Yup, they are fascinating. And so many species... It's like you have to think inbreeding made them to be this crazy. Paradise birds, I will get to them.

Half of this butterfly is male and the other half is female. This is not photoshop or a frankenbug from one of our collections.

Bilateral asymmetrical gynandromorphism can occur in some arthropods. They can form from either the loss of a sex chromosome early in development or from the fertilization of a binucleated egg. In Lepidopterans, males are ZZ (homogametic) and females are ZW (heterogameti
c). The most common way an individual Lep could have ZZ and ZW cell karyotype is through the double fertilization of a the binucleated egg (Z+W).

This two headed albino milk snake was born last year in Florida.

The condition is known as Polycephaly and occurs when monozygotic twins fail to separate completely. Most organisms with this condition will not live for long, but occasionally you will get cases like this one, where the snake(s?) seem healthy enough and can live for years.

The heads act independently of one another, and will fight over food given the opportunity. Watch a video of their owner feeding them here: http://bit.ly/11YYkHT

<...>the Brazilian treehopper is one of the strangest creatures I have ever seen!

From io9: "...Note that the 'balls' on the antenna-like structure aren't eyes, but simply spheres of chitin. A first guess is that it's a sexually-selected trait, but those are often limited to males, and these creatures (and the ones below) show the ornaments in both sexes. [Art Historian Martin Kemp, an expert on visualization in art and science] hypothesizes-and this seems quite reasonable-that 'the hollow globes, like the remarkable excrescences exhibited by other treehoppers, probably deter predators.' It would be hard to grab, much less chow down on, a beast with all those spines and excrescences.

Note, though, that the ornament sports many bristles. If these are sensory bristles, and not just deterrents to predation or irritating spines, then the ornament may have an unknown tactile function."

What do you think of this hairstyle? This is the Mary River turtle (Elusor macrurus), and its green mohawk is made up of algae. This often covers the shell as well as the head, and helps to camouflage the animal.

yes... its rump forms the trapdoor to its little homey cave.
it's rump also looks like it would make a very fine ink stamp.

Rainbow Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus deglupta) is the only representative of the family of eucalyptus found naturally in the Northern Hemisphere; it has a trunk covered with a thin brown bark that comes off as the tree grows, revealing new multicolored barks, with green, yellow, purple, blue, orange and pink, among other colors, that turn brown when mature and slough off exposing new colors, which makes the trunk always have a new color.

The wolf spider is the only species of spider that carries its offspring this way - live, hatched and wriggling on her back!
After a gestation of 9 to 27 days (dependent on temperature) during which the eggs are carried around in a silk globe attached to the mothers stomach, the offspring hatch and climb on to her back. They stay there until they're ready to hunt alone.

Painted bat (Kerivoula picta), found in Asia; it measures up to approximately 20cm of wingspan and feeds on insects. The strong colors are meant to fool predators, because it makes the bats look dangerous, since they live in vulnerable places.

When a pregnant dusky shark was caught in the Gulf of California in 2011, fishermen found quite a surprise. Alongside 9 normal pups was a white pup with a single large eye. Other abnormalities were also noticed - the pup had no pigment, no nostrils, a bump on its snout and deformed tail and spine. It's very doubtful the pup would have survived outside the womb.

Sea pen is a marine cnidarians, colony of polyps (small anemonelike individuals) working together for the survival of the whole. It got its namebecause of its appearance that resembles an oldtime feather pen; serves as food for some sea stars and nudibranchs (sea slugs). Belongs to the order Pennatulacea and feeds on zooplankton.

Blanket octopus (Tremoctopus sp.) found in tropical and subtropical oceans, the female can reach up to two meters, while the male has only around 2,5 centimeters in size, and she is the only one who has a membrane that resembles a veil, which opens to look bigger and scare away predators (such physical differences between female and male are known as sexual dimorphism). These animals are immune to the toxins of the Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis), and use their stinging tentacles as a defense. The male has a special tentacle where it is stored sperm (called hectocotylus), and during mating this tentacle approaches female's mantle, fertilizing thousands of eggs, the male dies soon after this, and the female will carry the eggs until they hatch.

Imagine if your spouse was 40,000 times heavier and a hundred times larger than you. This is reality for the male blanket octopus, which was recently spotted alive for the first time off Australia's northern coast.

Red-lipped batfish do not swim very well, so they use their pectoral fins to walk around the sea floor. Their dorsal fin is not needed for balance, so before reaching adulthood it changes to a single projection over their head. This structure, known as an illicium, attracts prey. The red-lipped batfish live in the waters around the Galapagos Islands and are found about 30.5 m (100 ft) below the surface.

Photo of the day – This exquisite little thing is called the Himalayan Cutia, which, as its name implies, occurs in Asia’s mighty Himalayas, where it inhabits broad-leafed forests in the lower-lying foothill regions. Markus Lilje captured this glorious image in Bhutan, where this particular species is always a favourite amongst both guests and tour leaders alike – and for obvious reasons!
himalayan cutie!

Where you snorkel?

It's so hard in the sea, I was trying to dive down in the Mediterranean sea, I could barely get as deep as my lenght. In the lake it's way easier.

It's a lovely, vivid pictures about some of the rodents around the world. There's a lot of production going on shooting these stars, so in times it's hard to tell whether it's CGI or just make up. A good story to view, with a caveat don't expect it to be more realistic than a Deadpool.
