When do you consider it acceptable?
A high school team you are currently playing for?
A high school/local team you once played for?
A college team of a school you are attending/attended?
A Pro team from your home state?
A team you just like a player from?
A team you just like the color scheme of?

OK:
A high school team you are currently playing for?
A high school/local team you once played for?
A college team of a school you are attending/attended?
Not OK:
A Pro team from your home state?
A team you just like a player from?
A team you just like the color scheme of?
Imagine someone saying "We (the Heat) will go after Player A next year." Then I think.. oh really? you have some say in it? :confusedshrug:

I never do this unless I'm actually on the team.

As long as you are a legit fan I don't have a problem with people saying "we".
Its bandwagoners/frontrunners who sound ridiculous saying "we".

The only time I get on a fan saying we is to be a d!ck. Pretty much sums up this thread and people who get on folks for using we.

Actgually yes they do. Imagine if "we" the casual fan didn't go to any of their games to pay for them. In the end, all of us has a say on it...together.
End the end, I don't give a f*ck to be honest. I have better things to worry about then something so petty. as this shit.

i rarely say "we," but who cares if people say we or not. they're not actually saying they're a part of the organizationI am the same way, and I agree. I have a friend whose pet peeve is folks who say "we" when referring to a team they follow. I suppose I understand his issue from a technical standpoint, but I just differ in terms of allowing it to bother me. When people say "we", I get the point, and I think that's what counts.
I don't think I've ever known someone who said "we" in lieu of "the team for which I am a fan" because he actually thought he was somehow an active member of their organization. I've just taken it as a shorter, easier way of referring to the team at hand, even slightly simpler than saying "they're", and perhaps leaving less room for confusion. If a person is a Raptors fan and during a game they say, "Man, they're going to have to start turning up the defensive intensity", there's potential to wonder, "Who needs to turn up the defensive intensity?" Sure, he could say, "The Raptors need to turn up the intensity" and that'd work, but it's also clear who he's talking about (and most concise) when he says "we".
All that said, I understand there's douchey fans that exist out there where a lot of things I'd allow from other people, would suddenly sound objectionable from the douche guys. "We" has the potential to sound ridiculous depending on how certain folks say it, but I have a high tolerance, so I don't object very often.

Never understood why people got so **** about this. Yeah if you're some bandwagon fan that switches every few years saying "we" might be a bit much. But if you're a lifelong fan of a team and you support them then why can't you say we? Considering you might be rooting for the team longer than many of the actual players, why can't you say we?

I think if you're a season ticket holder or regularly go to games to support your team, then it's perfectly acceptable. Without the fans, there is no team.

Who cares? I say we when talking about teams I support.
For example, if I'm watching football I think it sounds better to say
"We need to run the ball more"
rather than saying
"The bears need to run the ball more"
I just think it sounds unnatural to have to say "the Bears" before I say anything about them

I can't stand when people say "we" like they are on the team. I'll always get a lame response back saying fans are part of the team and they pay money to support them so they are allowed to say "we".
I always refer to my team as the team name. Just my opinion.

Chicago Bulls. plays for Chicago, represents Chicago and the people of Chicago. WE is a correct term to use if you are referring to your towns team. it would be unacceptable if a team wasnt assigned to a group of people or a town. But too bad, teams are so using "we" is acceptable.

The interesting thing to me is that it's okay to say "we" when talking about your college team but not for the city you're attending.
Penn State Football represents Penn State. So a Penn Stater can go ahead and say "yeah we totally destroyed Georgia Tech today!" and nobody would bat an eye.
But don't the Thunder represent OKC? If you are a resident of OKC, can you not say "We destroyed Miami today!"???
I think maybe there's some subtle subconscious feeling of how well you can relate to the members on team? Students attending school together are a lot more closely related than two people of very different socio-economic classes living different lives in a large city? Just a thought.

Teams and players both say things all the time to make fans feel as part of the team...
"this chanpionship is for you the fans"
"we couldn't have done it without you the fans"
Time and time again through all sports we see this because without the fans there is no sport
Teams spend a lot of effort advertising or promoting themselves to draw fans into feeling thye are part of something bigger
Raiders nation, Clippers nation or The (insert your favorite team) faithful
and many other variations on the theme
No problem with saying "we" only problem I see is people actually getting upset about those that do

Pretty much this, depends on how emotional/passionate you get over your team. I really don't have a problem with it.. that's the entire concept of being on a team anyways.. you lose together you win together.

I think the fanbase could be considering a part of them team. I don't mind when loyal fans use it, because they have been with the team so long that they feel like they are a part of the team, even though they aren't. But you can't just say it when you're team is doing good, you have to say it when they are doing bad as well.

If you're a fan then you are part of the team. As fans we pay their salaries by attending games, watching on tv, paying for league pass, buying merchandise and jerseys. We make them popular. So if you have anything directly connected to a team as far as helping them grow. Then you feel a part of them. And as a part of something you refer to them as "we"
If the lakers are my team. And they sign a great player. Then "we " signed a great player

Obviously, the latter 2 are just their for a singular player and on the bandwagon of another team because they are in the spotlight a lot now.
I usually just type "we" because it's faster than typing the team name over and over again.

what if when people start using "we" to account for their favorite player only?
e.g. Pauk:
"We(Lebron) will win the FMVP this year"
"We(Lebron) didn't choke in 2011, it was Wade's fault he made us suck"

teams do a ton of things to get the fans involved and invested in the teams success. When you say "We" it just means you are invested in your team.

I've put up with some shitty Knicks teams over the years and my support has never wavered, I think I've earned the right to consider myself part of that fan base and say 'we'. I say it for my AFL team I support too. If my team is playing, it is my team, vs. other people's team, us vs. them. I see no problem with people saying 'we' at all.
If people start saying it for more than one team in any given league, then I've got an issue with it.

This actually makes sense. I live in Illinois, so I'm used to hearing people say "think we're gonna take it this year?" or something along those lines, when talking about our sports teams. And these are older fans saying it too, male or female. It's just an expression that people here at ISH sometimes read too much into.

nothing wrong at all with a fan feeling invested in their team.
I feel the same way. A lot of times, we fans give more money, time, emotion and energy to our teams than some of the players who are being paid by the team.
In my life, I have watched about... 1500 or so Lakers games, at 2 hours 30 minutes per game on average, that's approximately 3,750 hours of cheering, stressing, yelling, cussing, etc... not even counting the hours spent talking, discussing, reliving those hours... What to speak of the money I've directly contributed to the team through ticket purchases, merchandise purchases... I would say that I've earned the right to say we, when referring to my hometown and lifelong team.
When I talk about the Lakers I say we. Nothing wrong with it at all. I hear the term used in that context all the time and have never thought it strange. I'm passionate about my team, my fandom.

When do you consider it acceptable?
A Pro team from your home state?
For those who have a problem with this, why?
If you are a working citizen of your state and is paying taxes, which often times is used to build sport arenas and stadiums then I don't see an issue with it.
Hell, if you're a paying customer of your favorite regardless of where your from, I say it's OK too since you're helping selling "your team's" name and brand.
Without fans there would be no NBA. :pimp:

In my opinion the fans of a team are just as important to the organization as the players or the front office. Without fans paying to watch the team, cheering during the games and representing their brand, the organization could not continue to exist. I'm a lifelong Laker fan. It's not they, it's we.
