One of the few aspects of his game I like and the most visually appealing to me. Also undeniably effective over the years.

[QUOTE]I truly believe the finger is a secret throughout the basketball world.
My belief is that the top players know the finger secret, but tell few
about it.
A few years ago one of my students went to Kobe Bryant

i love his shooting form especially from his younger days, its more appleaing than ray allens for me personally. The one thing that has changed though it seems like when his shooting three's he uses his legs a lot less and a lot more of his threes are short when he misses

That finger secret crap is a crock of bull.. shooting isn't that hard and 90% of players in college and up can make most shots with a high rate of consistency without any secrets. Its shooting with a defender in your face that makes it hard.

:confusedshrug:

Dont find Kobes, Lebrons, Durants, Wades and so on forms anything special, they are normal, good and orthodox.. but nothing thread worthy....

But.. Ray Allens shooting form/technique on the other hand.... that is beauty... that is perfection... and the result of that (actually making his shots better than anybody) is a bonus... If you want to emulate a shooting form (including work ethic on that aspect)... Ray Allen is the way to go...

If you want to emulate anything from Kobe then look no further than his footwork/post moves.... its fantastic... that aspect of his game stands out much more and is much more thread worthy than his shooting form.. :P

A bit flat (like Jordan for that matter) but it's eye pleasing and effective.

what is this 'finger' motion

[QUOTE]THE GENIUS OF KOBE

In December, 2003 I attended an early season Los
Angeles Lakers game. Because a friend gave me tickets to a
pair of courtside seats, I went early to watch the Lakers
warm-up. Kobe Bryant is an intriguing player. Considered
one of the best athletes in the NBA, Kobe has developed
into one of the best shooters in NBA history. He currently
holds the NBA record (along with Donyell Marshall)
for most three pointers made in a game with 12.
While watching the Lakers warm-up, I paid careful
attention to Kobe and his release. I discovered Kobe uses a
slightly different release than what I was teaching.
Instead of pulling the index finger slightly down with the
thumb sticking out, he would pinch his shot with the index
finger and his thumb. When he did this, the other three
fingers would stick up almost like a small group of stairs.
In other words, the pinkie sticks up the highest, followed
by the ring finger and finally by the middle finger.

Carefully I watched his release and how the ball rolled off his index finger on each
shot. Driving home that night I thought about Kobe

He kinda shoots like me, so yeah, I say it's pretty good.:pimp:

The point is to have your hand a bit sideways on the ball so your index finger will be in the middle of the ball and then make sure the last finger to touch the ball is the index finger, this will happen if you put your index finger to your thumb when releasing.

:hammerhead:

The finger makes it easier to shoot under pressure because it provides you with a direct aim, if your index finger is pointing above and through the basket and you release the ball from your index finger it will go where you aim heavily reducing misses to the sides.

Just like shooting a riffle, a bow, darts you have to aim, the finger helps you with this.
There's more to it than just the finger, becoming a one eyed shooter and so forth, but it definetely works when you put it together.
Does Ray Allen do this? Did Reggie Miller? Jordan? Anyone else? Seems to me like a bunch of arbitrary over-analysis of what Kobe does. Its like if you found out that everytime Steve Nash shot the ball he farted a little, and that was his "secret" and you told everyone that if you want to be a good shooter you have to let out a little fart every-time. And write a whole article about it. And it might really help you shoot, but really. Anyway I digress. My point is, does anyone or has anyone else ever used this "finger" secret in the NBA? If no, then its a crock of bull.

It's not a secret at all, like half the guys I play pickup ball with use that follow through. I don't think it actually makes any difference at all anyway, as you said, all time great shooters generally don't use this technique (Ray, Reggie, Nash, Dirk don't, for example).

As long as your hand isn't doing something weird, how you hold your fingers should make very little difference in your shot.

Teaching kids to do that technique would be terrible since it's not a secret or a fundamental.

It just won't work with most people.
