Just finished uploading a Mini mix of the original big man Mr. George Mikan.
6'10 245 ...In today's league he would be listed as either 6'11 or 7...Considering they give a lot of guys 2 inches...Or kevin love, 3...PLUS sinc ehe didn't lift weights to my knowledge, he'd probably weigh anywhere from 265-280

Greatest Laker ever...period.
Greatest meaning overall most respectable? Def could be argued. Plenty of rings and is a pioneer of the sport we all love today? hell yeah I respect this man
And with modern training, taught better shot selection I honestly do think he'd be one of the best centers in the league today. DAT HOOK

Nice to see Mikan getting some respect on the boards. I bought his autograph a few months ago. He's one of the true greats, an absolutely dominant force and big draw in his day.

Yeah I don't see ANYONE mention him really...it's a shame, after watching a good amount of college and pro games in the early 50s I have to admit I really like there style of ball...All that passing!! TEAM fundamental game.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did that set you back?
I'd love to start collecting stuff like that.
Mikan, Wilt, Russell(Idt he ever signed lol), Kareem, Walton, Dream, Ewing, Robertson, Shaq, Mutumbo ETC

I paid close to $200 for it.
Here's my collection (featuring Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Pete Maravich, Oscar Robertson, etc): http://s1132.photobucket.com/albums/m561/Will23C1982/?start=all
I got this one last week, which has become one of my instant favourites:

That Russell autograph must have been extremely difficult to come by. He stopped signing autographs as a player after 1964 (I may be a little off with the exact year.) and was heavily criticized for that. He said that autographs basically turned him into a commodity. He wanted to be respected as a man not just as some entertaining athlete. I'm certain that in his later years he softened his approach to signing autographs.

Nah you didn't really say trash; I was trolling... maybe it was someone else, but yeah you said "He is the one legendary player that couldn't play in the NBA."
I'm just remembering when we talked about Jerry West and Mikan.

From the video it seems that Mikan was a modern big man. He could pass, dribble, and had nice touch around the rim. He can finish with either hand, and had no problem dealing with contact.

Great Thread J,
Mikan was very fluid with his left hand which is something you wouldn't expect - being that I am not so ready to say that about any true center today. He was bit a head of his time. And might be the first to get the Post moves down to a true science of manipulation. I have an honorary spot in my top ten for him (he makes it a top twelve - one big man and one little man spot for tremendous contribution to future players and the sport).
How about the Globetrotter articles. Proof of how far being skilled can go (ok athletic, too). These guys rarely played real competitive ball but were fully capable of competing in a big way.

I remember that actually, having watched more footage of him and looking at it putting more things into perspective...with some adjustments I deff think he could play today. Just how good, I really have no clue...But people aren't robots they can adjust

I'll go on a hunt and see what I can dig up. I'm doing a highlight of 50s ball so hopefully I come across some
clyde lovellette who was on that team with Mikan, was a brute in his own right and is a lot better than his pictures would give off. (He's the guy that caused wilt to have to wear that mask)
If all goes to plan, the highlight will be up later today or tmw

These 50s guys do need more exposure. Its not fair that we only talk about the 60s when there was a whole other decade before them.

I wonder how Bob Kurland would have done in the NBA, he was Mikans rival in college and some considered him better.
eliteballer
09-30-2012, 11:02 PM
Six decades later, Kurland said he doesn't regret the choice. He insists he could have competed against Mikan, Clyde Lovellette and the generation's best big men. He doubted, though, that he'd have adequate help.
"I was a good player, but I didn't have the abilities to get into an offense without a regimented style of play,'' he said. "Somebody had to throw me the ball. In the pro game, to gain notoriety, you don't throw other people the ball."
He lists guards as his all-time favorite players, from Bob Cousy of the dynasty Celtics to Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili of the near-dynasty Spurs. The most impressive player he ever has seen is Wilt Chamberlain, whom he first met in a hotel elevator and later called a great friend.
"I look down and there's the man's feet, and I look up and up and up," Kurland said. "It's the only time I've ever looked into a man's eyes, and it scared the [heck] out of me."
Chamberlain could score and rebound a little, too, but his embracing his role as a celebrity especially endeared him to Kurland. Unlike the stereotype of former players, Kurland said he loves the showmanship that accompanies today's game.

I'd say he's second GOAT Laker after Kareem.
The Mikan drill is still taught to many young players who are starting out basketball.
