High crime and toll bridges every 5 miles. Chicago is a very liberal city, if you're a conservative type Houston or Fort worth is better bet.

fukk that. snow is the worst and its consistent, not some random event like earthquake. shoveling snow and driving around in that crap, especially if you're not in school anymore where you don't get snow days off unless its real bad, snow has to be the worst thing to deal regularly deal with. cold weather is a huge downside too, that could even be numero uno worst thing to deal with. i f'n hate the cold, and then adding wind on top of that? Chicago could be the worst other than what i hear about the food there. the other thing is thats like a perfect formula to get fat.

Crime is an obvious problem in Chicago but what about corruption???. Must not be fun to run a business and having to deal with corrupt city officials. Although I've heard that Chicago is going through a reforming stage currently.

London is the best. Weather unpredictable but never gets too hot or too cold. Free healthcare so you can jump off a building and it wont cost anything to fix your spine. Also I dont think we ever have natural disasters. Crime in some areas but pretty safe overall compared to what Ive heard about some cities in US. Also London has the novelty of being british which your cities dont have. Also we have a lot of stand ouy features which makes it a field day for tourists, eg landmarks, red buses, black cabs, etc. Also extremely diverse so hawt girls frok every background. So I think we are the best.

I have always thought the best place for me to live in America would be Hawaii or somewhere on the west coast. Liberal, high income, low crime rates, etc.

LA is in a very arid climate and the already scarce water resources in the region are being depleted. It makes no sense that so many people live there and on top of that the population is increasing at an alarming rate. The same thing can be said about the majority of the southwest in general.

Earthquakes aren't a big deal. Been down here in southern california my whole life and lived near the epicenter of the last really big one in the early 90's. Aside from that one there hasn't been an earthquake out here that even closed businesses for a day. Even that one only closed stuff down for two weeks before power and water got restored.

I'm sure there are plenty of reasons why it's not perfect down here, but I wouldn't rate earthquakes that high. I'd take the risk of earthquakes over yearly storms shutting everything down. Consider that my neighbors had a pool party today and some of my friends considered surfing. In November! Every year it's like this and we've only had that one big earthquake that whole time. Pretty good odds I think.

Hell no, I was at Chicago station (so right in the middle of the city) and my wallet got stolen by 2 black guys. The museums are amazing, architecture nad stuff, but like NYC the metro was ancient. The theft definitely soured Chicago to me.

doesn't make sense to me how people can talk about best cities to live in without factoring in weather. weather is like the basis for why a area is good/bad to live. nobody ever says the Bahamas or Hawaii suck. its like Cali envy with people from the east coast, which is mostly based on weather. it affects so much of what you can do, or your day to day outlook.

Lisbon in the top 50 with the same score-range as Chicago, NY, Barcelona and Madrid? Wasn't expecting it, but the city sure as a kick-ass transport system, safe and good infrastructure along with pretty much half of the country's universities concentrated inside the city.

Too bad this excessive concentration in Lisbon means the depletion of services and population from the rest of the country (except Oporto).

New York is bigger and has more diverse than Chicago, but it's also much harder to find affordable areas in New York. Chicago also feels less hectic and cleaner.

the crime's really on the south side and the west side. the north is pretty safe.

the weather in Chicago is horrible. it's horribly cold and horribly windy all winter. it won't be consistently warm until July. I'd take Vermont's and New Hampshire's weather over Chicago's weather, that's how bad it is.

If I had a lot of money (and I mean a lot, like a net worth of $10 million+), I'd pick New York hands down, but I think it's a lot easier to live the good life in Chicago than New York for us regular folks.

Personally, I'd like to live near a beach. Not a crappy northern beach. I like the white sand beaches in Florida and South Carolina.

I also like living here in Texas. Bunch of cities in a close proximity. Houston, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, and San Antonio are all within a few hours of each other. There is also a great economy, and lots of jobs.

It's also close to New Orleans if you want to party for a weekend.

If it weren't for the fact that I have a good job in my chosen career field, and that I wasn't well settled, I would definitely move away from Texas.

I loved visiting california recently and would love to live in san fran or orange county. Also visited Hawaii and really enjoyed Honolulu.

Phoenix

Phoenix blows. It's a transient city with no culture, food or identity of it's own. Summer is hell, and it lasts about 8 months. Add in the lousy air quality and frequent dust storms, and you have a genuine sh!thole. About the only thing it has going for it right now is the glut of cheap homes due to the housing bubble, but that's about wiped out.

Now, move north about 60 miles and AZ is exquisite. Clean air at 5000 ft, affordable housing, little crime, eclectic mix of people. 85-90 with no humidity in the summer, cool weather and a little snow in the winter that melts by noon. Beautiful. But I hate any day that involves going into Phoenix.

I guess you and I have different standards then. When a large section of the population lives in slums and crime is at a much higher level than the other cities mentioned here, I think that's a fair description. And weren't there riots throughout the summer? Doesn't sound like most of the people in Rio actually are in agreement that they have such a nice life there.

There werent "riots", there were protests. These protests were due to an unfair increase in bus fares, they were not caused by people thinking that they dont "have a nice life".

Virtually all major Latin American cities have crime and poverty, that doesnt mean they are all shitholes. If poverty and crime makes Rio a shithole, then Chicago is a shithole.

