Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus has resigned, citing "extremely poor judgment" for having an extra-marital affair, NBC News reported.
"Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position," Petraeus said in his resignation letter. "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."
"This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation," Petraeus said in the letter.
Mike Morrell, the deputy CIA director and a long time CIA officer, will likely be offered the job as acting director, multiple sources told NBC News.

What is this 1872? Why does cheating on your spouse = incompetence at work to some people?

I doubt that's the real reason. It's probably a cover up to sell to the American public.

That was a reply to the OP's useless speculation. The explanation for him resigning I heard was that any CIA operative that had blackmail material out there was considered compromised and a lower-ranking operative would get canned for this so he was holding himself to the same standard. I don't know about all of that myself and it's certainly not blackmail material if everyone knows it happened but it's certainly true that high-level government appointees get fired over scandals.

Watching Piers Morgan now and author Donald Kessler is saying that Petraeus used his military email account to carry out his relationship with his biographer and after she broke up with him, he sent her thousands of emails trying to get her back :oldlol:
Wouldn't be surprised if it was the woman who sold him out to the federales :oldlol:
Also, the timing of this whole thing is alarming to say the least.

How convenient that the Director of the CIA resigns the week before the Benghazi hearings begin again in Congress over something that had zero effect on his ability to do his job.

To be clear I think Petraeus is getting ahead of this story before the other shoe drops. However, at this point I see nothing to indicate the other shoe is related to Benghazi.
The way the affair was discovered is the reason he had to go. We'll see how this plays out, but I think we are going to find out its more related to his work.

And his resignation has zero effect on Congress's ability to subpoena him. You have to stop seeking rationalizations for your misconceptions and start hearing the facts first and then using those facts to come to informed conclusions. Or you can remain stupid.

Being married a long time is no reason to abandon exercise. Unless she has some kind of disability she should at least try to give him something to look forward to at night. Ultimately he should stay faithful but that's a lot harder when it's being monogamous to someone you feel no physical attraction to whatsoever.

Well he stepped down probably because the affair was soon to be public knowledge. The affair was discovered by the FBI when they were looking into a harassment complaint against Paula Broadwell. In that case they looked into her email and saw all these emails to and from the general. This opened up possible security issues with Petraeus. (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/11/us/fbi-said-to-have-stumbled-into-news-of-david-petraeus-affair.html) So it goes to his professional judgement as well.

[QUOTE]My wife is having an affair with a government executive. His role is to manage a project whose progress is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership. (This might seem hyperbolic, but it is not an exaggeration.) I have met with him on several occasions, and he has been gracious. (I doubt if he is aware of my knowledge.) I have watched the affair intensify over the last year, and I have also benefited from his generosity. He is engaged in work that I am passionate about and is absolutely the right person for the job. I strongly feel that exposing the affair will create a major distraction that would adversely impact the success of an important effort. My issue: Should I acknowledge this affair and finally force closure? Should I suffer in silence for the next year or two for a project I feel must succeed? Should I be

This is so funny on so many levels. The CIA fumbles Benghazi, and the FBI discovers the f'n DIRECTOR of all people is cheating on his wife. The Director can't even keep his secrets safe and it's an entirely different organization that spies on him and finds out. The CIA has become a joke.

KevinNYC

So this Petraeus thing is nuts.
So his biographer/mistresses was sending threatening letters to another woman who knew Petraeus, another younger, attractive woman like herself, telling her to stay away from Petraeus......the biographer/mistress probably assuming Petraeus was into her or already involved with her.
So the other woman calls up an FBI agent she knows and they start to investigate the threatening letters. The agent is pulled from the case because, it's found out that he had sent shirtless photos of himself to the other woman. So the agent goes to a Republican congressman who goes to Eric Cantor to press the issue.
The new information shows that Petraeus told Broadwell this summer to stop sending the harassing e-mails after Kelley told him about them. Law enforcement officials said the e-mails indicated that Broadwell was jealNoous of Kelley’s friendship with Petraeus. His warning came about the same time Petraeus ended the affair with Broadwell.
However, The FBI did find a bunch of inappropriate emails from the other woman to Petraues's successor in Afghanistan
The FBI probe into the sex scandal that led to the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus has expanded to ensnare Gen. John R. Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced early Tuesday.
According to a senior U.S. defense official, the FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of “potentially inappropriate” e-mails between Allen and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa woman whose close friendship with Petraeus ultimately led to his downfall. Allen, a Marine, succeeded Petraeus as the top allied commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.

