its been deemed a category 1 hurricane in philly

As we learned in Katrina, windspeed doesn't truly tell you destructive force of a big, big storm. The winds aren't crazy strong, but they extend at tropical storm force for almost a thousand miles. (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57541836/hurricane-sandy-experts-see-record-destruction-potential-in-storm-surges/)

Secondly the storm is moving slow which means, 24-36 hours of tropical storm winds. Roofs that withstand the hurricane gusts in the first few hours made give out later in the storm.

Third, the storm surge is going to coming in almost due west which might be the worst possible direction, so NY, NJ and CT shore lines may see up to 11ft of storm surge if the center of the storm is far enough north. Also since the storm is slow, they are expended the surge to last for three high tide cycles. The Eastern Beaches in NYC already have the water topping the sand dunes and we a quite a while from landfall of the storm.

The winds will do damage, but the water is going to do a lot of damage.

In a measurement of pure kinetic energy, NOAA's hurricane research division on Sunday ranked the surge and wave "destruction potential" for Sandy — just the hurricane, not the hybrid storm it will eventually become — at 5.8 on a 0 to 6 scale. The damage expected from winds will be far less, experts said. Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters says that surge destruction potential number is a record and it's due to the storm's massive size.

"You have a lot of wind acting over a long distance of water for hundreds of miles" and that piles the storm surge up when it finally comes ashore, Masters said. Even though it doesn't pack much power in maximum wind speed, the tremendous size of Sandy — more than 1,000 miles across with tropical storm force winds — adds to the pummeling power when it comes ashore, he said.

The storm is going make a left and then a right as it slowly goes north, so it's going to double back over some areas.

I'm in Southwestern CT, and couldn't be anymore in the path. My house is three blocks from the Housatonic river, and my work is in a low lying part of my town Stratford, called Lordship, which is sort of a marshy penninsula hanging out between the river and where it dumps out into Long Island Sound.
We are ****ed.

I'm at work now with a limited force, mostly getting parts up off the floor, sandbagging doors, and reinforcing windows.

For home we taped up our windows, loaded up on batteries, brought a bunch of firewood in the house, have a fire built ready to light, charged up five cell spare cell phone batteries (a droid advantage) and the tablets in the house, and loaded up on Ice, which we can stuff in the fridge to keep it cold if we lose power. I also started a mass text that touches base with all my closest peeps so that a single response hits everyone in case anyone needs help. Last year we went out for about 3 days after a much less invasive storm. Big part of the problem with this that isn't really touched on nationally is that it's set to hit pretty close to an extremely high lunar high tide, so our banks are pretty high right now and the rain hasn't even started.

It's gonna be a hairy ride.

Then another bad storm surge at 8-9 am tomorrow.

So it looks like the storm is intensifying.

Another issue for NYC skyscrapers is they are saying the winds are higher at elevation....closer to category 2 winds.

From weather underground (http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/article.html?entrynum=2280) Record Storm surges expected. NJ hit hard, NYC subway flooding possible.

This morning's analysis from NOAA's Hurricane Research Division put the destructive potential of Sandy's winds at a modest 2.9 on a scale of 0 to 6. However, the destructive potential of the storm surge was record high: 5.8 on a scale of 0 to 6. This is a higher destructive potential than any hurricane observed since 1969, including Category 5 storms like Katrina, Rita, Wilma, Camille, and Andrew. The previous highest destructive potential for storm surge was 5.6 on a scale of 0 to 6, set during Hurricane Isabel of 2003. Sandy's storm surge will be capable of overtopping the flood walls in Manhattan, which are only five feet above mean sea level. On August 28, 2011, Tropical Storm Irene brought a storm surge of 4.13' and a storm tide of 9.5' above MLLW to Battery Park on the south side of Manhattan. The waters poured over the flood walls into Lower Manhattan, but came 8 - 12" shy of being able to flood the New York City subway system. According to the latest storm surge forecast for NYC from NHC, Sandy's storm surge is expected to be 10 - 12' above MLLW. Since a storm tide of 10.5' is needed to flood the subway system, it appears likely that portions of the NYC subway system will flood. The record highest storm tide at The Battery was 10.5', set on September 15, 1960, during Hurricane Donna.

Best one was Anderson Cooper a few years ago hiding behind a huge flower pot during a hurricane. In a huge blast of wind the flower pot suddenly leaves the scene and Cooper's left laying on the ground trying to crawl back inside the lobby of this hotel. Camera man is safe and sound in the lobby shooting through the glass. Cooper's yelling in the mic something about his camera man laughing at him

Power just went out for a second:cry:

I was without power for 5 days during an ice storm in the mountains in 2009. My cell was fully charged but the only 2 cell towers in the area were out as were the land lines. All the roads were blocked with downed trees and power lines. It was the strangest feeling to be so isolated and cutoff from the rest of the world. It was then that I achieved total consciousness, which is nice.

Yes, but that has been from rainwater, I think in this case they are talking from flooding from seawater. They just said on TV saltwater flooding would be particularly bad for the subway. They showed subway entrances covered with plywood and sandbags.

The facade of the building collapsed, so it's still standing, but you could look right into people's whole living rooms, like in a doll house.

Yeah, but the building owner is probably just getting rent from them, they don't care what business is there.

