Last year my neighborhood was hit by a tornado. I complained the whole while I was in traffic trying to get home and see if my complex was still there. This is a non-story. About 50% of insensitive remarks are probably not meant to be offensive, just a result of poor decision making/a focus on ones own problems. As a poster said previously if you complain about slightly burned food while people around you are starving, whether you meant to offend them or not your comment is still offensive.

I have had similar incidences of insensitivity, although i would never consciously offend others (I'm a nice person and dont see the benefit in tearing others down).

You have zero clue about why this makes perfect sense. Anyone who has lived in Florida for a decent amount of time gets spoiled with regards to hurricane resistance.

Unlike the north -or pretty much the rest of the country- houses, buildings, traffic light infrastructure, etc in Florida are all built to much higher codes.
