View Full Version : I do NOT want a Lakers/Heat final

HOLD ON, don't dismiss this as a "haters gonna hate" blog entry because it's not!

I have been known to dabble in a lottery called Sports Select. On any given game night, if my $2 says I need the Heat or the Lakers to win, then for those nights I am huge fan of the teams. Even in the world of fantasy sports I consider LeBron the 1st pick overall over Durant. I also figure Kobe being drafted no later than 1st pick of the 2nd round ahead of Nowitzki, Irving & Cousins.

The NBA is a league that stills lives in the shadows of the scandolous actions of a past referee's. Don't believe me, try having a discussion about last year's playoffs that does not include chatter about the reffing.

Mix in a NBA President that vetoed a trade to a team he was technically running himself and the emerging trend of "super-friend" teams and you have the basis for my belief that a Lakers/Heat final would be the worst thing that could happen to a league that is fighting for credibility.

I am not asking for a NFL situation where a wildcard team wins the Superbowl or a NHL situation where an 8th seed wins the Cup, I am simply asking to see two teams in the Finals that are not the Lakers and Heat. It would be the first time since the 2007 finals, which featured LeBron's Cavs facing the Spurs, that neither LA or Miami was in the finals.

A senior citizen version of the Finals featuring the Celtics and Spurs would appease me fine. The OKC Thunder getting another shot at the title would not be de-valued if that shot came against Indiana or Philadelphia instead of Miami.

For as much talent the Heat have, their style of play is actually quite boring tbh. Their boring (yet quite effective in this era) of three-point chucking, flopping and free-throw feasting just doesn't appeal to me.

The Knicks, despite also shooting a lot of threes, are at least free-flowing and don't bog down the flow of the game with free-throw seeking and flopping players.. the less ref involvement the better.

Lakers/Boston is a totally different animal.. it's tradition.

We need a Lakers/Miami finals... we went without a Bulls/Rockets(Olajuwon vs Jordan) finals... that crime cannot be repeated... the world has been waiting for this clash since Shaq left LA...

This is the perfect time... Shaq will be there rooting against the two persons he hates the most, Kobe and Howard... LA fans will be there rooting against the two players they hate the most Bron and Wade... Also Shaq dislikes Nash.

so technically it will be Shaq(as a commentator), Wade and Bron vs Kobe, Howard, Nash,MWP, Gasol and the rest of LA... it was the finals that was supposed to happen but didn't happen 6 - 8 years ago...

This needs to/must happen...

The Heat have always been a solid franchise that made the playoffs consistently, but this is the first time they've had a consistent elite team that can make the Finals every year.

It would be exciting to play LA. Both franchises have never played each other in the Finals and it would bring a new experience.

The Heat have played Dallas and OKC the last 2 years in the Finals. Those series aren't seen often, and create new rivalries. We've seen Boston and LA a million times.

Once Miami fades away for a while (if they do), OKC should be on top and they should create a rivalry with other young teams on the rise. At least I hope so.

I actually have been fairly open about it.. still doesn't mean that you're not a LeBron dicksucker by bringing that out of nowhere. Stan logic: If you don't LOVE the Heat style of play and don't prefer them over any team in the east = Fear them. :facepalm

Anyway, it's just an observation. I've noticed most Kobe fans don't wanna see Lebron in the finals. Why? They're scared for their boy. They know fully well Lebron outplays him in their H2H's. Doesn't take a "Lebron dicksucker" to know that.

Really.. go on..

Personally, I didn't want a Lakers/ Cavs finals because of the historic level of preferential treatment the Cavs got - even moreso than the heat, but people didn't pay much to it since it's a small market team and LeBron was "likable" to the masses.

You don't get just 2 games away from the best home record in NBA history without a lot of home cooking. This current Heat team with LeBron Cavaliers preferential treatment wouldn't lose a game.

It was actually quite miraculous how the Magic overcame all the anti-pref they received. Had it not been for some timely shots and heoric play by Rashard Lewis and Hedo, this farce of a team (Cavs) would've made the 06 charade look like a picnic. As a basketball purist, I'm grateful for that.

How the Fk would any title be devalued??? If OKC or anyone wins it's legit unless Stern voids a trade....lol.

Then of all the idiotic things....you say Celtics???? The Celtics who have won the most NBA titles???? That nullifies your entire point :banghead:
Then you add in the Spurs who have....other than the Lakers, won the most titles since MJ retired :facepalm :banghead:

Not even close. The Magic won due to matchup problems, and Mo Williams being non existent as second option to Bron. Had virtually NOTHING to do with ref micromanaged games.

Refs don't win or lose games. That is usually a pathetic, weak minded excuse for fans. They can heavily influence them with awkward officiating. See Heat 2006, Lakers 2002, etc.

