Good picks, what about single-season teams? One from each, or would one be represented multiple times in your top 5?

Actually no - 2003-04 Spurs were #1 in opponent points per game, opponent FG% and defensive rating to 2003-04 Pistons #2 in corresponding categories.

2008 Celtics....

The Heat have yet to actually put together a great team IMO. I thought we'd have seen one last year, but Wade and Bosh were not healthy the entire time in the playoffs.

People are really saying flawed teams like the Heat and OKC are some of the best teams they've ever seen? Makes me feel weird. Or maybe just old. Even the good Spurs teams from a couple years ago would embarrass these guys, and that wasn't even that long ago. Would probably handle the '08 Celts too, but at least those guys could D up and had some sort of actual ball movement

If that's what they've seen, that's what they've seen. This topic is only asking for the best teams people have seen, which entirely depends on when they started watching basketball. If someone wasn't watching basketball yet when the Spurs were winning titles, then they wouldn't be on that person's list of best teams they've seen.

#1 - 96 Bulls
#2 - #5 - Close your eyes and pick either the Lakers or the Celtics who played each other in the Finals that decade.

Bird, McHale, Parrish, Dennis Johnson - are you freaking serious?
Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Byron Scott, Norm Nixon, Jamaal Wilkes - Seriously?

There are some junkies on here. One thing I wish for you is that you could have watched the Celtics vs. Lakers in the 80's. Today's Finals compared to then? Child's play.

Not sure I can choose 5. It's definitely down to these teams for me and it's all purely memory driven rather than stat sheet. Also have to consider who they played against.

'67 Sixers - oldest team on here and the greatest team of all time

'68 Sixers - better team than '67 but blew up with injuries in the playoffs so if it has to be rings they're a scratch

'72 Lakers Wilt Chamberlain Happy Hairston Jimmy MacMillian, Logo & Goodrich
easily one of my favorite teams ever!!

'73 Knicks Roll Royce Backcourt all you need to say but that entire team was so stacked...

'74 Celtics Hondo Cowens & JoJo run wild and beat Kareem in his glory day

People will say the '70s NBA was the weakest era but I don't agree at all. Later 70s yeah maybe, but not the first half. Fact is, I could argue that was the Golden Age of the NBA... Kareem, Wilt, Oscar, Logo & Goodrich, Rolls Royce Knicks, Havlicek & Cowens... the original bad boy Chicago Bulls...

'82 Lakers Magic goes on a rant and gets his coach fired... rooks coach Riles wins ring

'83 Sixers Moses Malone ran over everyone to make sure aged Dr. J got a ring

'86 Celtics - in the running for greatest of all time.... this was salad days of Robert Parish and McHale, Danny Ainge.... DJ incredibly underrated all over plus of course incomparable LB

I hated the Pistons teams for dirty play but they were great no doubt about it.

'93 Bulls - in the running for greatest of all time

That 3peat of Shaq was pretty amazing teams. I don't care what anybody says about Robert Horry sagging off in the regular season that guy was incredible. D Fish was amazing and of course Kobe8 was just the spin doctor

'04 Pistons - I'd rank these guys up there, it was brief but they were somethin FIERCE
'11 Mavs played true team basketball. As far as stacked? Opposite of stacked. But they played truest basketball of the last many many years.

I can't rank em except that first one, and I can't say but what you could have 2 or 3 of the Jordan Pippen Bulls teams on there. My only complaint as far as Bulls is that league was awfully watery. Lot of teams in the league that couldn't have beat top-flight college teams right at that time of expansion.

But see the Manu Tony Timmy Dunkin Spurs ain't on here......... man this question is hard for a older guy.......... lololol

Pretty much. I've done a good deal of research on some of the all-time greats from the 50s/60s/70s, but I still feel irresponsible ranking a lot of guys based on my limited exposure. Hell, even though I've watched all the WCF/ECF/Finals from the 80s (thankfully we have YouTube nowadays so this is no longer an inpossiblity), I still feel like I can't aptly dissect players/teams from prior to the early 90s without doing a great disservice to the history of the sport.

EDIT: BTW I'll post my list shortly...I have about 10 teams I'm looking at, trying to parse through them.

I think they are going to dominate in the 2nd half of the season and playoffs. I'm pretty sure they're totally coasting as it stands right now.

Yes, they don't have a dominant center, but neither did the Bulls of the 90's and that was an era when there was QUALITY centers. That's pretty much one of the only holes within their team.

The 2013 Heat, obviously it's a bold statement, but I'm pretty sure they will end up one of the best teams that I've ever seen.

I disagree completely. Miracle 2010-2011 Dallas won that series and youve got them listed as one of the greatest of all time. Dallas had what miracle comeback in game 3 or 4? Anyway, I think the Heat are gonna be like Chicago in the 90s, nobody beating those boys.
Anyway thats my 2 cents on that as if anyone gives a damn.
5 best Teams is tough, probably any of Jordans, Magic/Kareems and Birds teams take your pick. Wasnt old enough to see Wilt/Goodrich/West but my father said those were some of the best Lakers teams of all time.

