That's why I get annoyed whenever anyone in the NBA is called "garbage". No one in the league is garbage.

From a relative standpoint when being compared to the rest of the NBA's talent pool, some can be called "garbage".

But, I've never seen a Summer League played in the official arena. Was that something special they were doing since LeBron was such a huge box office draw?

Elitebonehead, here he thought it was easy to make it in the NBA.

And to the poster who gets annoyed with people being called garbage, scrubs? You're not too bright. There are garbage players in the NBA. Sorry you can't understand that it's in relation to the rest of the league genius.

Relatively they could be to other NBA players, but I agree with you.

Even the worst players in the league would destroy anybody's YMCA team that posted here lol

"Bogans.. gonna be the real deal this year"

Just goes to show how worthless Summer League performance can be.

Nothing about those Reece Gaines moves was so special that it's unfathomable that he would fall out of he league.

Dwyane Wade has high praise about Gaines, during their college days:

Dwyane Wade called Reece Gaines the best college basketball player he ever faced.

Other than the very top guys in the NBA who are just incredible most of the guys in the NBA are there for a reason. Some of these reasons include
-Great three point shooter
-7 footer
-Elite athleticism

There are guys not in the league who would "look better" than some of these guys, but with guys like LeBron who are just infinity times better at what they do their talent is not needed and complimentary players make it instead.

Agree with what? Calling Royal Ivey garbage doesnt mean I think I'm better than him, as good as him. Its relative to the other players in the NBA. So I dont get why you and the other guy cant comprehend that. Its hilarious to me. Even more funnier that the first line in your post explains why the terms garbage, scrub, bums are even used. Jesus Christ you kids overthink things to sound smart and end up looking dumb. Oh wait you're gonna tell me your educational success so you cant possibly be dumb.

Speaking of how we all suck in comparison to even the weakest NBA rejects, have any you guys ever tried to re-create a true-to-life version of yourself in NBA 2K? If so, what was your overall? Most folks seem to assume we'd all be 25 overalls (the minimum allotted rating) but some attributes would actually translate to the NBA and contribute to a slight ratings boost (free throws, dunking, speed, to name a few). I'm not sure I'd expect anyone to break the 40 overall mark, but any 30's? 32's?

On the flip side, what ratings do you guys think would absolutely not translate to the NBA, even if you feel you're pretty solid at something on the playground or in high school or college? I am of the opinion that, amongst many other traits, stamina and rebounding would be two things we might be able to get by with on our own levels but would never translate to the NBA.

The requirement is only insane if you are under 6'8. If you are 6'9 and over, chances are you could be in the league just on size alone.

This. Imagine the competition of people you are going against under 6'8. Thousands across the country or even more. Over 6'9... as long as you're athletic.. you've got a chance.

You can't teach height.

IGotACoolStory
10-20-2012, 03:24 PM
No. If you are 6-8+ with a little skill, chances are you will be playing in college.

There are a lot of solid players who never made it to the NBA at that height.

7-0+... Well then maybe I agree. Assuming you aren't a sloth, actually care about basketball to some extent, and don't have the smallest hands/wingspan in the world.

I'll have to go look for the stat.

Hundreds of millions of people have picked up a basketball before and tried to play. 300 people are in the NBA.

So yeah, it is no surprise that even the worst out of that 300 is going to be amazing.

300 out of 200 million is .00015 percent. So, if you are in the NBA you are in the top .00015 percent.

Rake2204
10-20-2012, 03:30 PM
Well, here's food for thought:

An actual accounting of 7-footers, domestic or global, does not exist in any reliable form. National surveys by the Center for Disease Control list no head count or percentile at that height. (Only 5% of adult American males are 6'3" or taller.) "In terms of the growth spectrum, 7 feet is simply extreme," explains endocrinologist Shlomo Melmed, dean of the medical faculty at L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The term 7-footer is itself a kind of outer limit, a far-off threshold beyond which precise measurement seems superfluous. A 6'4" guard isn't a 6-footer, after all. The curve shaped by the CDC's available statistics, however, does allow one to estimate the number of American men between the ages of 20 and 40 who are 7 feet or taller: fewer than 70 in all. Which indicates, by further extrapolation, that while the probability of, say, an American between 6'6" and 6'8" being an NBA player today stands at a mere 0.07%, it's a staggering 17% for someone 7 feet or taller.

The percentage is still terribly small, but not .00015 small.

15*30 = 450. Thats how many roster spots are available in the NBA. It's by far the smallest, with the NFL having 1696 roster spots (not counting practice squads) and the MLB having 750 (not counting the minor league affiliates which would push that number to well over 1000). You truly have to be elite at what you do in basketball and stay relatively healthy to be able to make it into the league.
