That's what the Imams and other religious/political/broadcast figures were telling people- that the dinky youtube video by some anonymous made up figure was a big budget Hollywood production and that Americans were flocking to theaters to watch it. Now what kind of impression would it create if people actually went out of their way to post more vids, cartoons, etc?

The problem is it isn't really 'economic aid' the US is buying influence and in a constant bidding war with China and Russia for this influence. If the US leaves the Chinese or Russians will swoop in and get a foothold in the region.

The US never had a lot of sway in the region until 1970 when Kissinger was able to sway Egypt out of Russian influence and in American influence. Since then the US has been the primary functionary in the region.

Giving up this influence will be a huge expense to the US both financially and geo-politically. It is a popular knee jerk reaction by people to say 'stop giving them money, f*ck them!' but the sad reality is that it isn't US altruism that leads to the donations (what US citizens like to think) but it is an insurance policy to protect US economic interests in the region.

Also I used to be like you, always defending muslims from racists, saying it was only a small group that does this and most muslims don't support this behavior, but recently my opinions have changed. In my opinion, yes it is only a small percentage of Arab Muslims participating in these acts of violence, however I do believe that is more than a small percentage that agrees with what these people are doing, perhaps a minority still, but I'd estimate aroung 40-45% of arab muslims in the middle east are supporting this kind of behavior.

I went to the London protests at the Egyptian embassy against mubarak and hundreds of people there started chanting "Kill Mubarak burn the jews. Burn them all free egypt" and "kill israel" at a protest THAT WAS AGAINST MUBARAK AND THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT. It is not just a tiny minority. It is a minority certainly that is so violent and hateful like this but it is not a tiny one.

In Algeria, Morocco, and Oman, these countries arabs and jews still get along pretty fine from what I know.

Also reading the Koran is not a waste of time considering it is the foundation that Middle Eastern moral values and politics are built off of, similar to how the bible is the foundation that western politics, literature and morals are built off of. Saying that the US constitution for example owes nothing to the old and new testament is pure ignorance. Most of the greatest novels written in English, from Moby Dick, to Great Expectations, to Ulysses, to Catch-22 are littered with biblical references and allegories.