Yes, Rio does have its slums, but it also has the most expensive neighborhoods in all of South America. Rio is a beautiful city full of beautiful people.

Yeah... none of this is really selling me.

The fact that what many trustworthy news outlets call a riots are merely "mass-scale protests over municipal services" according to you isn't really selling me Rio as the best city to live in.

The fact that other cities in Latin America also have a huge part of the population living in slums and a huge crime problem doesn't seem very relevant either.

The point is that there are many cities in the world with no true poverty and a negligible crime rate. I'm sure Rio is great to live in if you are rich and you exclusively stay in the rich enclave part of town (just like any big city), but the above mentioned factors make it a far cry from the best in my estimation.

Even my hometown Portland OR has a few neighborhoods that I would not really want to walk through at night. Exactly which major cities have no poverty and a negligible crime rate? Aside from a few places in northern europe, I cant think of any.

Are you really putting Portland's bad neighborhoods up there with Rio's slum cities? :wtf:

The city where I live for instance, Amsterdam, there is no real poverty. And bad neighborhoods? At worst some streets where you won't feel comfortable as a woman alone at night, but otherwise not really. And I'm in no way saying this place is the best to live in.

No, I am saying every major city has neighborhoods that are less than ideal. I have visited Mumbai, I have seen and smelled slums before, and while you wont see any true slums like this in Portland, that doesnt mean Portland is perfect. I have never been to Rio, but it seems like a nice city to me, in spite of the crime rate.

Depends what poverty means to you, if you are going by the real worldwide definition which is living with less than one dollar a day then Rio doesn't have much poverty either, if you mean inequality then yes its a big thing in most big cities (remember occupy wall street?)

Rio has the perfect combination of climate and natural beauty i have ever seen in a city. It has its problems with public transportation (subways are packed during rush hours) but it has the infrastructure of a big city in most areas. An apartment in Rio can cost up to 20 million dollars, its the second or third most expensive city in the world (i think it only loses to Tokyo), which clearly means that a lot of people with money like to live here. Also the job market is growing and most people are employed.

Also women here are just unbelievably hot.

Crime rate is high in the extremely poor areas because of drug wars, most innocent and working people dont get killed because of it. Yes there are still a lot of problems that we have to solve but so do most big cities, and hundreds of years of politicians dragging their feet didnt help either, but overall there has been a huge improvement in the last 10 years, specially considering that most drug lords and gangs have been imprisioned or killed by the police in the last 2-3 years.

Yeah... none of this is really selling me.

I find it fascinating that people who claim their city (or some city) is the best really seem to be doing it out of some sense of pride, rather than experiences.

I grew up in Silicon Valley and I had the "best" childhood. My parents weren't well off (immigrants), but my sister and I managed to:

-Attend public schools that ranked in the top 5% from elementary through high school.
-Safe enough that we could walk home from school alone as a kid after being 10 years old
-Beautiful weather
-Opportunity to participate in many many extracurriculars (hoops, violin, sax, acting, singing, computer etc)
-Quality people (value effort, education and had a stable family environment)

Now, of course many of those childhood friends live in SF. They claim it's the best city in the world etc etc. I have been living abroad for the past 4 years in various countries. It surprises me how a city like Seoul is basically better in so many ways than San Francisco. Significantly larger (10 mill+ people), significantly better transportation, significantly better cost of living, significantly better safety, significantly less homeless/crazies/etc etc.

A lot of the reasons people "claim" their cities is better is stuff they have never experienced themselves. Most of my friends haven't visited the GG Bridge, Alcatraz, the Presidio, gone to all the great restaurants on Zagat guides, segway'd through Golden Gate Park, visited SF Zoo, taken a Bay Cruise etc etc etc etc.

I did all of that when I visited and stayed in SF for 3 weeks last month (with my foreign visiting gf). It was so fun and amazing. However, none of that stuff is really what makes a city great for living. It simply makes it great for tourism.

The real reasons are the ability/opportunity to find work, progress your career and be close to your family/friends. New York, per what I like, is a better city than any other. However, it doesn't have my family, friends and familiarity of life. Home base should feel like home base.

I'd think Melbourne and Sydney would be up there for best cities in the world to live in. Very laid back, low crimes rates and even lower violent crimes rates, pretty easy to get jobs, good education, good health care system, reasonable rent if you live in the suburbs. No real natural disasters either. There isn't really any suburbs in Melbourne that are flat out slum areas you can't go to, sure there's some dodgy areas but it's not like how some american suburbs are.

But I agree with above, most people will rate the city they grew up in.

Los Angeles/Southern California literally has the best weather and hottest bitches in the entire country. Pretty tough to beat.

Only place in the United States that I think can claim to have hotter bitches is Miami. Anyone think another city has them beat?

Seriously though, you cant **** with any of the big cities in Hawaii. Nicest place(s) in the States I've ever been to. If you're talking about LIVING somewhere, nothing compares really (in the US). Otherwise, La Jolla (San Diego), or some of the nicer spinoffs of LA or SF are the nicest... CA baby:pimp:

Yup we do have the cream of the crop finest bitches in the nation, except for Miami. But then you're in fvcking Florida and that sucks ass. Not trying to deal with Florida's archaic laws and judicial system bullsh1t.