But the Cavs were a great regular season team because they played great team defense, had fun on the court, and were led by an all time great talent ... who quite simply makes the players around him better.

That's what Laker / Kobe fans know deep down in their hearts, and it's also why they project onto him. Why? Because they fear him.

It didn't work for the Cavs in the playoffs, much the way this same style didn't work for the 2011 Bulls because in the playoffs, you need legit scoring / playmaking options beyond your superstar player to be a true championship caliber team.

Why are you talking to me about this kiddo? I'm not a Laker, Cavs, or Heat fan ... so why are you lecturing?

We do apply this same logic to Lakers / Heat / Cavs fans. Although on the other hand I think it's more difficult to root for an individual player, through hard times and good ... than it is to claim to be a fan of a FRANCHISE that due to location, deep pockets, etc. virtually will always remain relevant (apart from the 90s) because much like the Yankees in baseball procure talents developed elsewhere with their pockets.

It's easy to be a fan of the purple and gold. They're spoiled with greatness. Usually acquired greatness, and not developed. It takes the fun away from seeing the struggle to get to the top. It's the easiest thing in the world to throw on a Laker gear and claim to be a fan from the start.

He has a point, though. They have a sick transition game thats fun, but that evaporates in the playoffs.

Their two star players, very much do play for foul calls ... instead of going out and just trying to beast mode and get baskets the way they're both capable.

Wade did it in game 6 v.s. Indiana. And LeBron did it in game 6 v.s. Boston.

Those were the two most exciting games Miami played, in terms of skill and performance.

Last year was the first time since I started watching the Lakers in 1991 that I fell asleep during games. The offense was terrible. It was probably a combination of Kobe-ball, horrible spacing, iso offense, and dumbass Mike Brown.

Horrendously boring.

I think the most exciting team to watch is OKC.

You've got Westrbook, who like young Wade, goes balls to the wall athleticism attacking the basket.

You've got Sefalosha playing lock down fundamental man defense on the perimeter. Ibaka blocking shots, Perkins scowl. You've got Kevin Durant having fun, and stroking the long ball from deep, and James Harden coming in and doing his THANG off the dribble.

Beyond the occasional flops from Harden, they play for the BASKET ... they can run, jump, play defense but also play entertaining in the half court.

Westbrook and Durant are better half court ball players offensively than Wade and LeBron at this point. Wade can play like Westbrook when he isn't trying to egg on refs by getting foul calls.

It was probably a combination of Kobe-ball, horrible spacing, iso offense, and dumbass Mike Brown.
Correction. OLD less capable Kobe-ball.

That style of play was super fun in 2006 and 2007 when he was 28 - 30 and could actually do stuff.

you really think people want to a Spurs vs Celtics finals?

So 2 teams that, even after their star players decline, will still have a bright future in the years to come ?

Even if I wanted to look at this in a star matchup and media angle, you got:

Tim Duncan vs Kevin Garnett (battle of 2 GOAT PF's)

Tony Parker vs Rajon Rondo (battle of 2 exciting PG's)

Manu Ginobilli vs Jason Terry (battle of the 6th men)

There's plenty of names there and style match ups to keep people interested. You can go with the sub-plot angle of Duncan having animosity against Garnett for the longest time.

Both teams also establish a team-first mentality to the game. There's nothing "people" should roll their eyes over in a potential match up like that.

Lebron dick riders need to relax about Laker fans being scared of the Heat :oldlol: you win one championship and you guys act like you're unbeatable. Besides what does it exactly prove if the Heat beat an out of his prime Kobe :confusedshrug: On the flip side if the Heat lose we'll just hear the same tired excuses that Lebron plays with the worst case in NBA history and that the only reason Kobe won was because he has the most stacked roster blah blah blah. Both these teams are so stacked that this is really the only match up that makes sense, although the Heat are boring to watch. Only 2 teams that can challenge each other which pisses me off even more about this whole super team garbage that the big 3 in Miami started. If pretty much takes the competition out of the NBA.

It doesn't really make sense to me either but I assume that there's a lot of people out there that just want the underdog to be in it.. a role that the Lakers nor the Heat fit into.

To me saying that you don't want a heat/lakers final is almost like saying you don't want to see a pacquiao/mayweather fight.. why not see the best two (potentially) teams in the league duke it out?

Or it doesn't matter if the Heat/Lakers finals happen because they are other potential match ups ?

Media could sell any match ups and story lines even if it's 2 teams that don't get a lot of media coverage. I'll watch any match up that happens in the NBA Finals.

For the popularity of the stars behind a Heat/Lakers match up, hey, let's hope it can happen... but it wouldn't be the only thing I sit down for.
