Any evidence you have that suggests a player is probably a scumbag...id enjoy reading about it. Great players....scrubs. Whatever. Lets hear some stories/see some quotes. ISH often surprises me with something I didnt know. Lets see how it goes......

First entry...someone im sure would come up quickly if you asked anyone who played in the 70s:

When Abe Pollin led the NBA’s first venture into China in the summer of 1979, not every member of the Washington Bullets shared the team owner’s enthusiasm. As players and their wives poured off a bus to take in the splendor of the Great Wall, Elvin Hayes and Dave Corzine refused to budge.
Pollin peered back and asked Hayes if he was coming. “I’ve seen a big wall before, Mr. Pollin,” Hayes told him. Wes Unseld tried to persuade Hayes by telling him the wall was the only man-made structure that can be seen from outer space. To which Hayes responded, “I’m never going into outer space.”
Pollin was so infuriated afterward he swore that he’d never take his team on another trip. “One of the wonders of the world,” Pollin said recently in a telephone interview, “and they didn’t get out of the bus.”

Hayes once told (http://www.brokencowboy.com/2005/06/an_interview_wi.html) Tex Winter, “I’m an all-star. Don’t expect me to pass. It’s like asking Babe Ruth to bunt.”

Hayes, who reinforced his reputation as basketball’s quintessential choker in Game 1 by hiding in the fourth quarter while being terrorized by Silas, accepted media criticism with E-quanimity. “I ain’t talkin’ to no press,” he said. “All that stuff is history. You want history, you can go to the library.”

And Hayes said, “Our guards get criticized for not playing defense, our forwards for not scoring, but I never hear a word about our center. Mitch Kupchak can shoot. He ought to play more.”

Hayes also had a prickly personality that rubbed some people the wrong way. He liked to blow his own horn and call his own shots. Some called him selfish, others called him petulant, and worst of all, some called him a choker. Alex Hannum, one of eight coaches he played for in the NBA, called him "the most despicable person I've ever met in sports."

And in game 7 vs the Knicks in 74 he asked the coach to just let him get out of the game over and over because he was sucking and wanted to literally give up and not play anymore.

The gold standard? The greatest jerk of all time?

Anyone have evidence of another player to approaches the Big E?

I will say that if only for this supposed quote Cedric Maxwell deserves consideration:

"You know what I like to do in the offseason? I like to get in my big, fancy car, drive around to construction sites, and watch guys work. Then I roll down the window and say, 'Guess what boys? I got nothing to do today.'"

If a player said that these days he would have to issue a formal apology and shoot 30 hours of NBA cares commercials.

Why wouldn't Corzine get off the bus?

And what was wrong with what he said about Kupchak? :confusedshrug: context?

Mitch was Wes Unselds backup. Hayes hated that Unseld didnt get hated on and he did. He was always calling out Wes. To which Wes responded:

“I do my talking to other players face-to-face, not through the press. I don’t dwell within Elvin. I don’t know what he’s thinking and I don’t care. The person I know is the basketball player, and right now he is one of the best in the league. What he’s done verifies that. We’ve had more than our share of run-ins off the court. But when he’s on the court he’s a professional and that’s all that matters.”

Phil Jackson sounds like the greatest douche ever. Supposedly got one of his assistants fired to keep Jordan and the management happy with him (don't remember the exact story). Actually everyone on those early 90's Bulls just sound like they were unbearable.

Would be interesting to know Hayes personally, he might be ok away from bball.

I think assault on women is worse than being a total douchebag in an arrogant way.

A few players have been done for that I think.

define space

Nasa had an astronaut try to photograph it and he missed by 100+ miles. Chinese astronaut also said he couldn't see it.

I've been there. It's no wider than a road. If you could see that wall then you could see every road in the world and it wouldn't be very impressive to talk about then would it?

(off topic but a couple days before i saw the wall I met chris paul in the Beijing airport and he was really cool. got off his golfcart to sign autographs for us because we were americans and recognized him)

Many are familiar with the claim that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from space or from the moon with the naked eye. This is simply not true.
From a low orbit of the earth, many artificial objects are visible on the earth, such as highways, ships in the sea, railroads, cities, fields of crops, and even some individual buildings. While at a low orbit, the Great Wall of China can be seen from space but it is not unique in that regard.

Furthermore, when leaving the earth's orbit and acquiring an altitude of more than a few thousand miles, no man-made objects are visible at all. NASA says, "The Great Wall can barely be seen from the Shuttle, so it would not be possible to see it from the Moon with the naked eye." Thus, it'd be tough to spot the Great Wall of China or any other object from the moon. Furthermore, from the moon, even the continents are barely visible.

I'd guess the population of the NBA was skewed to be more competitive then the average, but if you're that competitive you learn how to control it in spots when you're young or you'll never have any friends. As for their personalities otherwise, I doubt it's all that much different then average people.

Quote:
"He can't do anything with the ball. Don't give it to him." - Michael yelling at Paxson who passed the ball to Perdue

Glad you still feel intrigued by that link I put in the GOAT all-time threads, blaze.

As for the topic, I'll be up front and say at least 2 ex-Raptors that come off as scum bags of sorts:

Tracy McGrady and Chris Bosh.

Now I get McGrady's situation because of his age at the time, but he left totally out on trying to be "the man" and money. He even lied to the Chicago Bulls organization that he was going to sign with them, before joining Grant Hill in Orlando. He also left on bad terms with the Magic, but I can reason with him there, as the supporting casts around him generally sucked and Hill missed huge amount of games. There's also the fact he didn't try as hard all the time.

Bosh to me is such ass kiss. I know someone who did camera work for TSN (Toronto's main broadcasting center) meet behind the scenes of some Raptor players and said TJ Ford and Chris Bosh are actually 2 of the fakest people in terms of their personality (Anthony Parker being nicest he met) but when the cameras turn on, their all smiles.

There's also this situation, off-court, started in 2009:

http://www.thestar.com/sports/basketball/nba/article/607198--raptor-bosh-a-deadbeat-dad-lawsuit-says

http://www.playerwives.com/nba/toronto-raptors/chris-boshs-ex-girlfriend-allison-mathis/

And it's getting ugly:

I never liked him. Never felt he was all that special(hes Vin Baker...which is good). I feel hes soft. His comments on players not diving for balls near his knees and coach having to meet him halfway on working hard in practice....disgust me.

However....I wont say hes a scumbag over trying to pay "only" 2600 a month in child support instead of 30 thousand.

His kids mom would be sitting pretty on the 2600 if she so much as holds down a part time job. Up to me id say give her/the kid like 5 stacks a month and put an additional 10 a month into a trust fund for the kid to get at 25.

Who gets 18 million a year and says no to that deal?

I think I've seen a small clip of him in a fight with another player, but I don't know much about his playing days outside of him being a good shooter and having a remarkable run to a title in 1975. Did he get under opponents skin THAT much because of his trash talk ? Was he a racist ?

Wasn't trading for Cartwright the turning point for the Bulls rising to contenders, as they now had a defensive anchor vs opposing star centers ?

If Jordan had himself to build around his teams would be good. He wouldnt have traded Oakley for cartwright but beyond that who knows?

I bet he considers the Pippen for Kemp deal that got discussed late 90s.

Didn't Jordan also want Joe Wolf over Pippen in the draft I know I read that somewhere?

Wasn't trading for Cartwright the turning point for the Bulls rising to contenders, as they now had a defensive anchor vs opposing star centers ?

Not really. You swap the two they are still contenders. They were headed that way anyway. I said this of the situation a while back:

9. The last 6 games Charles Oakley had to close out his last regular season as a Bull:

17 points and 21 rebounds
14 points and 14 rebounds
17 points and 17 rebounds
18 points and 17 rebounds
26 points and 35 rebounds(16 on offense)
24 points and 24 rebounds

And back then he had such a nasty outlet pass. Dude would just sling that ho 90 feet to Jordan for dunks 2-3 times a game some stretches.

I HATED when welost him. Jordan did too. I also hate when people act like the teams MJ had in the late 80s were just al ltime bad supporting cast wise.

I wouldnt trade young Oakley for a good number of all stars. But in NY he became one of a crowd of guys and never just developed the way he was supposed to on the Bulls. He was like 23 or 24....

