28 and i have about $15,000 to my name. about $5,000 in a savings account and $10,000 in an IG markets account. i am still a student so hopefully next year when i start working i can save more. right now i can only save about $100-150 a week.

i've found the best way to save is to aim for a number - say $1000 - and once you reach it never go under it. act as if you have $0 in your account. and rinse and repeat - go for $2000, then 3 then 4 and so on and so forth.

The "dumb****" line came from years of dealing with people that didn't know there were other things you could do with money besides sticking it in a savings account, didn't mean to offend.

You saying you spent 200k+ since you became a teenager?

Got a little cash in the bank but owe 40k in student loans. My goal is to have the loans paid off and have 100k saved by the age of 35 - that would be 12 years from now.

Wrong. FDIC insures up to $250k. And actually, it can go beyond that in some cases with the 343 section of the new Dodd-Frank reforms.

Age: Turned 27 a few days ago...wow

Assets:
$2080 in checking
$2000 in Ameritrade
$6500 pension (I work in a foreign country and get to take this with me in 5 months when I stop my job)
Total = $10,580

Liabilities:
$125 credit card debt
$20,000 graduate student loans
Total = $20,125

Things are low at the moment because I just finally finished paying ALL of my undergrad credit card, loan etc debt off. There is about 10k still left to be paid but thankfully my pops is covering that and making the $150 a month payment on that.

Working full-time + going to grad MACC school full-time at the moment. Saving about $1000 a month. In March when I stop working my assets will be ~17,000 and debt staying the same at 20k

Believe it or not, but I think I am the poorest among all of my siblings, and I have 1 that is younger than me.

A lot of the expenses people have like student loans, stuff like that I avoided simply because my parents paid for my university tuition in full and gave me money while I was attending classes so that I could focus on my studies. I found my accounting courses challenging even though I could put 100% of my effort towards them and I knew once I was done finding a job would be easy for me (nepotism).

A lot of people I went to school with I really respected because they handled the same coursework as me but also worked as well, and there was uncertainty about what they would do after they got their degree and CPA designation.

People like to think that America is an extremely socially mobile country, but we aren't. Maybe relative to other countries we still are, but IMO if your parents were rich and worked in business, you probably will be rich and well connected in that industry. Most job openings are never even listed publically, they are filled via recommendations. The hardest part is getting into the company at a position where you can demonstrate you have value to the organization. Once you do so and you have an impressive resume life gets a lot easier, and your bosses get a lot nicer.

To those who took out loans for college...how manageable was it to repay them? Looking at around ~35k in debt when I'm done with my Masters. Looking to work as an intelligence analyst in the State Dept. or CIA.

That'd be nice! ;) Btw, we should go to Houston for the dunk contest and 3 pt shootout night this season.

And, don't have to worry about those student loans until after graduation anyway. Most of them I'm just taking out and keeping in my school account in case my mother cuts me off again and I have to pay for school myself. As for grad school, she won't be thrilled about what I'm studying...so therefore I'd be eligible under FAFSA to get aid myself, hence the bulk of that debt.

If I post my bank account balance and age I guarantee you that ISH will be after me.:lol

So I'll refrain from doing so. However, pretty cool thread. Shoutout to the people brave enough to post a pic.

US Banks only insure up to $100k, if you have more than that in a bank account it needs to be moved to an actual investment of some sort (what most people do with lots of cash) or a Swiss bank...

I know the pics are fake, just sayin...

FDIC insurance is $250k.

That's common knowledge but I also work for a bank so it's planted in my head.

age:21

checkings: 1,300
savings: $7,300

started putting money in my savings account a year ago but because a lot of unexpected expenses i had to use some of it.

havent touched the savings account last six months and we put in everything that is left at the end of the month in the savings.

me and my gf are aiming for at least putting $1,000 month now without having to be too frugal. sometimes we succeed and when we dont we cut spending month after to make up the differences.

tho the bitch barley even works.
