View Full Version : Best and worst NBA commentator teams

Both national TV and the guys that you hear on the league pass games.
Best:
Kevin Harlan and Reggie Miller
Marv Albert and Steve Kerr (don't really like the czar though)
Dick Stockton and Chris Webber (wish they were on TV more often)
Ian Eagle and Greg Anthony (Nets)
Bill MacDonald and Stu Lantz (Lakers)
Mike Breen and Walt Frazier (Knicks)
Worst:
Jazz commentators - huge homers
Mike Smith (Clippers) - see above
Mark Jones and Dorris Burke - if you're gonna have a female commentator or sideline reporter, at least have her be somewhat attractive and...not annoying (like the great Erin Andrews for instance). Also, Mark Jones is boring as shit.

thats why I dont like Doris Burke, it doesn't matter that shes a woman.
what I don't like is that she has never been in the trenches so to speak and her comments dont mean anything to me because of that

I'm personally not a fan of Mike Breen. Also, I can't say for sure, but I feel like the Bulls commentators, the crew with Stacey King, can sometimes be obnoxiously biased toward the home team.
In contrast, I'm on the inside looking out, but I feel like the Pistons crew of George Blaha and Greg Kelser do a fine job of striking that middle ground between appealing toward the home crowd while respecting any given opponent. Former Pistons guy Fred McLeod was a little more up front on his bias, and I think that can still be seen as he calls games in Cleveland now. I liked him when he was in Detroit, but I knew full well he was grossly in our favor. Bill Laimbeer was like that too, but I don't think anyone would ever not expect that out of him.
Rockets/Nuggets take the cake for being the worst
Jazz and Clippers are bad too. I hate listening to craig bolerjack talk about basketball, dude doesnt know shit. Matt Harpring is alright but he is still a big homer. I wish theyd get Karl Malone to do it, sure he would be a homer but at least he would be funny as hell.
Pistons announcers are cool dudes and very nonbiased. I think the Heat announcers are very good too, they are rare in that they will often applaud the refs for making a good call, even if it was against the Heat. I like Mike Breen and JVG, Marv Albert and pretty much anyone (Marv da gawd ), and Hubie Brown as well.
IF you type in "Stu Lantz" on google the third suggestion is "Stu Lantz is annoying" :lol

I also love Bill Walton with anyone and i did enjoy Jeff Van Gundy with Mark Jackson a 2-3 years back
only one i truly hate is Clippers homer Mike Smith.

Not really a fan of most announcing teams these days. I grew up when the announcer teams actually talked about the game at hand 95% of the time. Now, it's like, "Kobe hits a jumper. Lakers by 2 over the Rockets. Now, back to how well the Thunder are playing." Maybe I was spoiled by the rapid fire play by play of Chick Hearn, but most of the time, you barely get any info about the play at hand.
I would hope that someone would introduce technology to remove the announcers completely and allow me to listen to the game as if I were in attendance.
I can dream, right?

When Mark Jackson was the color guy for us he was great. I know a lot of people hated him on ESPN with his "mama there goes that man" but he had great chemistry with Marv Albert and I thought he was hilarious.
My favorite commentator teams are the Nets, Knicks, Lakers, Clippers and maybe the Mavericks.
Nets are obvious because I'm a fan.
Knicks are unbiased and I love Clyde. I learned words from him when I was younger:oldlol: It was like studying for the SAT and watching basketball at the same time.
Lakers are also unbiased and they bring energy to the game, making the game more fun to watch.
Same with the Clippers, I love when Ralph says OH ME OH MY or SLAAAAM DUNK.
Oh and I think Stacy King for the Bulls is hilarious also. He called Kwame Brown a T-Rex because of his small hands:roll: .
The ones I absolutely hate are the Blazers and Celtics.
They're so biased. When the opposing team has a really nice dunk they show no energy and completely ruin the play. I feel like calling a play with energy makes the play a lot better.

I can dream, right?I think the move away from the Hearn style of play-by-play likely has to do with the appealing more toward the viewing masses as opposed to the listening masses. I'd suppose people now accept that TV is not radio and play-by-play can thus complement a game as opposed to describing it so completely in depth. Perhaps they found the moment-to-moment commentary redundant, while extra analysis was viewed as contributing something worthwhile.
Also, I feel like an NBA game (maybe in Orlando) once experimented with a silent broadcast. It'd be a nice option, but I feel as though I might end up going back to the commentary choice.

I just want the option. The Lakers have done the no commentary thing before, and I really enjoyed it. It is kind of sad when you can get more info about a play from the arena announcer than from the guys calling the game. :facepalm
I understand why they are going away from that as simulcasts are a thing of the past, but it was a good way to learn the game and really get a sense of what was going on- even while watching. It also seemed to bring a sense of urgency to the game as well. Now, the game seems to be an afterthought while the announcers just babble about whatever they want to. Also, I really don't need to be told how unselfish so-and-so is or whatever.
As for the network announcement teams, anyone on TNT is better than anything on ESPN by a mile.

