I like it and yes I want it enforced on all teams including the Clippers to reduce flopping tremendously in the game. Still surprised they called it like this, especially on the biggest star in the NBA already. In the preseason no less.

Refs shouldn't be able to determine a flop or not on the floor. Why weren't they doing this before if they could see it. Players getting fined afterwards by the league I'm fine with, but I wish in place of fines they would get technicals (after the game). Which I think would pretty much eliminate flopping pretty decently.

Ask for that play, I don't feel LeBron flopped. There was a lot of contact there to me.

Wasn't a flop.

But do think it was a predetermined message to Lebron to let him know that he's a flopper and no one is safe from the whistles.

Well, that or it's the NBA playing PR in the preseason and saying the same thing except it's a lie. Probably that.

There was contact. The ref thought the contact was increased by LeBron's flailing is all I can figure. Sort of like how Kobe got that flagrant for whipping his arm back on a jumper a few years back.

It was the follow through with the right arm after the play that did it.

Bron flops harder in his sleep than this no homo

I agree 100% it's definitely a message, look for CP3, Griffin, Manu, Harden and the likes to get similar treatment early in the season.

arm flail + spin

I'm LeBron hater, and I don't think it wasn't even that bad compared to some real NBA flops. :facepalm

Preseason. They are enforcing for regular season. And it looked as if LeBron knew what he wanted to do but had to much speed going in. Its going to be an interesting season.

I don't mind this call. It's preseason and the league is just sending the message that flopping offensively or defensively will not be tolerated. His reaction on that play, given his size and all, was just way too much.. we've seen plays where the defender doesn't even make contact and he snaps his head back like he got shot. Terrible acting job (although he's getting better every year).

Wasn't a flop, but the fact that he just ran into the dude, and even attempted to play that off deserved a T.

At halftime, that ref told the Heat he was wrong and apologized for getting the call wrong.

Its preseason for officials too.

This is unbelievably bad.

Travel, offensive foul, and half-a-flop in the correct order.:lol

The refs should rather try to get their offensive foul calls right. James rams down alot of defenders with set feet/position and gets away with it.

I support the measure, but don't think that particular play was a flop. Lebron was coming hard and fast, and that's substantial contact. It wasn't a CP3-like flop where he got a love tap and spun around 5 times and fell.

I see some folks saying the official later admitted it was a poor call, so I guess that's good. However, it's at least a little alarming to see how trigger happy they were to whistle it. Throughout this process, I've been a supporter of punishing those who fake contact, but I've been extremely critical of the idea of attempting to distinguish whether someone is embellishing contact or not. Making a judgment call on a play like the one linked here is extremely tough and perhaps not possible. After contact, sometimes flops look like real basketball plays and sometimes real basketball plays look like flops.

tomkiddo91
10-24-2012, 09:46 AM
The refs aren't supposed to call flops, that's for the league office. Not sure what happened.

Pushxx
10-24-2012, 10:04 AM
I guess people have missed the other twenty completely phantom calls the refs have made this preseason in travels, charges, carries, etc.

Happens every preseason. Refs just wanna send a message before the foul calls mean more.

Jax
10-24-2012, 10:22 AM
If they wanted to enforce something this is not the way to do it, now Lebron has an excuse.
And no, this was not a T for flopping, maybe they thought they saw a push by Bron. Maybe.

jlip
10-24-2012, 10:25 AM
There is one thing that's worse than flopping. That is the officials being as big of a story in a game as the players.

Lebron was fouled...

Ridiculous call, lol.

pauk
10-24-2012, 11:30 AM
Horrible call... what did he do? It was a hit/collision/foul/blocking foul... they called the blocking foul on Gerald themselves... its not like he could take the hit and instantly stop any kindof movement like a robot....

Also, glad they got that blocking foul correct, i hope they get T'ed up for flopping aswell in the future... because thats all they do to Lebron when he drives in or even brings the ball up on the fastbreak, which is to dive in headfirst infront of his feet doing an oscar/stunt act in hope of the reff calling it a charge on Lebron...

I fully admit, I came in here to laugh at his flop... But after seeing the video:

1. It wasn't even a flop. It might of been slightly exaggerated contact but even in that demo video they said that's allowed.

2. I thought that the new rule was that they get fined after the game for it, not a tech during the game.

plowking
10-24-2012, 12:35 PM
They need to cut out with this rule. Who cares if players flop? Let them look stupid and lose fans. Griffin has probably lost a lot of value just due to the fact he plays the way he does. Its punishment enough.

No one had a gigantic problem when Vlade did it back in the day. It was called crafty and creative. Yes, CP3 and Blake are often excessive with their motions but there are cameras everywhere which show how stupid they look. Players don't need to be fined or teched for this.

DuMa
10-24-2012, 12:38 PM
the NBA rescinded this Tech just right now

They T'd him for supposedly throwing his chest out towards the defender after the whistle, not for the "flop". They can't really do that. You can only fine a player after the game for flopping.

tmacattack33
10-24-2012, 01:03 PM
They definitely didn't call a flop on that play. If so, the defender "flopped" just much as Lebron did.

I don't know...maybe Lebron said something as he got fouled.

On a positive note, Lebron looked pretty fast on that play. Doesn't look like he's slowing down as much as the haters want to believe.

Looks like the ref just blanked out for a minute. I guess this type of stuff happens sometimes in preseason games.. even the refs finding it hard to stay awake.

He's looked a lot better athletically this preseason than he has before on the Heat, by a very noticeable amount. Why, I have no idea, but I just hope it continues.

I kind of don't like where this T'ing players for flopping thing is going... id be happier if they just swallow the whistle on players that have reputation for flopping... something like x player drives to the rim, flops and gets the call... then the next time he goes to the hole, gets raped and no foul is called, just to send a message.

I'm sorry but thats not a flop

fans see flops different than what the referees do

if thats how calls are gonna be made, some games this season will be a let down..

EDIT:
So they didn't call it as a flop?

Lebron still taking his 3steps. But one thing at a time.

I thought i was the only one who saw that. Only nicca i know who can pick up his dribble outside of the 3 pt line and his "2nd" step is right near the rim.

I don't think he flopped tho, but i'd probably call that a charge

brwnman
10-24-2012, 10:04 PM
It was a power-trip move by the ref. There was no flop. He was trying to go up for the shot, it's natural for the hands to go up in that situation. Hope this doesn't continue into the season. I am all for T'ing up actual flops, fining and suspensions. But it has to be blatant, and not incorrect like the one I just saw...

He was trying to power through and get a shot off. People act as if you aren't allowed to move your body at all.

I don't care who does it, but are people going to complain about flailing now? Some movements, even flailing in certain situations are human nature or just acquired patterns throughout life. You aren't going to change that, and the NBA should get rid of the rule that is simply there to gather more money for them.

Refs should learn to make accurate calls rather than sending a message....habits in the preseason could lead to terrible calls all season.....
