When training camp opens next month, Greg Somogyi will hold one distinction not even All-Star big men Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol can match: tallest Laker.

How long the 7-foot-3 center graces the Lakers' roster is another matter.

The Lakers signed the former UC Santa Barbara player to a non-guaranteed contract Wednesday and extended an invitation to training camp as the team fills out the margins of its roster for practice purposes.

Like former UCLA forward Reeves Nelson, whom the Lakers also signed as expected Wednesday, Somogyi is the longest of longshots to make the team. Somogyi went undrafted after averaging 3.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 12.2 minutes during his four seasons with the Gauchos.

Somogyi played for the Lakers' summer league team in July, averaging 1.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 7.2 minutes.

the beast has arrived

This guy is going to get heavy minutes to start the season since Howard will need time to heal that back..unless he rushes and risks hurting his back more. Throw the rookie into the fire.

PER 36 mins that is 4.5 BPG :O

a true defensive force, when dwight's in the bench there will be zero dropoff on the defensive end. Mitch Kupchak did it again:cheers:

It's very hard for guys like him to put on muscle mass, it's not same for him and some 5'11 average guy...

true. im 6 foot and have trouble putting on mass, so i could only imagine how difficult it would be for someone over a foot taller than me to do so.

shawn bradley 2.0.
Not saying Shawn Bradley was a good player by any means, but the Lakers would be THRILLED if this guy turned into Shawn Bradley. Shawn Bradley at one point at least could give you 8-10 points and rebounds and 2-3 blocks. This guy isn't expected to even make the roster.

Greg Somogyi...

7'3", 240 pound center with a 7'9" wingspan from Budapest, Hungary, averaged 12.2 minutes per game throughout his four years as a Gaucho.

240 is decent for 7`3``

Dude was a scrub throughout the Big West but could be a nice insurance backup for 2 minutes and 3 fouls a game.
