View Full Version : Brandon Roy is back, and decent so far

5-9 from the field with 13pts, 4reb. It is preseason, and he apparently aint the same Roy he used to be, but at least it seems to me that he can still play in the league. Good pick by the T-wolves.
oh the horror

So far, so good. We'll see as the season progresses. If he can at least be productive then thats a plus.

Roy has looked pretty good. Just saw him blow past his defender and hit a nice looking pull up.

I hope dude can average at least 10-15ppg, his career has been so miserable thus far. For someone with his talent and working ethics, he deserves more than what he's got.

It's never going to be about talent with Roy. He's unlike a lot of other stars who have lost athleticism in that he didn't depend entirely on it. He's so highly skilled that he could play at 40 if his knees held up. The problem is durability. He is going to wear down.
I hope to catch every Wolves game I can. I really hope the best for Roy. I hope the Wolves make the playoffs.

I can see Roy being the glue guy. Skilled and talented, won't ever be THE Man but he'll be that valuable 3rd or 4th option, especially in the 4th quarter. I hope he exceeds my expectations as he's one of the more respectable guys in the league.

What was the specific reason about his knees on why he was retiring? Is it bone-on-bone or something?

I don't want to get too excited because I'm not confident his knee's will hold up all season, but he looked very good tonight. He also played off ball nearly the entire game and looked very good. Playing with Rubio shouldn't be a problem.
Off topic, but damn Alexey Shved can pass the ball.:wtf:

This. As painful as it would be to watch Roy and the Wolves succeed, there are just too many players I enjoy watching on that team to root against them.

It would be a very bittersweet thing I imagine for Blazers if Roy had a good season. I've always liked dude as a player and I love the Wolves with Rubio there, so hopefully he can get his shit together.
Oden coming back successfully with Miami would be a much harder pill to swallow I'd guess.

Hold on a second, did Oden sign with Miami? I thought he was taking the year off.:confusedshrug:

I'll wait one month in before I evaluate Roy. He had some pretty good games in 2011 too. And he had many more awful ones.
Seriously want him to stay healthy though. Wolves will be looking at 2nd round, potentially WCF if he does.

To add on to what RoseCity said, it's not about talent with him. We know what he can produce when he's out there. It's actually a matter of his pain tolerance and how his body holds up. He had no cartilage in his knees and did the ever so famous Germany trip to get that plasma procedure. I'm not sure what exactly that procedure entails but Kobe, T-mac, and a bunch of pro athletes have done it and it seems to have worked for them so maybe he will be better if he takes it a little easy?

And, he said, his knees felt fine.

I like B Roy. But don't get your hopes up.
Injured players making a come back (Penny, T-mac, Grant Hill) can often put up some big numbers from time to time and make you have flash backs of their prime injury free days .The opposing teams can sometimes forget about them a little. And they still have their skills and smarts. So if they see a good matchup they'll exploit it.
But it usually doesn't last...in the next game, the defense ups the intensity level up on them and then they disappear back to irrelevance as they have no athleticism left to handle the intensity.

I know that, but even if Roy can come back at a Grant Hill level that would be an immense upgrade from Wesley Johnson playing the 2 guard.

I'm surprised Roy didn't go to Phoenix. I'm surprised Phoenix didn't pursue him (or did they?).

Honestly, I don't think Roy was realistically even going to entertain another team once the Wolves got involved. Roy is really tight with Bill Bayno and Will Conroy (who both recruited the Wolves to get Roy and Roy to the Wolves). Because of what Conroy did he got a contract with 100k guaranteed.
On a loosely connected point of players choosing teams, Andrei Kirilenko revealed that he got an even bigger offer than what the Wolves gave him. He never said who, nor what other teams pursued him, but he flat out said during training camp that we were not the biggest offer.
hope he can make it all the way back. bar none one of my favorite players ever. just has the total package. was on pace to be the best SG in the league.

With that being the case, I hope this is well thought out move and here's to hoping it works.
I thought that amnestied players, who weren't picked up, could only sign for the minimum.

man, that's gotta hurt. he's obviously playing through the pain, unless there's a new procedure that miraculously cures bone to bone cartilage loss. does he really need the money that much? because if no, he can just forgo all this pain and find some other job basketball related. be an analyst, asst, coach, scout, or something.

To my knowledge, they never went after him. They were pretty hung up on Eric Gordon until NO matched. By then I think Roy had signed.
I hope he can carve out a good career from here until his knees completely give out. He was one of my favorite players to watch. I loved his game, so I'm happy to see him back, and I think he'll be a great leader on this Wolves team, and he gives them a guy they can go to in the 4th quarter. They should be exciting to watch, and I'm pulling for them to be in the playoffs this year.

He came back for basketball reason. He still is getting 100% of the deal he signed with Portland.

I wonder if that other team would give him the same playing time. How much is he getting paid? That could be a factor in his decision. This could be a case of taking a little less for more playing time.

Roy could be for the Wolves what Sam Cassell was before KG left. A true team captain that keep the team together but too injured to do anything more.

i hope broy will be at least half of what he was before... if better then its better for the league because after kobe / wade / manu .. the Sg spart is quite full of quality players but not superstars like pg's and pf's today.... oh SF's too :)

I'm pretty sure once Minnesota took him, they also took the contract obligations.

Wrong. That only happens if a team makes a bid for an amnestied player. The team that makes the bid only has to pay that amount and the team who amnestied that player has to pay the total contract - the bid. Nobody ever put a claim on Roy when he was amnestied and then retired. Because of that he was able to be a free agent and choose his own team. Portland is paying 100% of the contract they signed Roy to and Roy is going to make 5 million a year for this year and next (second year is unguaranteed).

As a guy who lived in Seattle for too long, Brandon Roy is one of the brightest basketball stars from there. I hope the best for him.

As a Supersonic fan, were the Blazers your rival? Do you now root for them? Is there a de facto team to follow now in Seattle?

+1. I don't care if he's ever an all-star again. I really don't. It never was about the 20-25ppg he would score. I just want to see him on the floor bringing something good to a team for a long time.
I'm seriously buying league pass mainly to catch Twolves games.

I didn't know there were so many Wolves fans. I remember about 4 of us last year.
I can't wait for the season to start, even though Rubio's still a couple months away. Can't wait to see what Shved and Kirilenko bring to the team, along with Roy. I absolutely LOVE all of the Wolves' moves from the offseason. What they ended up doing was a lot better than overpaying for Batum.

I never really had a rivalry or grudge against the Blazers. In fact during the 92 finals, I cheered for them to beat the Bulls. Clyde Drexler always seemed like a nice guy and I wanted him to do well.
I am pretty much neutral. I don't cheer for any team at all.

THanks bro.
But it won't be the same. They should've never left in the first place. If the Hornets were sold to the OKC ownership group then they wouldn't have that incentive of coming up to Seattle to buy the Sonics and bring them down there.
