The deal will sell the Kings for approximately $500 million, with the Seattle group seeking relocation to Key Arena for the 2013-'14 season.

The Maloofs are finalizing an agreement to sell the Sacramento Kings to the Hansen-Ballmer led Seattle group, sources tell Yahoo! Sports.

Plan is to play at Key Arena in Seattle for two seasons before moving to the new Seattle arena.

As someone who has been a Kings fan since they arrived in Sac but currently a Seattle area resident this is a day of very mixed emotions.

I would prefer the team stay in Sac but if they are moving anywhere then this is great.

Like I want to wear all black but go out and celebrate.

I hope it doesn't happen though.

The Sacramento Kings denied a rumor that the team was close to being sold to a Seattle group planning to build an arena and lure a squad.

"That rumor is inaccurate," said a Kings official, who declined to be named.

"If we had something to announce, we'd announce it," Kings spokesperson Eric Rose added.

The Twittersphere exploded earlier today with the rumor, launched by a tweet from a food blogger who said the the Kings owners had sold the team a group in Seattle that plans to build an arena and lure a team.

The blogger, Daina Falk, the daughter of sports agent David Falk, did not cite any source, and subsequently erased her tweet.

David Falk told The Bee he wasn't the source for his daughter's tweet and has already placed a call to Kings co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof "to apologize for any inconvenience" the rumor caused the team.

"I'm a big fan of the Maloofs," he said.

Falk, who represented NBA legend Michael Jordan, said he checked with his own sources around the league and concluded the rumor is false.

Kings spokesman Eric Rose reiterated the team's stance that it will not comment about rumors from other cities. "If we had something to announce, we'd announce it," he said.

I think Cousins is vastly overrated, but everyone on the Kings should be available but him. Seattle is going to need someone to market the team around. Even if fans are probably so happy to have a team back it would matter who the hell is on the court.

Not a fan of the Sonics [although I am a fan of a city who has lost their team], but I truly believe there is a difference in a city who has supported a team losing it to a smaller city that just happens to be the owners home-town and whats happening here.

I feel bad for the Kings fans I talk to on Twitter just BSing basketball, but it's better seeing a team in Seattle than seeing a team in Anaheim or Virginia Beach. The Maloofs are the biggest joke owners in the NBA though after this.

Just wish there was a way they could put Seattle back in the Northwest division with Portland and Utah, probably not happening now with the way it's structured...

First game for the Sonics should be at home against the OKC Thunder at KeyArena. :oldlol:

I think a team in seattle is better than sacramento. But the same thing will happen...Payton and Kemp pleaded them to not move because they would have no place to hang their jerseys in the rafters and keep their legacy alive. If this happens, Chris Webber and Bibby and/or WhiteChocolate will not have a place to hang their jerseys.

I don't think the NBA is going to separate Utah/Denver. I mean as it is you don't have to change anything with a move to Seattle, but it would be nice to move OKC out of the Northwest (since, you know, they're almost in the center of the country).

well, I've always been a GSW fan, even though I've lived close to/in Sacramento my whole life. But I loved having the NBA in my hometown and I've always supported the Kings as I knew it was good for the city and for my own personal pleasure! Sucks to see this happen, if true. Happy for Seattle, they do deserve a team. But so does Sac. Specifically a team w/ good ownership.

except it wasn't the fans. Revenue's never been the problem - the Maloofs get that from their casinos. It was the Maloofs and their desire for some new West Coast basketball Mecca. They wanted a new arena b/c Arco/Power Balance/Sleep Train is a POS.

Even if the Kings sold out every game, the Maloofs would still want to get a new arena. And a new arena was/is near impossible to get done in Sac.

That's not true. A new arena was/is near impossible to get done anywhere with the terms the Maloofs want. Sac had/has a deal brokered by the NBA with AIG all ready to go. You know, the one the Maloofs "tentatively" agreed to and then backed out on?

The Maloofs simply don't have a dime to contribute and are looking for the biggest payday they can. It has nothing to do with fan support or inability to get an arena done.

ahh, yeah forgot they sold their shares in their casino. But wasn't that only just over a year ago? New arena talks have been going on for more than a few years now. I think we can agree that the new arena (or lackthereof) was the deal-maker/breaker. Regardless if every home game sold out.

Maybe Seattle wants George Karl back.. :D

I'm very excited for Seattle. I think that they got screwed out of the Sonics. I'm also hoping that they can return to their winning ways. Hiopefully the larger Seattle market can bring in a big name or two for the team.

Are they gonna be the Supersoncis again?

I feel bad for Chuck more and more this season:

The coach that brought him in is gone, and thanks to a tumultuous season last year so is his role... now he's a forgotten player.

But at the very least he is close to family. And he's getting paid.

Now he's going to be moved one way or another.

But he still gets paid...

As a Sonics fan, I would love nothing more than to have the Sonics back in the NBA. Seeing this thread got me all pumped up. But I aint getting my big boy pants all excited yet until I see an official news report stating that a deal has been reached and the Sonics are indeed heading back to Seattle. The Maloofa might back out of a deal, even at $500 million:confusedshrug: So I am holding off my excitement until I get an official word.