Statement from MTA Chairman Joseph J.Lhota on Service Recovery

The New York City subway system is 108 years old, but it has never faced a disaster as devastating as what we experienced last night. Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on our entire transportation system, in every borough and county of the region. It has brought down trees, ripped out power and inundated tunnels, rail yards and bus depots. As of last night, seven subway tunnels under the East River flooded. Metro-North Railroad lost power from 59th Street to Croton-Harmon on the Hudson Line and to New Haven on the New Haven Line. The Long Island Rail Road evacuated its West Side Yards and suffered flooding in one East River tunnel. The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel is flooded from end to end and the Queens Midtown Tunnel also took on water and was closed. Six bus garages were disabled by high water. We are assessing the extent of the damage and beginning the process of recovery. Our employees have shown remarkable dedication over the past few days, and I thank them on behalf of every New Yorker. In 108 years, our employees have never faced a challenge like the one that confronts us now. All of us at the MTA are committed to restoring the system as quickly as we can to help bring New York back to normal.

Toronto had high winds last night and quite a bit of a downfall. One person has been reported dead due to getting hit by a overhead sign and power is out due to trees knocking down power lines. With that being said the east coast got hit hard and suffered a lot more damage, condolences to anyone who lost someone.

BTW, this was only a category 1. I can't imagine how bad this could of been if this was a stronger storm.

:( heard about that, the lady died. RIP

It's very random. I never lost power, and no damage. Internet just came back. Some of the blocks in my area have 4/5 trees down. The whole streets are blocked off. Driving around this afternoon was a trip, you think its ok because your block is ok but you go two blocks down and it's ****ed up.

Funny thing is I moved 6 months ago from Long Island City to Astoria. I'm away from the water now so I'm ok. The thing with the damage is weird because you can be in one spot where there's literally no damage, then walk 2-3 blocks away and there's trees down everywhere. NYC is not at all prepared to deal with something like this. They're estimating $20 billion in damage.

I have two concerns: 1)An already failing economy becoming even worse(especially here in the city) and 2)Increased taxes to cover the damage.

Walked down to the riverfront in Brooklyn tonight. Very spooky, half of Manhattan is dark and behind the black outlines of building you can see all the lights glowing from Midtown and higher.

That powerplant that exploded has backuplights on, but that is literally the only light you see below 14th street.

Somehow it's an even weirder feeling that the blackout when the whole city was dark.

They want to still have the NYC marathon this Sunday. Going to be an emotional day if they do.

We just recently got our power back. It's been so cold for the last few days.

Don't ever underestimate the speed of the storm surge. I know people who've been through it say they can't stress it enough but holy shit I've never seen anything like it. I thought the water coming in would be visible and obvious enough so that we can act accordingly, but it just sneaks up on you so quietly before you know it the water is coming up to your knees. The damage done to my house was limited but this is the first time I was legitimately scared of the storm. Seriously **** floods. Those waters can suck my dick.

Where in Brooklyn are you?

My brother is without power and heat in Red Hook. My in-laws in CT, have a flooded basement.

My grandmother's nursing home in Sheepshead Bay had to evacuate and they took her a place on Long Island, which then lost power. They then said they could move them back to Sheepshead Bay but we haven't been able get through on the phone yet. My brother should be able to get out their tonight.

My best friend grew up in Breezy Point right near where the fire was. His Mom's house was flooded and probably will be condemned. She was at a nearby convalescent home. They told my friend they were evacuating so he didn't go to pick her up, but they never did evacuate. The whole first floor was destroyed. He tried to drive out to see the house, but they are not letting folks in yet, but the parts of Rockaway he did see were devastated.

A group near me is packing up clothes and food to go out there, so I'm gathering up some stuff.

I work in Hoboken on the Water, still flooded out there. That Path train station with the water pouring out of the elevator was my station.

There's another storm coming. Please consider making a donation to the Red Cross. This is going to be bad for a while.

It's hard to tell with the reflection in that picture but it's an overhead shot of supplies being sorted and packed. That must have been from yesterday, it was way more crowded with goods and people today. Outside the whole front of the store was piled high with supplies too.

i was driving in New Orleans, toward the french quarter. Started raining hard. One of those emergency broadcast things came on like 30 seconds into the rain, said to pull over. Im like **** this, 10 minutes and im home. Then i see the water start to come behind me. I pull over. Less than 1 minute literally after the storm started tehre is about a foot of water in the street and getting higher.

Scary shit.

The electricity pole in my street was knocked down and people said it could take as long as to Saturday to get it fixed. I didn't see anyone come and fix it. It just miraculously came back on. Our cellphone service is still crap though. Not sure why that is.

True that. Yet, Bush gets all the blame for katrina.

So funny how people absolutely depend on fossil fuels but want to talk so much shit about oil companies. I can bet that it's especially predominant in the tri-state area. Very hypocritical.

Yeah, just spoke with my brother. She's doing OK just tired. 98 years old still upright and walking. He said the whole first floor to the place is gone and the workers were ripping up the carpeting when he was there.

Wouldn't that be a good reason to find an alternative fuel source then? Oh, that's right oil companies bribe politicians to not find an alternative source.

As for the storm it hit my town pretty good although nothing compared to other areas(my town is in perfect shape compared to others).. I still don't have power, half of the gas stations are empty or closed and the ones that are opened have HUGE lines on them, some stores have been vandalized, alot of homes are flooded and some sections had to be closed of since they were right on the water(and completely flooded), trees are everywhere, more than half of my area doesn't have power(no traffic lights) and it's cold. It kinda looked like a doomsday scene, it was pretty surreal. I can live without hot water, lights, electric for cooking, heat, etc, but I do my internet and a outlet to charge my laptop though.

I'm still eating like a king though :oldlol:
