View Full Version : The 10 year anniversary of the "changing of the gaurd" game Kobe 42pts in 1 half

- In a little over 3 months it will be the 10 year anniversary of the Epic Changing of the gaurd game...I thought in preperation for the event we look back at that special night.

- Kobe Bryant with another game for the ages, dropping 42 points in the first half....vs Michael Jordans Wizards.

- points of interest, 30 points in a little over 17 minutes......Jordan starting out good until Kobe explodes sending MJ to the bench in utter disbelief. ( even he never saw this type of offensive game before)

- Stu Lance begging Kobe to - " STOP!...don't send MJ outta the staple center like this!"

- Stu lance once again screaming at Jordan and Doug Collins to " call a timeout...or call the fire marshal"

- Jordan screaming at Jerry Stackhouse to Switch on Kobe.....

- maybe if the game was closer...Kobe would have not ended with 55 points.....most likely 84 - 90pts

2002 - 2003 Kobe the best player once agin in the world.....it wasn't even close.

That was a fantastic game and I remember watching it.

There's another good video floating around where "Like Mike" is playing while MJ was making his shots and it comes to a halting screech....and Kobe just took off.

I will try to find it but I think a lot of MJ fans got that video deleted.

Who knew that the guard would change so soon after. Less than 6 years later, and LeBron was the best the league had to offer.

2003 HGH Kobe ... for my money the best version of him as a player, ever.

Elite defense, added the 3 ball to his arsenal, strongest, quickest, most explosive version of Kobe.

He could just as easily take it the rim and finish with a thunderous dunk, as he could nail a 30 footer. This was Kobe before all the knee injuries.

True.

It's difficult to pick. 2008 would be his best on the account of leadership and maturity.

2003 on an individual level is probably his best season.

- Jordan s fortunate he played the watered down 90's vs 6'2" John (rocery bagger) Starks...and Craig Ehlo..

- 39 year old Jordan (the same age as Grant Hill and Jason Kidd) after taking multiple years off to rest throughout his career could never hang with 24year old Kobe....as seen in the video...

but heck...Jordan couldnt even guard teenage Kobe either..so your point is moot.

Jordan wouldn't have been nearly as dominant if Len Bias got to play in the league, or if Penny and Grant hill weren't injury plagued

MJ dominated a weak era of midget white guards

an adolescent Kobe lit up MJ so bad that Phil sat Kobe cause he felt sorry for his former player.

- With the League adding 6 teams between te lat 80's and early 90's.....without the developed international talent we have today....

- It simply watere down the league for the majority of the early - mid 90's.

- Too add all the highschool players and lackof international talent....90's basketball was A) Horrible to watch with hackball poor shooting everywhere ...and B) Bird , Dr.J and Magic all said what I'm saying now.....t league was watered down with no great teams.

Bias definitely would've been to MJ what LeBron is to Kobe. Reggie Lewis would've been to MJ what Tmac was to Kobe, too. Just didn't happen. Tragic.

90's MJ / Pip Chicago Bulls v.s. 90's Bias / Lewis Boston Celtics would've been something to behold in a seven game series.

Oh, and Penny and Hill didn't get plagued w/ injuries until MJ was done. So don't be making up stuff to support your Kobe kock sucking agenda.

MJ dominated and sodomized on national tv in the Finals, the next best player at his position (Drexler) who was basically to MJ what Wade is to Kobe.

Drexler was still quite the player. To be fair, Wade can dribble, but Clyde could shoot and board better.

LOL dude retired when Penny was a rookie. SMH @ "breaking out" as if to avoid him. Competition against Penny and Hill is one of the reasons he was motivated to come back.

MJ faced Penny in '95, '96, and '97 ... Penny's best years pre injury and still out played him. The fukk are you smoking, kid ?

Swept dat ass in '96, with a prime Shaq too.

MJ is better at both. Career 30 ppg average, to Kobe's 25 ppg average? 5 ppg is a whopping difference. I think Kobe in his prime was a more explosive scorer when hot, given he'd chuck insane amount of 3 balls. But as a consistent scorer, MJ is easily better. Plus, he was the superior playoff / Finals scorer, when the game is slower and more tightly defended. But we was talking about Alpha, not your opinion.

Fortunate? He probably cries himself to sleep not being able to prove once and for all who was the best in the end. Kobe main goal is to make everyone think he was the best and to be a legend in the game. Is just that he lived in MJ shadow his whole career. MJ was the best no doubt about that, but Kobe is not a scrub at all.

I think in a 1 on 1 it would be interesting to see who would win in the end.

Too bad Kobe has played 114 more games than Jordan is still not even close to him in any statistical category.

Jordan = 1072 career games
Kobe = 1186 games

MJ = 30.1 PPG, .497 FG%, 893 blocks, 2514 steals, 5633 assists, 6,672 rebounds, 32,292 points.

KB = 25.5 PPG, .454 FG%, 599 blocks, 1762 steals, 5542 assists, 6,272 rebounds, 30,222 points.

6 rings / 6 FMVP, 10 scoring titles (vs 2), 5 MVP's (vs 1), DPOY, Collegiate national champion, 4 gold medals.

All done without a dominant big man either.:oldlol::lol:banana:

MJ>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Kobe.

:facepalm y don't we average in Jordan's stats from when he was 17 and 18 too

or should Kobe be penalized for being more developed than Jordan at a younger age

If a 24 year old player in his sixth year in the league can't out perform a 40 year old player a shell of his former self, well I don't know what to say to you. ...congrats, I guess.

Prime MJ>prime Kobe and it's not close.

based on what?....not history.

- teenage Kobe barely playing 20 minutes was playing great agianst prime MJ....97' - 98' Jordan couldn't even really slow down highschool Kobe at all...

- pre prime Kobe dropped a double Nickel on Jordan in MJ's 15th season.....and considering MJ took 1 1/2 years off in the middle of his career...and another 2 years off before 02' season......MJ's Game age was around 34 - 35.......Just look at MJ dropping 40 points in 02' and 03'.....he was still playing good.

- Prime Kobe would sh!t on Prime MJ....Kobe's game was far more well roundd then Jordan's was.....Jordan was better finisher...Kobe was better at everthing else.

- making Jordan cry on the bench.......deal wit it.

MJ was just shook beyond belief, shedding tears on the bench with his head held low staring at his shoes in disgrace.

It was Kobe destroying him in the all star game (kobe swatted the shit out of MJ on national TV) that directly lead to MJ's retirement a few months later.

MJ is usually #1 or at the very least in the top 2 spots in 99% of posters here. I never see Kobe at #1 and if he is, everyone else laughs at that poster.

Kobe is a great player, I've never said he wasn't but he is by most accounts at around the 7-10 spot range. Only you guys would put Kobe ahead of MJ in troll threads like these but we know you guys are just being trolls.

Currently leading the most stacked team in the league to a sub 500 record at the same age that Jordan was winning Finals MVPs and leading his team to record setting seasons. That overrated piece of sh*t can't even hold a candle to peers like Tim Duncan and Shaq let alone Jordan. Got swept in 2011 despite being the overwhelming favorites over the Mavericks. Single-handedly choked his team out of the 2012 playoffs against OKC. Chucked his team out of the 2004 Finals. Quit on his team in Game 7 in 2006. Record setting loss(40 points ) in Game 6 of 2008 as well as choking a 24 point lead at home in that same series. Bailed out by Pau Gasol and Ron Artest after disappearing in Game 7 of the 2010 Finals. Got carried to his first 3 rings riding arguably the most dominant force in NBA history. Top 10 player my @$$.

Jordan looked pathetic.. You can almost see tears in his eyes.. Maybe Jordan wish he didnt played this game and return from retirement the 2nd time around.. This game was the most embarrassing moment in Jordan NBA career.. This game alone will put most people in doubt of him as the GOAT..

If people watched the entire game seriously, you can see Jordan was trying his best and almost playing the best defense in his career that time and Kobe still score 55 pts in his face easily.. Even tho I'm a Kobe fan (for those who didnt know), I still feel pity for MJ and wish Kobe didn't embarrassed him like this.. This game will show people who is the more superior player among these two legend and Kobe came up the better player by far..

It quite sad to think that this was only Jordan 14th season..

I doubt most or if any Raptor fans are mad at all these days about 81.

:confusedshrug:

My interactions with raptorsfandr07 is that he doesn't like Kobe and hates the overrating of the guy, but he does give him respect. Correlation does not imply causation... 81 points has nothing with his dislike of the guy. Not that I necessarily agree with certain statements like Kobe having the most stacked team this year (on paper, it sure did... it's certainly not right now and that's obvious) and not able to 3 peat, as if 2 peating is some failure..

People dislike or hate Kobe Bryant. That's something your going to have to live with, bro.

Right. A Bleacher Report fan poll and your opinion.

That doesn't prove "90% of the basketball fanbase ranks Kobe #4-#7 all-time."

But good try.

- NO.....a fan report based on a TNT report..

But, Kobe himself isn't "the greatest winner of all time" nor the "greatest scorer", "greatest defender", "greatest passer" or "greatest shooter".

Why are you changing your criteria? You were talking about polls right? Jordan owns Kobe in GOAT polls. Sorry, kiddo.

Nah. Alpha is hilarious. He purposely tries to look stupid with his grammar, quirks, and quips.

You can tell he's actually pretty smart, just playing dumb sometimes. In Kobe or the Lakers case, he's just a fan. So agenda is justifiable in his eyes.

I think he's one of the more entertaining people on these boards. He knows deep down that MJ is better.

- You know whats most :lol ???....people actually justify this game with thier thought out rebutles.....

- Kobe had a GawdBE game......so what?.....it happened against old MJ.....so what?

- I seen many payers play amazing games againt Jordan's Bull's.....no one ever post walls of text about MJ's water shot knees ....

- and the best part is....I never said Kobe was better then Jordan.....:lol I said #5 - #7..and yet they still attack me:confusedshrug:

- what criteria??...I said he was voted as player of the decade and most people view him #5 - #7....that sounds like majority opinion to me...

- someone said he's barely top 10??....that is what I was conversing about....

- If #5 - #7 is no where near MJ....then so be it......I personally think Kobe is a lock Top 3 player alltime when he retires(easily with the alltime scorer rank).....and after watching both his and MJ's whole careers I think they very close....as players and with thier resume's.

It wasn't a TNT report. The writer wrote the article TNT was getting ready to name their All-Decade team and Player of the Decade. He was making his argument as to why Kobe was the player of the decade. And the TNT thing was a fan vote, when Kobe was coming off a championship. If that doesn't skew a fan poll, then I don't know what would.

Not saying Kobe didn't deserve, at the very least, to be in the discussion for player of the decade, he does; I'm just pointing out how that article tells me nothing. TNT does not equal 90% of the NBA fanbase.

I seriously doubt Kobe was overwhelmingly the best player of the 2000s where Shaq, Duncan and LBJ beasted. Kobe was great but not head and shoulders above those players.

I would say that LBJ has been better than Bryant from 2006 to present but that's my opinion, you're welcomed to disagree with it. If you like scoring over everything else, then KB is for you, if you like all around game, that's LBJ hands down...and since you Kobe fans love pointing out that Bryant beat an old ass Jordan and his Wizards and thus he is greater than Jordan:facepalm , using that same criterea, LBJ merks Kobe's team, he's beaten him regularly and both were in their prime. LBJ>Bryant...according to your standards.

at least be consistent, that's probably too much to ask of Kobe dickriders.:oldlol:

I can't wait for Kobe to retire so Kobe haters can bring up whicever scrub outscored him in his last game and say "he made Kobe retire". Then we can link back to this thread and see ZERO EXCUSES from Kobe fans because they pick and choose their moments to defend their hero.

The same way Kobe picks and chooses his moments to defend anyone in the NBA right now (see: Miles, CJ).

No prob.

I mean it's all hyperbole, I know Laker / Kobe fans want to use it as the one leg to stand up on in terms of arguments v.s. Jordan where virtually everything else is in Mike's favor.

We all know MJ was 40 on no knees, last legs and Kobe was half his age, in his prime guarded by Stackhouse and Hughes (a good defender) that game. And yes he went off ... impressive too. Absolutely torched those two shooting guards.

It didn't retire MJ, MJ wasn't shook, and he wasn't crying. But you guys entertain me. MJ didn't guard him for a single possession of that game, let alone a majority of the points. MJ was heavier and slower in 2002 and 2003. Primarily playing SF through out his tenure on the Wiz, and that game he guarded Rick Fox.

If there was ANYONE I'd want someone saying dropped 55 on Jordan, it being Kobe Bryant is more than respectable. In fact it's ideal considering he passed the mantle of best SG to him, and MJ was obviously Kobe's favorite player. In Kobe, we're talking about when on fire, the most explosive scorer of all time due to mind set + skill. 2nd best SG of all-time, and top ten player all-time.

No shame in that AT ALL. I'm sure if MJ was 23 - 33 years of age in his prime, he would have happily tried to slow down Kobe's tear. But the guy was officially "over the hill" by this game.

It's not like MJ had 60 dropped on him by Gilbert Arenas as a 29 year old in his prime or anything ...

:P

Jordan was Mad and started to tear up.....no denying it.

- and Jordan had Nique drop 57 on him......preceeded by a 42 point merking preceeded by 2 29 - 30 point games in a row....

Jordan couldn't even slow down Nique ( but who could?)......Kobe at least held Gil in check most of the time.....

Nique droppin 57 on prime MJ......Kobe could at least get 70.

Alpha, you are amusing, I'll give you that.

Seriously though, Kobe is an all time great, I have never said otherwise, it's just the overrating that gets tired. If Kobe goes on to have a great season stat wise like he's having right now and follow it up with a few more solid seasons (also needs to lead his stacked team to over .500 records, but that's another argument), we could see KB near the top 5 GOAT status. Longetivity has it's merits, playing at a high level for so long shouldn't be overlooked, that's an arguement the pro KAJ as GOAT use, why not for Kobe?

That dropping 70 on prime MJ is just speculation, has as much merit as me saying MJ would drop 70 on a prime Kobe.