Not too far off. California has 11.91% of the US population, which translates to 3.573 teams in a 30-team league. So either 3 or 4 is fine, if you're trying to be representative of the # of people living in the state.

FWIW Texas would be 2.52 teams, which means 2 or 3 works.

California has 12,000,000 more people than Texas. Teams in a state is a really poor example. If the state of california were along the east coast there would be like 10 teams in the same state.

they should name it the Seattle Nomads.

"The Kings trace their origins to a local semi-professional team based in Rochester, New York in the early 1920s, making them one of the oldest basketball clubs still in existence. The team joined the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1945 as the Rochester Royals. The Royals defected to the NBL's rival, the Basketball Association of America, in 1948. In 1949, as a result of that year's merger between the NBL and BAA, the Royals became members of the newly formed NBA. Though the Royals were often successful on the court, they had trouble turning a profit in the comparatively small market of Rochester, and relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1957, becoming the Cincinnati Royals. In 1972, the team relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, initially splitting its games between Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska, and taking up the name Kansas City Kings. The team again failed to find success in its market, and moved to Sacramento in 1985.

The team won the NBL championship in 1946 and the NBA championship in 1951. Since 1945, the franchise has won one conference championship and five division championships."

As long as they find a decent GM/Owner/Coach I don't give a shit where they go the product and some of the player they have drafted/played is a straight out disgrace. Build a proper team surrond Cousins/Evans with players who actually fit them and lets see what happends.

Pretty cool Seattle is back...2 hour drive to catch games!

Sucks because during the last Sonics' season I made contact with someone from the camera/tv crew and he was giving me courtside tickets...$200/pair. (I know they sucked but still...)

I live a short drive from Arco/Power Balance and have been fortunate to have watched a lot of NBA basketball there in the 11 years since I moved to Sacramento.

I never was or even became a Kings fan but always had a good time at Arco, in no small part due to the brilliant customer service from the ushers - its these guys and gals I feel bad for, in these tough economic times losing 41 work days is gonna surely cause financial hardship.

Looking at the glass being half full I'd been planning to follow the NHL anyway so I guess this move just ensures I will be a frequent visitor to HP Pavilion which should be a lot of fun itself.

if memory serves me right, that offer was around $300m. At the time, the Maloofs said they didn't want to sell/wanted to still own an NBA franchise and wanted to try to get the new arena deal done first. After the new arena fallout and this new record offer, I guess they felt they couldn't turn it down.

Cynics will say they were holding out for a bigger payday, but I believe the Maloofs would've accepted that (basically free) arena deal to stay in Sac.

So, when your city "steals" another team you hope the deal happens. However, when it happened to your team it was criminal. Thanks for proving my point and showing what a hypocritical troll you are. You have zero credibility on here. :facepalm

When Durant and Westbrook get old and start sucking, it is very likely that OKC'S fanbase will turn their back on the team like how Sactown did to the Kings when Webber, Divac, and Peja descended...

When that happens, maybe the Thunder can relocate to Sactown... or even Vancouver...

Having three teams in the PacWest again would be sweet...

I'm confused as to how any of this talk of cities/fans "stealing" teams is even relevant. Its not. Teams aren't "stolen" they are either a) relocated or b) sold by their owners with the blessing of David Stern and the rest of the NBA owners. These decisions are made by businessmen with a financial stake in the team not by fans who have an emotional investment.

That said any "Bring back our Sonics" activists will be mighty hypocritical if they welcome this latest incarnation of the Sonics with open arms given how strongly they felt screwed over by Clay Bennett and Stern.

You clearly have no grasp of how Seattle lost the Supersonics.

By all means enlighten me.

I was looking back at this Kings timeline here produced by the local newspaper (Sac Bee). I still have not had it adequately explained to me why the Maloofs were on board with the City council plan (in fact they pushed it hard) on March 6 but pulled the plug on it in April. http://www.sacbee.com/2013/01/09/5103458/timeline-sacramento-kings-1985.html#storylink=cpy

March 6, 2012: By a 7-2 vote, the Sacramento City Council approves the financing plan for a downtown sports arena now costing $391 million.

March 29, 2012: The NBA offers to advance initial payments after the Maloofs balk at paying $3.26 million to help launch arena pre-development work.

April 13, 2012: The Maloofs pull out of a plan to finance a $391 million sports and entertainment complex, suggesting instead that city officials help them renovate Power Balance Pavilion in North Natomas.

And you probably have no idea what's been going on in SAC.

With that said I found this googling:

April 15th 2012

INTERVIEWER: So what's different a year later? A lot of people still suspect your plan is to spend next season in Sacramento and then file for relocation in March.

JOE MALOOF: "That's not true, that's not true. I swear that is not going to happen. I don't care what rumors are out there. It's our team. We're not selling, and we're not leaving. Our identity is the Sacramento Kings. That's how we're known".
