravich?

Specifically the no look pass started with Bob Cousy probably in the NBA... but Maravich took it to a whole different level meanwhile innovating literally speaking all types of passes... including many ballhandling moves and scoring moves..

behind the back to a backdoor cut, behind the back to layup, two-handed scoops and feeds, no-look back dishes were all cousy....not to mention his dribble down skills

i'm not disagreeing with you tho, i admit pete took it to a whole new level....but gotta give credit where credit is due - cousy was showtime before pete and magic..

This is what I tell young people, Magic's assists were REAL assists.....I wish they would stop calling simple common ho-hum passes ASSISTS as if a trained monkey couldn't do it. (I also wish they would give assists for a great pass that led to 2 free throws) Magic did this stuff all game, every game....and at full speed. I would watch games and he'd throw a pass that seemed like it must be going out of bounds but it was right to a teammate for an easy basket.
There has never been a comparable point guard to Magic.....NEVER.
The guy saw the entire floor like no one else ever has, I have no idea how it's possible to do what he did without having 10 eyes or being able to stop time......how the hell do you completely fake out 5 guys AND everyone watching over and over? The most apt nickname in basketball history.
And Larry was Brilliant beyond belief too but in his own way.....other than Magic, he was always the smartest craftiest, most cocky guy on the floor and he could completely back it up.
Watching these clips gave me severe goosebumps....GREAT THREAD OP

I agree with this, it's the evolution of the game. Guys learn from the greats who came before them. It's a damn shame that the Center position in the NBA has collapsed so badly, it would've been great if there was a "Sky Hook" shooting Center who could take what Kareem did to another level.

Not really true at all..

- even Maravich's own dad has said that he learned the "flashy style" from watching the Harlem Globetrotters and meadowlark Lemon..( I would say they ( HG) had as much influence on the flashy no look style as anyone)

and even though both the Pistol and the Globetrotters ( when they were world famous) were a little before my era.....I think most Basketball fans will think of Magic Johnson when they here a " No Loook Pass"

- Like I said earlier..I never really followed Pistol's career ( before my time) ..but he always seemed to look like a scared mouse trying to make a basket....

Magic looked like he was a kid in a candy store when he played....you could tell he was in his world playing basketball....and his Passing captured the audience more then any passer ever...

of course just my opinion....and I'm a little/lot bias :confusedshrug:
