Christopher Waltz was phenomenal in Django and Inglorious Bastards, he's probably my number 1.
DDL has been one of my favorites ever. Haven't seen Lincoln yet, but I'll keep him in my top 3 anyways.
Joseph Gordon Levitt has been on a tear lately, posting solid performances in TKDR, Looper and Inception, so I'll put him at 3.

I considered Waltz and JGL myself for my list. I passed on Waltz because he has only been phenomenal in 2 movies that I have seen (and both are QT movies). JGL is probably #4 for me right now. I also gave Bale and Tom Hardy some consideration (ironic that 3 of my honorary mention guys are in DKR which I really disliked). Gosling was another I considered.

My only criticism of Daniel Day-Lewis is that he has done so few films. Why?

Since 2002 he has been in 5 films (7 since 1996). He turns in solid performances but his resume is not extensive. DiCaprio on the other hand has done 13 films since 02. I don't know if that is a knock on him or not?

None the less, the guy is brilliant. DiCaprio has also pushed his way to the top too. Not sure who I would put in third spot though.

As far as middle aged actors go, honorable mentions to Hardy, Penn and JGL. Then you have the old guys like DDD, Bardem and such. One of my favorites Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen, both need to do some more movies.

I read that he makes shoes when he's not acting. Must be awesome to be able to pick and choose whenever you can work, even if it's 5 years, 10 years later.

Seriously? :oldlol: That is so random, no one would ever guess that. I assumed he might do Broadway or directing or writing or something.

Even from the Batman trilogy, I like Oldman's performances better. It certainly isn't a crime to list him outside the top 3 current top 3 actors. My favorite performance of Bale's was American Psycho, but I can't base my current opinion on a movie that old if we're talking current top 3.

Agreed. I think he is a good actor with great film selection and dedication to the craft. But he seems to be lacking something. I like his films but apart from American Psycho and Batman I don't remember much about his performances (and I remember him for Batman, but not Bruce Wayne). Even in The Machinist and the Fighter I don't remember much.

Although I might watch The Fighter again now, I've only seen it once.

This is the reason Bale is not in my top 3. He may be one of my 3 favorite all time, but not current. His performance in the last 2 Batman movies are the worst of his career. I can't think of any great performances of his in the last couple of years outside of The Fighter (which was a great performance though).

I read somewhere that DDL takes time between films so as not to overexpose himself. I read that Marlon Brando had told him that "an actor has only so many faces" and to not make too many movies.

It makes sense, and I think its a part of what makes him so believable in all his roles.

Maybe, but versatility paired with great acting is what make a "great" actor.

Denzel is great at acting, but he is not versatile and that is why I do not believe he should be put on people's lists of top current actors.

maybe not versatile in choosing his films, as they're mostly action flicks that have a certain style, a great one at that.
But he's definitely a versatile actor, he shows a lot of different emotions in those movies, going from a ghost faced killer to a man that is broken down emotionally.
Yeah, he doesn't tend to choose happy roles or something like that, but why does that really matter?
Michael Caine has done one role for the last 10 years in every movie he's in. And he's so damn great I put him on top of my list.
Just look at this scene in a very great and powerful movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsBK3gyMFcw

It's hard to narrow it to just 3;

The names that automatically came to mind though:

Gordon Levitt
Matthew McConaughey
Leo DiCaprio
Tom Hardy
Mads Mikkelson
Christoph Waltz

I'm not naming guys like DDL; I'm strictly listing actors that have been absolutely killing it in the past 5 years. I don't think there are better actors right now than those six.

If I had to choose just three I'd say

1) Mikkelson
2) Waltz
3) McConaughey

But I hate doing this because I absolutely love Hardy, Leo & Levitt's performances recently.

I mean Leo's scene in The Wolf of Wall Street trying to get back into his white ferrari after taking the drug? Absolutely one of the greatest acting scenes I have ever seen.

GL has been absolutely killing it as of late. He's quickly becoming one of my absolute favorites. Loved him in Looper. I laughed at first because I thought the role just didn't fit his character or looks; but he surprisingly killed that role. If someone said he was the best actor right now, I wouldn't even have an argument against that.

Tom Hardy; well he's been putting out a lot of films and has consistently been the best actor in them. My favorite performance of his is easily "Warrior" [2011]. I can sense the hatred in his eyes throughout the movie, he played it brilliant. He was terrific in Mad Max, The Dark Knight Rises, Lawless and even his latest movie [Legend].

Spectacular actor, hope he gets the next James Bond role.

But honestly, there hasn't been a better A list actor than Waltz in the last 5 years. Mikkelson is in a league of his own and if anyone watched his foreign roles, they'd know why. I think he might even be better than DDL to be honest.

If you haven't seen The Hunt yet, I suggest you go watch it.
He was also in Casino Royale, as La Chiffre.

Matthew has always been super underrated. It wasn't until the last 5-8 years where he started getting prominent roles in movies, and he's arguably been the absolute best in them. I don't even need to listen any of his recent movies. He's been consistently great in all of them. Even the small role he had in The Wolf of Wall Street, he managed to outshine Leo himself on screen.

To me those are the Elite Six right now.
I also think Jeremy Renner is close behind.

Denzel in Flight was fantastic
Denzel in Man on Fire was excellent as well

I feel like all those characters are very different.

The courtroom scene from Flight was one of my favorite scenes. Full of emotion. I mean, you really feel like he's sorry, and when he's speaking at the prison, it's almost like he's been there before.