You're Not Going To Believe The Latest Developments In The Petraeus Sex Scandal
Paula Broadwell, the original other woman.
In the past 12 hours, the news flow in the Petraeus sex scandal has taken a turn toward the bizarre.
Jill Kelley, the mysterious woman in Tampa.
Let's recap:
The center of gravity in the scandal has shifted to a mysterious woman in Tampa Bay whom many of our top military and law-enforcement brass appear to be obsessed with.
This woman, Jill Kelley, is the wife of a surgeon and an "unpaid liaison" between the public and a nearby Air Force base. This "job" seems mainly to include hosting and attending parties and emailing with generals and FBI agents.
Paula Broadwell, General Petraeus's mistress, lost her mind and sent anonymous harassing emails to this woman.
Kelley got freaked out by the harassing emails and called the FBI, thus triggering the investigation that, so far, has sucked in the head of the CIA, a top general, and an FBI agent.
The FBI agent assigned to investigate the case lost his mind and emailed "shirtless photos" to the woman.
Another top US general, John Allen, lost his mind and sent 20,000-30,000 inappropriate emails to the same woman.
General David Petraeus showed up at a party at this woman's house in a 28-car motorcade.
The woman, Jill Kelley, has hired the same lawyer that defended Bill Clinton in the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the same crisis PR person who represented Michael Vick.
The woman insists that she has done nothing wrong and that she's the victim here (did anyone suggest she has done anything wrong?).
The FBI agent who sent the shirtless photos of himself to the woman called Congress two weeks ago and leaked news of the investigation to House majority leader Eric Cantor.
Paula Broadwell's dad says, tantalizingly, that "this story is about something else entirely" and that the whole truth will eventually come out.
"Classified" material has been found on Paula Broadwell's computer, but both Petraeus and Broadwell deny that it came from him.
The FBI just raided Paula Broadwell's house.
If this story really is about "something else entirely," we can't wait to hear what that is.

Who is this Jill Kelley chick? Aside from having the same name as a pornstar is she running a swingers club for upper level military in Tampa?
It's one thing if it's all just about sexual impropriety, but something entirely more disturbing if national security was compromised. So far the most damning thing I've read is that Paula Broadwell gave a lecture in Denver last month where she said that the CIA had secretly detained prisoners at the consulate in Benghazi and that the 9-11 attack was an effort to free them. This begs 2 questions:
1. What is the CIA doing detaining people in secret when that activity was supposedly stopped in 2009?
2. How the hell does Paula Broadwell know this information?

I've always had this light hearted view of capital hill as filled with sex crazed politicians with equally sex crazed spouses that are into swinging. Blame it on those movies with similar stories. Maybe there's more truth to that than we know. Maybe Broadwell's hubby doesn't even care and they were in an open relationship and this is more of an annoyance to them. Or maybe these doctors who are married to Broadwell, Kelley, etc. are poor men who didn't realize their wives are ****ing capital hill dick for fun. lol
I admit that I'm one of the people who's more interested in the relationship(s) part of this scandal than any intelligence breach...I mean really, the breach if anything was minor. People will be fired. Congress will have their day to blast anyone they choose and it will be over....but as the relationships between these men and women become juicier and juicier, it's hard not to pay attention. Makes you believe this is pretty common place. Interesting insight nonetheless.
To be honest, if I was a simple guy who had a wife so close to generals and politicians, I'd be paranoid as ****...then again I don't know if the husbands of these ladies are "simple guys". lol

It's interesting that both husbands are physicians. They work crazy hours, on-call, etc. It becomes very easy for either spouse to cheat as there's a built-in plausible excuse. Even easier for these top security guys.

With crazy schedules and open attitudes perhaps her hubby gave her the green light to pursue this relationship, although that wouldn't explain the e-mails she sent to Kelley.
With so many people and such a weird set of circumstances, it's safe to assume we will never get the whole story as to what really was going on (ie. are they all swingers, who really facked who, etc.).
However, if Broadwell's hubby is a normal guy and was clueless to all of this, you gotta feel sorry for him. Realizes his wife pissed on their relationship to get some 4 star general dick....then has to come to terms that the entire world knows his wife became some kind of maniac who clearly fell in love with this new sense of power and the d!ck the power came from lol. His kids will know eventually when they're older if not already. Couldn't be more humiliated. Some people can survive affairs, doubt many people would want to try when your spouse put you through this much shit....almost makes me feel sorry for Ms. Broadwell also...she must feel like the biggest idiot alive. lol
But ya, if they are hiding out in DC right now, I'd probably not be in the same room as her in fear that I'd strangle her to death. lol
I need to become a psychologist because I have too much fun dissecting these things.
What are you neighbors saying about this?

What are you neighbors saying about this?
Mostly that they're shocked and feel sorry for the boys. It was quite a commotion over there last night with about 8 FBI agents carting stuff out of the house and at least twice that many local media peeps in the front yard.
In a non-related coincidence it's been pointed out that Rielle Hunter, John Edward's mistress, lives in the same neighborhood. I've never seen her though.

