This question was just posed to a roundtable of critics on ESPN's sportsnation. The stupidity of that network never ceases, absolutely no journalistic integrity whatsoever.

They're alright, the most interesting ones were Benji, Jordan rides the Bus, and You don't Know bo. Many of the others lack in quality in comparison, still the best thing ESPN has ever done was their Sportscentury series. This still isn't enough to make up for all the idiocy that comes out of that place.

How about ESPN learning "from sources" that ESPN was hiring Ray Lewis and that ESPN could not find a source (at ESPN) to comment? Or Sources told ESPN Deron resigned (he tweeted it out to everyone). Once Mike on WFAN reported a trade wrong (he got a player wrong) and ESPN had the same error 5 minutes later from sources.

Or the time we got Stein to report on a rumored trade we made up.

Only thing I can come up with is they're saying RG3 played injured because he remembers all the shit Cutler took for sitting out? I tried to find a video of it, couldn't pull anything up though. If so, I don't know why Cutler would deserve the blame considering ESPN personalities were the stupid ****s that started most of the mob against him.

ESPN talks as much football and NFL Network.

It keeps it simple stupid. Football is easy to BS about. They spent weeks wondering about Tebow playing. MLB free agency where guys are 100% going to be starters on a new team they cover in 30 seconds.

They keep people interested, which is all that matters.

But I sure as hell miss the days that it was more highlights and less bullshit.

longest running show on american television

Not even close to the longest running show on American television, wouldn't even be in the top 10 or 20. Meet the press is currently the longest running show on American television and it's been on more than 30 years longer than SportsCenter. A show being on for a long time also does not equal quality, SportsCenter was once a fine show, it's devolved into contrived debates and tiresome story lines.

a complete monopoly on sports news television

Again, this does not equal quality. Everyone knows ESPN dominates sports news coverage, that doesn't mean their coverage hasn't been ridiculous over the last decade.

being able to watch skip bayless and stephen a. smith argue with eachother damn near everyday on 1st and 10

If you're actually using the horrendous first take as support of ESPN then you are a moron. First Take is one of the worst shows on television with their hideously contrived debates with Bayless playing the role of contrarian. I can't believe someone would be foolish enough to use this show as praise for the network, let alone actually watch it.

You've just created one of the worst, most idiotic posts I've ever seen, congrats.

You sound more like a shill for ESPN than someone posing a rational, well informed argument. The 30 for 30 series is a good program, not sure what makes you declare one of the best documentary series or what you're comparing it against, but whatever. While it was the idea of Bill Simmons, ESPN has little to do with it. They brought in independent filmmakers to do each story. Once again, first take is utter trash and completely artificial. Pardon the Interruption is the best show on the entire network and even that has deteriorated, as Michael Wilbon has gotten more power inside the network the show has gotten gradually worse. One good show on a colossus also does not override and excuse ESPN's shabby reporting and atrocious coverage. I don't know if you're on their payroll or not, probably not, I'd expect a better, more logical argument.

ESPN is a sports powerhouse, but if you think their journalism and programming is quality and isn't embarrassing most of the time, you're fooling yourself. All ESPN cares about is ratings, even if that means talking about Tim Tebow all of the time.

ESPN has become a joke in the journalism world. They constantly rip off people's stories by citing "sources" and almost always refuse to acknowledge the work of anyone outside of their networks. They also run their company like a dictatorship and treat their employees like shit.

It's really not a coincidence that every time an employee leaves ESPN, they immediately start trashing the place and how it's run.

They've even managed to turn Sportscenter into an absolute unwatchable mess. I never, ever watch ESPN unless it's an sporting event.

SportsCenter is a daily sports news television show, and the flagship program of American cable network ESPN since the network launched on September 6, 1979. Originally broadcast only daily, SportsCenter is now shown up to twelve times a day, replaying the day's scores and highlights from major sporting events, along with commentary, previews and feature stories. The show has aired more than 50,000 unique episodes, more than any other program on American television, and is shot in ESPN's HDTV studio facilities in Bristol, Connecticut and Los Angeles, California.

I saw someone make a TMZ comparison and while I don't think ESPN is on that level, it does seem to be the direction they've been headed for a while.

There was a time, not too long ago, when ESPN seemed to hold professionalism, real news, and accuracy in very high regard. There was still goofiness, but not at the expense of real sports happenings. Something seems awry in that regard these days. It almost feels as if ESPN has made ESPN the number one viewing priority, with sports being their weapon of choice.

For example, Sportscenter's been evolving for some time, but back in the 90's, an episode of Sportscenter would in fact feature anchors with ridiculous catch phrases ("I am the king for as long as that ball shall travel! Bring me your finest meats and cheeses!") but it was all taking place during wall-to-wall sports highlights. There weren't extended anchor segments where the camera zoomed in on Stuart Scott so he could discuss why he felt J.R. Rider's alarm clock wasn't fully functioning correctly while raising concerns as to whether Rider was actually sleeping on the cool side of the pillow.

Basically, I fully understand ESPN stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, but I felt they were at their best when they were based on legitimate news and information. Now, it seems they have fully embraced the "Entertainment" aspect, to perhaps an absurd degree. Yes, I want to know if DeMarcus Cousins was ejected last night, but I don't want to hear multiple hours of back-and-forth banter about it for days on end.

He voted for Bonds and Clemens. That's cool and erases anything i hated about him prior. Interview covers everything from blaming the "clean players" to the embarrassment from clown votes like Sele. I like him a lot after listeining to this.

MLBtv has that show with action from every game, mlbtonight, and there's the highlight show quick pitch. They're doing that right.

If you're watching ESPN for great journalism you're doing it wrong. They do try to seem like they still are doing that but we all know the truth.

But I will not go anywhere else for my highlights on T.V. And shows that are driven by the personality of those in them do have great potential to be very entertaining. Around the Horn is great at times when they have the right collection of people. Sportsnation was awesome when Marcellus Wiley was hosting with Michelle Beadle.

However this can err to. Jim Rome, Jim Rome, oh and uhhh... Jim Rome.

Their main NBA Countdown crew though is fascinating to me. Wilbon knows the game and has the long time writers perspective. Simmons has an interesting take on a lot of stuff in the game, and can bring the advanced stat-nerds perspective. And Magic is the greatest player at a position that we assume requires the most knowledge of the game. But the end result is a mess.