Mike Tirico / Hubie Brown - really like Tirico's play-by-play
Bill Land / Sean Elliott (Spurs) - probably cause I'm a Spurs fan
Mike Breen / Walt Frazier (Knicks) - unbiased

The Bulls announcers on CSN, I do not enjoy listening to them at all.
I am often quite understanding of a hometown slant, but they sort of make me feel like everything about the opposition is terrible and anything good they do is lucky, while on the flip side, everything is awesome about the Bulls and any lucky shots they hit are a result of outstanding skill and execution.
On the past three trips down the court, I've heard all caps renditions of "LEANING TOWER OF PISA!" when Marco Belinelli scored, "POPPITY-POP-POP-POP-POP!" when Noah made a jump shot, and "BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!" when Kirk Hinrich hit a three pointer.

Miami is pretty good with their commentators. They are pretty unbias for the most part, and professional and great usually.
Clippers aren't that bad imo. I don't think they are as unbias as the Lakers or Miami, but they are ok. Not the worst.
The worst are the Celtics. They are so bad that it's funny at times. Homers and so bias.
The Raptors have the best music by far to me:

I think GSW and Sac's crews are really good (the like 15+ combined Emmies will support that). Especially when Sac has Bill Walton and Jim Gray guest-starring on the crew - hilarious. I think I remember liking San Antonio's and Portland's.

Most commentators are biased, but some are very nasty. Meaning that they insult and demean opposing teams and their players rather than give real analysis. Other guys are homers but are not nasty. nobody can top mike breen's BANG!!!I can't recall if I already said it in this thread or another, but I really do not care for Breen or his catch phrases. He does not feel basketball authentic to me. I don't know what his background is, it just seems to be commentator first (which is fine) but his basketball opinions often seem to bleed through and I do not frequently agree with them. I prefer a neutral primary commentator and I think he often tries to be, but does not always succeed.

Marv Albert needs to go away.
The Suns picked up his brother Steve Albert this year, who's much worse than Marv. He's just boring as hell... I miss Al McCoy and Gary Bender doing Suns TV games. Albert is tolerable sometimes, but he's just not exciting... doesn't know how to get fans pumped up.
I thought Tom Leander was terrible though until they picked up this dyke sounding chick Ann Meyers to do commentary duty once in a while, and she's beyond awful. She makes me want to mute the TV. Women shouldn't be commentating for a male sport... it just doesn't work.
At least we still have Eddie Johnson though I guess... he's humorous at times. But really, the Suns announcing/commentating crew has gone so far downhill in the past few years(much like the team itself) that it's depressing to listen to. I can't imagine any teams commentary being a whole lot worse. At least when EJ is commentating it's tolerable, but when Ann Meyers is in for him the game is practically unlistenable.

In defense of the Celtics' team (Tommy and Mike)...they're not so biased that they don't give notice when players on the opposing teams do something noteworthy. Tommy loves praising big men in particular (he's got mancrushes on Duncan and Noah). A lot of broadcast teams out there won't even do that (someone mentioned the Bulls' guys earlier). There's no shortage of praise for the opponent, but make no mistake about it: they're paid to focus on the Celtics for Celtics' viewers and that's what they obviously spend most of their time doing. This season in particular, they've both been pretty quick to point out the shitty things the C's are doing out there, too...maybe you have to have watched every game to see it, though.
I'm actually enjoying the addition of Scalabrine to the team, as well.
The one area that's totally indefensible for me is when Tommy starts on the refs, even on those incredibly rare moments when he's actually right. Gorman could do more to reign him in on that but it's almost like he's scared to. That's the one area where I constantly pull a :facepalm cos Tommy never lets that shit go.
I miss Joel's voice calling Lakers games, no homo. Lawler and Smith are just funny to listen to. Miami's broadcast team is better this year but the dude who does their PA announcements after each score...easily the worst I've ever heard.
Edit: if it were possible, I'd have Bill Walton calling every game for every team all season and post-season. Yes, every team.

Hubie was at his best in the late '80s/early '90s. Nowadays he just rambles on while reading off a guy's stats while saying "come on!" a lot. Every once in awhile he'll have a good moment of analysis though.
I wish Bill Walton was still announcing national games. He's what people want Barkley to be. Thank god for the Not Bill Walton twitter.
Breen is only tolerable if JVG is there to kick sand in his face. He's the worst at hiding his bias for which team he wants to win.
Burke would be better if she stopped trying to sound hip and dropped the random ghetto slang. There's something about her voice or the way she emphasizes certain words that doesn't sit well, can't quite put my finger on it.
Reggie Miller used to be so bad he's good but he's too refined now and he's just sorta bad. I think he was at his funniest when he was just starting and still had the full blown Kermit the frog voice and he didn't know what he was doing. I still remember the '08 playoffs Nuggets vs. Lakers when he was trying to sound dramatic and yelling for the commercial outro and his partner
was like "Reggie, you OK?" Can't find a youtube clip though.

Bang!
_________ banks it in!
What a move by ______________
You'll be in a coma by the end of the first quarter. He probably says "won't go!" like 40 times a game.

Thank you to all those who put the Blazers at the very top of your best commentator lists.
Me and my partner, Mike Barrett, do our best to provide you with great analysis for our great Blazer basketball games.
I love me some Mike and Rice

As much as I hate the Lakers, their commentators are really good. Good knowledge and understanding of the game, and fair calling of the games.
Amongst the worst are the Heat announcers. They're as shamelessly biased and removed from reality as Heat stans on the internet.

Warriors announcers are underrated. Bob Fitzgerald to be specific who's the play by play guy who also did the announcing for USA basketball on NBC Sports Network.
