They always say that defense wins you championships. Which team would you say is the worst defensive team to ever go all the way and win a championship?

06 Heat and 01 Lakers in recent memory

How in the world are the 2006 Heat the worse defense when you have Shaq, and Alonzo Mourning as a backup for rim protection. :biggums:

The answer is the 2011 Mavericks. They shot the lights out, and zoned there way to the top.

The Heat had Jason Williams, Antoine Walker and Shaq in their starting lineup. The Mavs had JJ Barea and Dirk as their worst defenders

Mourning, Haslem, Posey vs. Tyson Chandler, Marion and Kidd

2009 Lakers should be the answer.
Or, 2001 Lakers, 2011 Mavericks, 2006 Heat, 2002 Lakers.

It's actually quite difficult, and fairly subjective.

:facepalm

Their defensive gameplan against the best player in the league was stuff of legend.

Or do people really still think Lebron's problem was all mental, he didn't just flip some imaginary switch 9 months later against the Thunder.

The mavs turned Lebron into a perimeter player, which is the ONLY way to beat Lebron.

Everyone should listen to Mark Cuban explain what they did. It would be easy to say the Mavs, but they had one of the most complex defensive schemes I've ever seen. It wasn't just a zone in the Finals.

2006 Heat. Besides the referees Avery lost that series. In the regular season they ran the Heat off the court twice, won by 30 something, because the Heat were old and slow. In the play-offs Avery suddenly decided to play isolation basketball against the Heat. The WC Finalist Suns must have been mad as hell watching that series, because they would have swept the Heat with their brand of basketball. After 10 minutes Shaq and Walker would have opened oxygen tents at midcourt.

I'm sure the Mavs defense deserves some credit, but I don't care what defensive scheme you throw out there, LeBron scoring 2 points or less in 4 consecutive 4th quarters should never happen, some of that falls on him

95 Houston? are you kidding me? Hakeem was one of the greatest defensive anchors of all tike

I say 12 Heat. Elite perimeter defense but they would have gotten exposed in the paint by many past championship teams

their defense was elite.
heat knew that prime kareem/hakeem/shaq/duncan weren't in the league. they would have been fine letting Pau score 25 a game against them because their perimeter defense was really elite till they got old and injured.
2012 heat were the best heat team in my opinion and only got pushed to 7 against celtics because bosh missed most of that series.

'88 Lakers were "only" ranked 9th defensively in the regular season and gave up 111.4 pts per 100 possessions in the playoffs. One of the least dominant playoff runs in NBA history.

For me, the biggest requirement for a championship team is having a top 10 defense. Doesn't matter how talented a team is or how good they are offensively if they can't get stops when they need them the most.

Whatever you do, PLEASE do not look up PPG stats. The important defensive stats are the points per possession info. And it is absolutely CRUCIAL to have a good defense if you want to win a title.

Here are the DRTGs of the NBA Champs since the defensive rule changes in 01-02 (from most recent to oldest):

What about offensive ratings? Something tells me elite, well balanced, teams win championships.

The '01 Lakers and '95 Rockets are the only championship teams in recent history that didn't have a top 10 defense. And that Lakers team pretty much did have a top 10 defense but they notoriously underachieved for most of their regular season. The '95 Rockets' were really the only team to do it, their run was just incredible.

Defense is what separates champions from the rest. The ability to get stops is the most important factor needed to win a title besides health. There have been amazing offenses over the years that couldn't get over the hump because they couldn't stop teams. The '05-'10 Suns are the perfect example.

This retard was hating on LeBron and the heat since he made an account in this forum. They did beat the Spurs in 2013 who were a very good defensive team.

exactly. thats also what cuban said. they had like 7 different strategies to stop lebron. they adjusted their strategy in the game to prevent lebron going in the zone. so he was basically reduced to a premiter player.focus was just on lebron.
yet wade homers say lebron choked and costed wade the fmpv. well, maybe, if dallas defense schemes were focusing wade instead of bron, wade would put up 16ppg and nobody would ever mention d-wayne even as a player playing in the 2011 finals.

@dirkdiggler homoking: Mavs defensive rating (points per 100 possessions) was 100.16 with Nowitzki on the floor, compared to 100.96 with Chandler on the floor.

 So the Dallas Defense was so good they held Lebron to 8 Points in a Finals Game? The Defense was so good they made Lebron unable to score in Isolations with 38 year old J-Kidd and 5'9 Barrea? The Defense was so good it made Bron stand in the corner and have no impact on the Games?
