Just to get to 50 wins, the Lakers have to go 35-11 the rest of the season. And given how the West is going, that might only be enough to sneak in as the 8-seed.

Good luck.

Kyrie's gonna have a field day with that defense.

Also, Tristan Thompson might have a 20-20 night with Dwight, Gasol, Hill out of the lineup.

They need to go 33-13 to win 48 games. If they can have a great stretch of winning 10 out of 12 or something like that, then it's doable. They cannot lose to one bad team at home, no more messing up. But like I said in one of my threads, there is only one thing this team can do to make the playoffs, and that is to trade a package of your useless players that can't play defense and can't make open shots like Gasol, Jamison, and Meeks for young perimeter defenders. Maybe fire D'Antoni too to create a more defense focused team, but it's not the coach in this case, it's the lack of great defenders on this team so just firing D'Antoni won't cut it.

01-13-2013, 12:12 AM
Give up guys it's over. What have you seen about the Lakers this year that makes you think they'll put it together? Mike D'Antoni isn't all of a sudden going to grow a brain, the team isn't going to give consistent effort for 48 minutes and worst of all they're dealing with tons of injuries.

Yeah I agree. Game after game after being torched this team comes back the next game and plays the exact same way. No adjustments are made, no improvements are made. Opponents are getting layups, great looks in the paint, and wide open perimeter jump shots every game.

Why are people saying they need to win x number of games to make the playoffs? That's freaking stupid. They're 5 games back of the 8th spot. They have to win a lot but only more than the 3-4 other teams in that race.

Tall order but not impossible by any standard.

Because we're fans and we can speculate about things like that. The Lakers players and coaches, though, should absolutely approach it like you said. They're five games back of the 8-seed with 46 games to go. In the grand scheme of things, that's nothing. But, as fans, who cares if we say they need 46 or 48 or 50 wins to get in?

A different way to look at it.

Ok Denver, Portland, Houston are 4 or 5 games in the loss column.

Why is Portland winning so much? It doesn't make sense and I love Lillard's game. And I think they have the best record in very close games or something like that. It is possible their gig is up? Lillard hits a rookie wall and bye bye close games? To me they are the most likely to fall off. Unfortunately Aldridge is likely to get snubbed for the allstar game and have something to prove.

Denver doesn't have a reliable leader. Carl is losing touch with his players. But they win too many home games to really fall off hard. They are definitely in.

Houston, they impose their will on teams moreso than even GS, but Harden is everything and he might get tired too. They have less talent than the other teams here and are the most fragile.

Longshot
GS has a brutal next two months and this weird excellent play is just too plain weird. 9 games in the lose column is huge but you see it in the next two months. Problem is the last two months are a lot easier.

One of these guys are going to fall off. But Utah is a killer at home add more drama to the mix.

Verdict is totally based on how long the big guys stay out. Their goal is 50 wins but with good health they are at 46 if they figure it out. The games are too close together now and its harder to make solid adjustments.

If Howard or Gasol play against the Cavs, then maybe we could win, but since I doubt they're gonna play. I expect a loss and Kyrie to score a career high on us.

I'm also expecting the Cavs to score 60+ in the first half...

I've pretty much given up on the season, I'll probably keep watching just for laughing and smh purposes though.

the rest of the schedule for January is

@Toronto
@Chicago
@Memphis
vs Utah
vs OKC
vs New Orleans
@ Phoenix

I think Lakers will lose against Chicago and OKC for sure, but all the other games are up for grabs. so i hope the lakers can at least finish out the month 6-3, assuming losses at Miami, OKC, and Chicago

Really, you couldn't really except the Rockets to do more than MAYBE sneak into the playoffs as an 8-seed, and even that's starting to look less and less likely. I absolutely think, going forward, Houston can not only make the playoffs with Harden as their best player, but maybe even finish top 5 in the West. However, they can't do much better than what they're doing this year with Harden as their best player and Chandler Parsons, Omer Asik, and Jeremy Lin as their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best players.

Portland's bench is just god awful and they're a smallish team in desperate need of a legit center...not J.J. Hickson.

LA will still easily make the playoffs.

They are 17-22 after this loss to Toronto.

So basically just flip that around and what you end up with is what they will have to do in order to make the playoffs...22-17 or so is the pace they will have to go on from here on out to make the playoffs....and that should be pretty easy to do with Kobe, Dwight, Gasol, and Nash as well as Earl Clark having a breakout year and Metta World Peace shooting like it's 2007 again.

The Mavs have now caught up with the Lakers and are playing their best b-ball of the season and have everyone healthy. The Kings are only 1.5 games back and the Hornets (EG back) and last place Suns only 4 and 4.5 games back respectively. It's an understatement to say the Lakers have their work cut out for them especially with some of the teams below them starting to play better.
