I'd actually like to hear if there are any concrete non-weather-related reasons as to why people trash on the midwest so much.

NYC? Too dirty for me.

LA? You have to go to adjoining cities/suburbs to have some fun and since public transport sucks and traffic is horrible.... getting around is a nightmare.

I understand that one of the greatest cities in the world at one point(Detroit) has fallen on hard, hard times, but there are a lot of cool metropolitan areas in the Midwest.

I too would like to hear the reasoning behind their sentiments.

SF is more dynamic and eclectic than Chicago, even though its smaller.

The problem with midwestern cities is that the "energy" peters out fairly quickly once you leave the downtown core. Even a city as big as Chicago isn't ammune to this.

NYC, LA, Chicago all suck now. The generations that have built these cities, are now dead and gone, leaving lazy people in their place to bitch and moan about everything that their spoiled asses don't have. *ugh* and I LIVE IN Chicago.

Chicago is indeed bigger than the city of SF itself, but the SF bay area as a whole is around 10 million people i believe.

So you're basically saying that the cities in the midwest have less energetic sub- and exurban areas.... of which east- and west-coast cities are immune?

I live in Minneapolis, and I'd say that some of the most dynamic and entertaining areas of the metro area aren't directly downtown

I think you're looking at this from a tourist's point of view

You can't expect an entire city to be one big entertainment zone from border to border. Sure the concentration may be downtown, but there is no big dropoff outside of the area. Things are just a little more scattered out.

Northbound from downtown all the way to Hollywood Ave, there's all kinds of entertainment, nightlife, restaurants, etc. And that's about 8 miles of area in one direction alone.

chicagos downtown is pretty suck. Chicago is a great city, but probably not the best in the US. I honestly dont think there is such a thing. and, yes, the knocks on the midwest are really dumb and provincial. I will say that my least favorite major metro areas in the US (that I have been to) are LA, Dallas-FW, and Atlanta. My favorites are probably the Bay, SLC, Boston, NYC, Minneapolis.

Chicago..hahaha. You have teachers protesting when they already make more money than other teachers in the whole country practically. They make 70,000 and above. These people don't give a crap about education. You have the stupid mayor there crying and pleading for help with the rampant crime problem there. You also have the dumb mayor attacking a fast food place..:facepalm . Chicago must have fallen off big time.

Chicago is great. A lot of shitty areas, but that can be said of any city, even the biggest, most populated ones.

It isn't on NYC's level, (but no city really is) but it's a great city with a lot of fascinating culture, great food, noteworthy landmarks, etc.

But like other cities, you'll enjoy it a lot more the more money you have.

LA is a complete shithole. Boston is probably the best with SF and NYC behind it.

whats your criteria for determining what the best city is?

if you're into great food, amazing produce, diverse cultures, camping/hiking, clean living, moderate weather, low crime rates, and just a high quality of life the pacific northwest is where you want to be i.e. San Francisco/Portland/Seattle.

I am bias to San Francisco as to me it's by far the most European city in North America and can offer something for everyone. Anyone who thinks SF is gay and full of liberals clearly hasn't been here. Austin freaking Texas is more liberal then San Francisco.

I grew up on the East Coast and those cities are full of character and have a lot to offer in their own right but don't quite compare when you factor in the diversity both culturally and geographically along with just the overall quality of life.

I went to school at UCSD. While the student population is mostly academically driven (i.e. not much of a party school) there is still plenty to do and you won't have any trouble finding people to hang out with be it from UC or SD State.

I have a bunch of friends that go/went to SF State and they love it there as well. Really a win/win situation regardless where you go.

I don't get why somebody would say Chicago sucks because of the weather, but then give NYC a free weather pass.

Average Chicago low temperatures for January are about 9 degrees below NY's.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in New York City was -15F. Chicago had two separate days where the HIGH temperature for the day was -11F.

Since they started keeping temperature records in Central Park in 1872, here are the total days NYC has been below zero by month.

December - 15 days
January - 22 days
February - 21 days

That's a 140 years of records. Chicago would top that within 4 years.

So yeah, I think Winter in Chicago is worse than in NY. Makes me not trust you on the bad areas of Chicago.

Chicago even had the top ranked "most dangerous neighborhood" in the country.

It is West Lake Street.
