Lets face it, the majority of fights that go down in the NBA are sloppy at best. Regardless of their skill level almost all nba players are huge, strong elite athletes so it's fun to think about it(Jordan was once offered huge $ to fight Hollyfield lol, woulda been ugggggly haha). Mason & Oakley come to mind for being completely nuts (Mason would have laid Oakley out btw), but Starks and Ewing were also some of the meanest and most proud competitors ever. when it comes to fighting there are three types of men:

Real Tough Guy: They don't back down from fights... they are not very smart, because they will fight even if the odds of winning are low. To them fighting is about proving something to themselves, not about winning or losing.

Im not going to attempt to tell which NBA players fall under this category or which not because RTGs are hard to spot, but im going to tell you that RTGs usually don't bully and theres some aura of silence and mystery around them.

Fake Tough Guy: They are QUITE smart... They excel at picking up victims, they care about winning and looking good in the process, so they won't bother trying if they feel that the fight is not winnable.

A good trick to spot them, think of the typical cocky wrestling villain, like HHH or Randy Orton, theatrical, coward, calculating, tyrannical... Also they bully A LOT.

The corporate world is filled with these and they are usually at managing positions.