Who is this Jill Kelley chick?... is she running a swingers club for upper level military in Tampa??
This seems like utterly crazy speculation until the word Tampa. Something about the word Tampa makes it seems plausible.
Also the way Petraeus and Broadwell communicated made the FBI nervous.
They didn't email each other. The both had the password to the same gmail account and would open up a draft and write an email but never sent it. Then the other would log in later and read it and do the same thing.
This is a trick terrorists use.

Isn't there rumors now that Jill Kelley is also hooking up with General Allen the current top commander in Afghanistan and is up for the supreme NATO commander position along with the commander of US European command.
So she might have been doing 2 generals at least.

Being married a long time is no reason to abandon exercise. Unless she has some kind of disability she should at least try to give him something to look forward to at night. Ultimately he should stay faithful but that's a lot harder when it's being monogamous to someone you feel no physical attraction to whatsoever.

The Kelly lady and General Allen were friends. Both based in Tampa and socialized together. Far as I know that's it. The "inappropriate emails" were him calling her a sweetheart. "20-30 thousand pages of communication" and all they have is him calling a friend a sweetheart. Because she's a friend and did something nice. I watched bits of it on the nightly news it and it was some big time TMZ shit.
They did show clips of Broadwell's house getting searched, carrying out PCs and whatnot, check for sensitive info. Rufus lives in a nice neighborhood. Only a matter of time until he's implicated.

bipartisan? are you ****ing kidding me? The only reason that's even an issue is that a desperate political candidate tried to politicize Benghazi.
Even the Congressional hearings on this, the witnesses had to agree that all the disputed security measures were for Tripoli not Benghazi which are as far away as Brooklyn and Charlotte are.
They also had to agree that that the disputed security measures would not have deterred a coordinated attack this large.

No criminal charges have been filed against Broadwell, whose glowing biography of Petraeus, “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus,” was published in January. But on Monday night, it appeared the feds’ investigation was far from concluded. About 10 agents entered Broadwell’s tony Charlotte, N.C., home at 8:40 p.m. wearing blue latex gloves and carrying bags and boxes. They photographed the exterior of the house, entered using a key and could be seen scouring rooms and apparently collecting evidence for two hours.
A prankster even ordered a Domino’s pizza to be delivered to the residence, adding to the circus atmosphere. Investigators didn’t answer when the deliveryman rung the doorbell.

More Dilworth news.
From the comments:
Looks like Dilworth might want to hire a tour guide...if just for the media
I think I've found my calling.
The man police and neighbors called “The Dilworth Flasher” after he was accused of exposing himself to women has been arrested again – this time after police say he exposed himself near a hospital.
Michael Wayne Adams, 36, was arrested on Monday and charged with indecent exposure, public *********ion and with violating the city’s open container ordinance.
Police arrested him after they saw he exposed himself near Carolinas Medical Center.
Adams was arrested in February after he was accused of flashing women – including once as he rode a bike.
Information from the women, as well as anonymous tips, led investigators to Adams, police said.
And police say they linked him to other flashing cases on South Boulevard and in uptown.
Records show Adams is a felon with convictions dating back to the 1990s. He’s been convicted of assault on a female, breaking and entering and assault with a deadly weapon, according to the N.C. Department of Correction.
Adams was released from jail on an unsecured $6,500 bond.
Anyone with information about the cases is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Man the Petraeus legacy is falling fast, a year ago, I never thought we'd see articles like this. (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/18/opinion/sunday/a-phony-hero-for-a-phony-war.html) This was written by the grandson of a three star general.
A Phony Hero for a Phony War
The genius of General Petraeus was to recognize early on that the war he had been sent to fight in Iraq wasn’t a real war at all. This is what the public and the news media — lamenting the fall of the brilliant hero undone by a tawdry affair — have failed to see. He wasn’t the military magician portrayed in the press; he was a self-constructed hologram, emitting an aura of preening heroism for the ever eager cameras.......
he conned the news media into thinking he was the most remarkable general officer in the last 40 years, and, by playing hard to get, he conned the political establishment into thinking that he could morph into Ike Part Deux and might one day be persuaded to lead a moribund political party back to the White House.
THE problem was that he hadn’t led his own Army to win anything even approximating a victory in either Iraq or Afghanistan.

Outside of a few kooks there was no cry for the impeachment of President Bush with all that went on during his administration and outside of a few kooks there won't be any calls for impeachment of President Obama over what has happened during his administration thus far. I do agree a thorough investigation should take place to find out what happened, how there was a break down and how we can fix it so it never happens again. All the hysteria from both sides needs to stop.

No one could, because we won the actual war, but lost the political war and occupation. Under current rules no general from our history could win an occupation like that.
