Are people aware that if you said Stockton>Ewing in the 80s/90s you might well have been left bleeding in the moonlight by even fans who hated the Knicks?

Certain people get a lot better in retrospect. Im just waiting to see someone start voting Reggie Miller over people the pacers would have traded him, Smits, and Mark Jackson for.

Really...thinking about it?

Would Ewing not likely be considered better than Stockton from like 1981 to 1999?

There are really people that isnt a factor to?

Anyway...off the top of my head these are the only MVPs left:

Cowens
Mcadoo
rose
nash
Iverson
Walton
Unseld

the only players who led title teams and arent picked yet....

Cowens
Whoever you credit for the 04 Pistons
Dennis Johnson/Gus Johnson
Unseld/Hayes
Schayes
Arizin
Bob Davies
Walton

Only players on both lists...

Unseld, Walton, and Cowens. And Cowens won 2 rings and played a full mostly healthy career.

Hes just that...other guy from the 70s.

Then again...Dolph was all NBA like 13 years in a row.

He and cowens did a lot more than I feel anyone cares about which isnt exactly...anyones fault. some guys just dont stand out for this reason or that one.

I just felt the need to write their names.

In the best season of Stocktons career...1990...straight prime Stockton...27 years old...55 win Jazz team. Ewing was still better. 28/12 or so all nba first team over Hakeem and Drob dropping 50/20 and 40/12 games back to back and putting up 32 and 12 for two months.

Patrick Ewing was considered better than stockton for literally 16 or so years in a row with the only possible exceptions being injured seasons.

But now hes behind John...because of....career totals?

I cant wait till 30 years from now to see the Bs rankings people do on this era that fly in the face of the opinions of the people watching now.

The only argument I can see for Stockton over Ewing is if we accept the notion that neither player is talented enough to win as a first option, and therefore we must look to assess their value as a second option.

I can entertain the idea that Stockton is a more valuable second option, but I won't accept the fact that Ewing doesn't cut it as a first option to begin with.

Saying that John Stockton was a better player than Patrick Ewing today is akin to saying that Tony Allen was a better player than Dwight Howard twenty years from now.

What version of Stockton was a better player than 10-11 Howard? What year exactly did John Stockton have a bigger impact than 10-11 Howard? I can name several years for Patrick Ewing in which he had a bigger impact than 10-11 Howard. Can the same be said for Stockton?

His defense is legendary, and he also averaged 28.5 points per game one season (21 ppg on 50% throughout his career) so clearly he had offense as well... on top of that, the team he led was one game saving block away (certainly one game away whatever your interpretation of the events) from a championship.

That said, I'm voting Cowens this time. 70s players don't get enough recognition.

Just for the hell of it...some quotes posted here a while back:

Ewing's play has been an even more important component of New York's success. "He might be the best in the game right now," Los Angeles's Mychal Thompson told the New York Daily News after Ewing scored 29 points in a 115-104 loss on Dec. 3. "He and Magic [Johnson] are shoulder to shoulder."

''If he doesn't win it, he'll be right there,'' said Magic Johnson, who has won the award twice. ''And if he continues putting up the numbers he's putting up, it's going to be hard for any of us to beat him out.

Quote:
Magic Johnson
''He has taken his game to another level,'' Johnson continued, ''a level I've never seen him play at before. He's dominating offensively and defensively, but he's also making the right plays at the right time. He's leading his team, as opposed to before, when it seemed he'd just as soon let somebody else lead. That's the real mark of an m.v.p.''

Quote:
Manute Bol
"I've never seen him do better," Bol said. Asked who is the league's best center , he replied: "I would say before Akeem but now Ewing, sure the way he played tonight. His game is different than years His game is different than years ago. He's shooting the outside jump shot and the jump hook."

Not the same tier in their day.....

That said....I cant vote for Ewing just so he wins when I dont think he belongs here. He should beat stockton. But that isnt the issue is it?

I hate that so many vote for the two guys closest when there are so many reasonable picks. It becomes ___ vs ___ and not...who they think it out and select. Which id rather not do.

If Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone and Jeff Hornacek were on the same team in the 90's, Jordan would not have all six rings.

Ewing is clearly better then Stockton.
But my vote is for Bill Walton.