Still mad....

John Brisker: The ABA's All-Time Leader in Crazy

A 6'5" forward/guard from the University of Toledo, Brisker played six seasons in the ABA and NBA as a member of the Pittsburgh Pipers (1969–1970), Pittsburgh Condors (1970–1972) and Seattle SuperSonics (1972–1975). He averaged 20.7 points per game over the course of his career (26.1 points per game in the ABA, and 11.9 points per game in the NBA).

Brisker received a reputation as one of the most volatile players in basketball. According to his Condors teammate Charlie Williams, “He was an excellent player, but say something wrong to the guy and you had this feeling he would reach into his bag, take out a gun and shoot you.”

In 1978, Brisker went missing after he traveled to Uganda. Some rumors claim he went to Uganda as a mercenary, others say he was invited as a guest by Idi Amin. The last confirmed communication from Brisker was in April 1978, after which it has been speculated that he was executed by a firing squad when Amin was removed from power in 1979. He was declared legally dead in 1985 by the King County, Washington medical examiner.

John Brisker had a justified reputation in the ABA for provoking fights and drawing serious blood. Early during the 1971-72 season, the Utah Stars visited the Pittsburgh Condors at the Civic Arena. The Stars' Willie Wise held Brisker to just four points in the first half. Brisker then scuffled with several Utah players, and tempers flared before the game was over.

On November 4, 1971, the Condors visited Salt Lake City, and Stars' management arranged "John Brisker Intimidation Night." Ensign Ritchie explained it this way in that night's game program, which featured pro boxer Ron Lyle on the cover (above left): "Not that anyone on the Utah Stars team fears John Brisker. But just in case the husky, sometimes ill-tempered, Pittsburgh Condor forward gets out of line tonight the Stars' management has taken steps to keep all in control. Surrounding the court tonight will be five of the top boxers the Intermountain Area has ever produced. For tonight is 'John Brisker Intimidation Night' and it is the intention of the Stars to turn the tables on the high scoring Condor. Tonight it is Brisker who is on foreign soil and with the likes of Ron Lyle, Bill Daniels' professional boxer from Denver, Don and Gene Fullmer, Rex Layne and Tony Doyle standing in the wing, best he doesn't get far out of line."
Brisker was wise enough not to provoke all of these boxers at once, but it was an interesting spectacle with the boxers lining the court, and Brisker behaving himself for once.

MEMORIES OF AGUSTIN TORRES: "I remember the St. Patrick's Day ABA doubleheader held in Madison Square Garden in New York on January 19, 1971. The second game featured the Pittsburgh Condors against the Carolina Cougars. What I remember of the Pittsburgh game was the crowd on its feet in the second half as John Brisker kept burying 3-pointers, something many people had never seen before. They kept chanting his name and stomping their feet, and he kept firing. I don't remember how many he had but it could have been anywhere between 7 and 10 of them. This year, I was at a luncheon at St. Peter's College in Jersey City where Fred Cranwell is the college's public relations man (a position he held with the Condors). Fred always recalls sitting in his Condors office with Brisker. He was on the phone with a Condors' executive, and in his pocket he had a court injunction to prevent Brisker from jumping to Seattle in the NBA. All Cranwell could think about was that John owned a gun. He basically froze while the executive kept yelling on the phone, from long distance: "give 'im the damn papers!" Fred said Brisker was actually a nice sweet man with children. Some years later, Fred said he picked up Brisker's voice on his telephone answering machine saying hello. He didn't sound well, said Fred. He never heard from Brisker again. Fred told me, believe it or not, that Brisker may have gone to Africa to fight for Idi Amin during civil war in Uganda. Fred told me this with a straight face and swears it's true."

Playing in the ABA in the 70s with its hard-partying, quick to throw a punch, funktastic atmosphere is a good way to get your foot in the door in terms of cool. But to move beyond cool into badass, one would have to go above and beyond. That brings us to John Brisker.

What does John Brisker in a sombrero and pistols have to do with Pittsburgh or Condors?
Answer: Crazy.

The Badassery:
Even in a league filled with cocaine-fueled fist fights, Brisker's transgressions stood out, so much so that the head coach of the Dallas Chapparalls put up $500 as a bounty on Brisker.