Who you got?

I'll go by chronological order:

1993 Bulls. They had nerves of steel. Didn't matter if they were down 0-2 in the playoffs (60-win Knicks). Or if they were facing the '93 MVP with homecourt advantage and his proclamations of destiny.

1995 Rockets. Not once did they have homecourt advantage. Didn't matter. After winning in 1994, the Rockets seemed hungrier than ever. Down in the first two series, rallied to win them. Destroyed the 1995 MVP in the West conference finals. Swept heavily favorites in the Finals. Although it was mostly a one-man wrecking crew, Drexler and others stepped up in the clutch many, many times. Elie's kiss of death. Kenny Smith's record 7 threes in Game 1 of the Finals.

1996 Bulls. Probably the greatest of them all. The only time I ever saw them struggle was after being up 3-0 in the Finals over the best Seattle Sonics team ever. Their toughest enemy was boredom. Dennis Rodman's relentless rebounding and goading of goons was friggin' hilarious. :oldlol:

2001 Lakers. Shaq at his absolute prime, and Kobe just beginning his. Nobody could even compete, much less beat them, with the sole exception of a 48-point explosion by the 2001 MVP.

Can't go with any of the Spurs teams, except probably 2005, but they got pushed to the distance by the powerful defending champions, and the 2007 edition bullied a weak sister in the Cavaliers. 2008 Celtics were dominant during the season, but struggled badly in the playoffs, got pushed 7 games twice by meh teams. 2012 Heat was good, but they weren't fully healthy, and you didn't believe in them until Lebron's 45 point detonation in Game 6 of the Eastern conference finals.

'92 Bulls

'95 Rockets

'97 Bulls - Just as dominant but much healthier than the '96 team which was really banged up in the later stretches of the regular season and the playoffs.

'05 Spurs - Complete and balanced team on both ends. This was truly the first West champion of the 2000's to face great competition and get tested during an entire playoff run. Let's face it, the 3peat Lakers were getting cupcakes in the Finals. The first time they ran into a real team they folded like a cheap lawn chair.

Honorable mention :
'11 Mavs - Based on the competition they faced from beginning to end they impressed me more than any champion since '05. Taking out the Thunder, Lakers and Heat in one playoff run is no joke.

Updated my picks from before...

In for sure:

*96 Bulls
*01 Lakers
*08 Celtics

Top two candidates to make it into my top 5:

92 Bulls
95 Rockets excellent team

Teams from above (haven't ruled any out yet, but they all have various issues):

97 Bulls Rodman got a little complacent, and didn't rebound as well in the playoffs, but I still might put them in
99 Spurs/03 Spurs have to decide if a near-GOAT level performance from Timmy, the addition of Parker+Manu+Bowen is worth the decline from the Admiral; put a younger DRob on the 03 team and they're up there with the 3 definites I listed
04 Pistons would be in my top 5 for sure, but Sheed got there late in the season
09 Lakers not that the Magic were a bad team (best defense in the league), but they might make my top 5 if they beat the Celtics this season (the next year both Boston/LA were worse IMO)

Hmm.

I watched the 98 Bulls, and even went to one of their games, but I was very young at the time, and wasn't really a Bulls fan. I didn't really get into basketball until late 2000. I would toss in the 98 Bulls in there anyway since they were one of hte best, but old.

98 Bulls-I wasn't really a Bulls fan, and I was young, but even though they were old and crippled, they were basically the flagship of the saying "defense win games" team. They always find a way to pull it through.

01 Lakers- Sucky bench, but with the combination of Shaq and Kobe, plus role players who knew their roles, they were one of the best teams that I ever seen. Afro Kobe was also more entertaining.

02 Kings- One of the best teams to never win a title. Very fun team. Great offense, good defense.

05 Spurs- I hate the Spurs, but they were a great team. Balance offensively, great defensively. Duncan, as always in the playoffs, was great. Ginobili played awesome, and Horry basically did his usual awesome clutch shots against the Pistons.

04 Pistons- I hate this team, but post Sheed they were great. I didn't think they could even reach the Finals, let alone win it.

My honorable mention/favorite teams:

98 Lakers- They had better talent, better bench, and a better starting lineup than threepeat 00s Lakers. And they were much more fun to watch. They were just immature and didn't have the proper direction.

04-05 Heat- This Heat team to me might've been the best Heat team of all time. Even though ppl would look at the 12 or 06 because they win the championship, I think this Heat was better than the 06 Heat team, which looked awkward offensively at times, and not as good defensively and they had a better balance. I think they are better than the 12 Heat team as well, but they had to deal with injuries. Probably the 11 Heat team was on par with the 04-05 Heat team come playoffs, but LeBron didn't play to his caliber in the 11 Finals.

08-09 Laker team: They had talent, great passing skills, and they look fluent on offense. The reason why the 09-10 Laker team isn't here is because Artest didn't fit well with the triangle as Ariza did, and they Gasol and Kobe were more efficient that year.