It wasn't just opposing teams that fell victim to Brisker's madness. The man was such a lunatic that his own team had to hire some muscle in an attempt to control him. During practices, coach Dick Tinkham (great name) brought in an ex-football player whose sole job was to flatten Brisker the first time he got out of line. When Brisker proved to be too tough, the football player declared that he was going to the locker room to get his gun. Brisker was fine with that, since that gave him time to go to his locker and get his gun. Tinkham decided to cancel practice for the day.

Being the top authority figure of the ABA did not make you immune to Brisker's wrath either. In 1971, immediately after the All-Star game, Brisker walked up to league commissioner Jack Dolph and demanded his All-Star bonus right then and there. Figuring an intact clavicle was worth the $300, Dolph paid Brisker cash out of his own wallet. Can you imagine Ron Artest trying to publicly shake down David Stern today? Cool, now imagine Kobe Bryant playing in the ABA and being punched right in the face by John Brisker because, **** Kobe Bryant

Most Badass Act:

Most of what I've read/heard had to do with him bitching at his teammates all the time and being a ridiculously unpleasant person to be around. If it's true then it's hilarious that later he played alongside Kareem, another player who's not exactly noted for his warmth and pleasantness. That must have been a fun locker room with those two.

There are few happy Oscar stories. Teammates lived in perpetual fear of letting him down. Coaches struggled to reach him and ultimately left him alone. Referees dreaded calling his games, knowing they couldn't toss the league's best all-around player even as he was serenading them with F-bombs.

Fans struggled to connect with a prodigy who had little interest in connecting with them. After he finished in the top five for assists and points for nine straight years, made nine straight first-team All-NBA appearances, averaged a triple double for the first five years of his career, won the '64 MVP with Russell and Wilt in their primes and transformed the role of guards in professional basketball, his team still decided, "We need to get rid of him."

Even his hometown paper (the Cincinnati Enquirer) piled on by writing in February 1970, "For years, Oscar has privately scorned the Royals management; he has ridiculed Cincinnati and its fans; he has knocked other players, both on his team and others; and he has never been willing to pay a compliment. He is, has been and probably will grow old a bitter man, convinced that it was all a plot."

Of course, Oscar included this excerpt in his book thirty years later as proof that the notoriously right-wing newspaper was bigoted. Maybe both sides were right.

"Oscar was a perfectionist and he'd yell at you if you messed up. Then you saw that he yelled at everyone, so you learned not to take it personally."

[QUOTE=Zelmo Beaty]"He was such a perfectionist that I never could have lived up to his expectations. The way he'd scream at Wayne Embry: 'You dummy, catch the ball

From all the quotes Ive read, its mostly him just wanting people to play basketball the correct fundamental way and playing their best. Maybe the way he said it felt negative but mostly its stuff that we all say. He was known for being a perfectionist and from his quotes its just about looking at basketball at it should be. Then again KAJ felt the same way about playing the game and is one of the most fundamentally sound players in the history of the NBA. I doubt they have issues playing wise... most likely just never interacted at all socially, as they never did with anyone else.

InspiredLebowski

I do wish someone would make a legit documentary on Robertson. He's an asshole, but the racism he encountered is a huge (probably THE) reason why. He won back to back state titles in Indiana for Crispus Attucks High in Indy, which was the first high school state title for any all black school in the country.

Then when they won they couldn't have the celebration in the city. Because "blacks will riot" or whatever the prevailing "wisdom" was at the time.

Far as I know none of the big Indiana colleges recruited him at all.

Speaking of documentaries. Oscar's interviewed in an upcoming documentary about Roger Brown, who's got a crazy story all his own. And he comes off as legitimately gleeful, I'd never seen anything like it from him.

Watch the trailer here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2uBaHQxHQA4). And also learn about Roger Brown, the NBA screwed that guy.

Yeah, along with the rest of the all-star group.

Not much information really provided about that:

http://www.nytimes.com/1988/01/20/sports/nba-union-hints-at-strike.html

It would have sucked if they didn't have the all-star game happen because the league wasn't really popular back in 1964 as it is now.

Also, Oscar views on the college and pro game, still seems bitter about the league's front office:

R. Barry, E. Hayes, & O. Robertson are the 3 HOF guys who I have heard about them being assholes. Shaq was/is very egotistic, MJ was also an asshole. Kareem was very distant from his teammates. Chamberlain was selfish, but he wasn't a prick to his teammates.

I've always heard nothing but good things about Duncan, Magic, Hakeem, Bird, & peak Walton as nice teammates. Bird might get at you once in a while (like he did with Ainge a few times), but he had great respect for his teammates, especially DJ.

Bird to me seems like the guy who is not social and seems serious to strangers, but if you know him and if he is comfortable with you you will see his light side. McHale has said that Bird had a great sense of humor and he had people rolling during his speech when the dream team got inducted into the HOF. In many ways he reminds me of myself.

Hakeem punched his teammate in the face in practice because he didn't give him the ball.

The only reason why his teammate even took the ball from him was because they were suppose to be doing a different type of drill and Hakeem deviated from it.

In the 1976 WCF the defending Finals champs Warriors were playing the the Suns to get back to the Finals and defend their crown.
In game six or seven of the series Barry gets in to a fight with the Suns and none of his teammates come to his aid. Barry then throws in the towel being pissed off at his own teammates and the Warriors lose in game seven.

The intro sets it up nicely:

"The way I looked alienated a lot of people," Barry says. "I've seen films of myself and seen the faces I made. I looked terrible." He closes his eyes to the memory and shakes his head. "I acted like, a jerk. Did a lot of stupid things. Opened my big mouth and said a lot of things that upset and hurt people. I was an easy person to hate. And I can understand that. I tell kids, There's nothing wrong with playing the way Rick Barry played, but don't act the way Rick Barry acted.' I tell my own kids, 'Do as I say, not as I did.' "

What bothers him isn't that he's not beloved.

Another ABA legend who was hated by both opponents and teammates was Warren Jabali (originally Armstrong), partly for an incident in his rookie year when he slugged opposing player Jim Jarvis and then stomped his head with enough force to break a couple of Jarvis' teeth, and partly because in his playing days Jabali was a black militant who openly disliked white people.

He did later in his life apologize for the Jarvis incident and he also mellowed and matured in his racial attitudes.

Asked if he would play out the season and test the free-agent market, Sprewell said: ''Why would I want to help them win a title? They're not doing anything for me. I'm at risk. I have a lot of risk here. I got my family to feed.'' Sprewell is due to make $14.6 million this year.

Hakeem punched his teammate in the face in practice because he didn't give him the ball.

The only reason why his teammate even took the ball from him was because they were suppose to be doing a different type of drill and Hakeem deviated from it.

"You always give dream his change."

Man that was like back in the 80s when Hakeem was Akeem. Hakeem was pretty much a goon when he was in his 20s, before he converted to Islam in his 30s.

"Utah Jazz rookie DeShawn Stevenson has been charged with statutory rape for having sex with a 14-year-old girl, a prosecutor said Tuesday. Stevenson, a 6-foot-5 guard who went from high school directly to the NBA last year, was charged last week in Fresno Superior Court, chief deputy district attorney Liz Mitchell said. The 20-year-old Stevenson, a Fresno native, faces up to three years in state prison if convicted. The Fresno County Sheriff's Department said a warrant had been issued Monday for Stevenson's arrest, but his whereabouts Tuesday were not known. Stevenson is accused of having sex with the girl during a visit to Fresno in the past six weeks, Mitchell said. She didn't have any other details. "

Its said that he and some other guy picked up the 14 year old and a 15 year old....took them to a hotel...got them drunk on brandy....

The girls admitted that it wasnt forced or anything. But still...........

Never mind the rape case. Deshawn Stevenson, his friend, and them pedo bitches should all be locked up for drinking Brandy. That shit is nothing but a much more shittier, watered down, much more cheaper version of Hennessey. I drunk Brandy once and barely got tipsy.

The Warriors have not reached the WCF since then.

Rick denied doing this in another article (liar).

And in game 7 vs the Knicks in 74 he asked the coach to just let him get out of the game over and over because he was sucking and wanted to literally give up and not play anymore.

The gold standard? The greatest jerk of all time?

Anyone have evidence of another player to approaches the Big E?

Nah he's carrying the cake.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1094188/index.htm

"One does not have to go far to find people who dislike Hayes intensely. Alex Hannum, who coached him in San Diego during Hayes' most turbulent years, calls him to this day "the most despicable person I've ever met in sports." Reporters have been damning him for 10 years, the result of having had to chase him for low-yield interviews, and having been dealt with brusquely or stood up."

Somebody was on here talking about the Big O..... the dude wasn't really anything except he was hard. Like flint where sparks will fly at all times.

lol, old ass post, but I dunno. I can't be mad at people who say that shit. Is that really jerky because you don't want to appreciate something that someone wants you to appreciate? Those comments "I've seen a big wall before" are hilarious to me.

If you can listen to any of those things he said and not crack up laughing... or at least crack a smile, even in his presence, you are kind of too uptight to me.

By responding in an angry way to people's statements like that, you are reinforcing that behavior. Cuz if it was me I'd be driving to big walls every chance I get, every time I got dude in the car, and be like "What about this one tho...?"

Didn't Jordan also want Joe Wolf over Pippen in the draft I know I read that somewhere?

He wanted Kenny Smith (UNC) over Pippen. Smith wound up being taken right after Pippen at #6 (Smith was Sacramento's second choice after Pippen).

There was debate within the Bulls organization about Grant or Wolf at #10. MJ was in favor of Wolf.

Just throwing out a few that I'm sure have been mentioned.. then I"ll go through and read the entire thread.

Jordan - Tons of stories
Kobe - Rape case. Not that I believe it, but still. Not many athletes get that
Lebron - Dropping his warmups, piece by piece, right in front of that kid
Malone - Some rumor of a 13 yo girl?
Pippen - No tipping, beating his girl
Tiger Woods - I don't care that he's not a baller, he needs to be mentioned.

Stacey Augmon

Two nights later on March 13, Sandoval continues, "Augmon became angered over a question that an Orlando Sentinel reporter asked Magic guard Steve Francis. "That's a stupid [expletive] question," Augmon allegedly said, according to several reports. When a male Florida Today reporter told Augmon that they were interviewing Francis and not him, Augmon shouted obscenities and began moving toward the reporter. A Magic employee stepped in front of Augmon, who then threw a bottle of lotion at the reporter. The bottle did not strike the reporter but some of its contents splashed his clothes." Augmon later apologized to the reporter by purchasing him a new suit made of fine Italian silk

Anyone mention Magic Johnson?

Notorious for "sex parties" at his home in the 80s in LA. Would invite women who were wannabe singers/models/actresses and have them perform oral sex on all the guys in front of everyone. If you weren't partaking, Magic would loudly shame you into getting into the action.

Also refused to be drafted by the Bulls (lol) and got a head coach fired.

Jerry Buss?

The above "sex parties" were actually inspired by Dr. Buss, who'd be hosting similar shin digs at his home for years. He'd also celebrate his son's birthday by taking him to the Bunny Ranch brothel and having father/son splurge on hookers. I don't know if that makes him a scumbag or a really nice guy :lol

Larry Bird?

Has a daughter from his first marriage, refused to talk to her for 20 years, wouldn't even drive 15-20 minutes (she lived 10 minutes away, lol) to talk to her when she was a teenager. Also apparently has a daughter out of wedlock who he also refuses to acknowledge.

Kobe Bryant:

When Smush Parker attempted to make small talk with him about the NFL one day Kobe informed Smush that he wasn't allowed to speak to him because of his status as a nobody NBA player, lol.

Personally I don't know much about Kobe, but what I've heard is that girl in Colorado definitely wasn't the first time Kobe strayed and it wasn't the last time either.

The 70s was waaaaaaay crazier than the 80s/90s too.

Malone - Some rumor of a 13 yo girl?

Not a rumor. Malone actually had sex with a 13 year old girl when he was 20. His illegitimate son is Demetress Bell, who is the offensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys.

To this day, Malone has never acknowledged Bell as his son even though a paternity test done through a lawsuit revealed that there's more than a 99% chance he is the father.
