Well 7th fastest, but it's obviously still very impressive:

Wednesday will be his 726th regular-season game. Chamberlain needed only 499 games to score 20,000, followed by Jordan (620), Oscar Robertson (671), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (684), Elgin Baylor (711) and Allen Iverson (713). If James gets it done on Wednesday, he'll reach the 20,000 mark one game faster than Shaquille O'Neal did.

He has a point though. Wilts stats are skewed and not comparable to the current era because the game itself was played different back then. I have no doubt that he would still rack up stats today but we wouldnt be seeing him average 50/20, thats for sure.

The peak NBA product didn't start until 1979 / 1980, IMO

Everything before that was the developmental stages. Not that it diminishes those legends, just that the game was very different.

Exactly. You and me, we're always on the same wave length.

Don't forget Isiah too. I hate when people don't include him after Magic / Bird.

Guy would be very comparable to PGs of today. He's a less flopping, tougher, quicker version of current Chris Paul.

I started watching in 1980. I actually agree that players today are "better" than players of the 60s were. In the sense that a 2013 team would beat a 1963 team with ease.

However, that's not the real question here. Everyone has had their own environments they had to score those 20k points in. It wasn't 'easier' for Wilt because he played in the 60s... not oonly his opponents were 60s players but he himself was a 60s player at the time, too. He was much better than all the others were. You may say it's because th league wasn't any good back then... but you can also say the league was just fine, but there was Wilt, who operated on another level (kind of like Bird and Magic and later MJ did in the 80s).

You shouldn't discount past players and records based on the fact that today's players would win a 1-on-1 matchup tomorrow. It's like saying today's soldiers are better than soldiers of the past because we have more advanced technology and more experience.

Kareem played the majority of his career in the 70's. Also I don't recall an older Wilt in the early 70's struggling much vs. him, in fact he seemed to hold his own. I'm pretty sure that great players of any era would be great in other eras.

That is common knowledge. When it comes to stats, wilt cannot be compared to the current era, this is also common knowledge. As I said, I am sure wilt specifically will still rack up stats and play very well in the current era but the same does not apply for all of the other players of the 50's 60's and 70's

He was pointing out the fact that you diminished pre 80's players when Wilt, past his prime, outplayed one of the most dominant post 80's players in a playoff series. And it was one of Kareems best years playing years ever.

Fact is you have to make baskets and Wilt connected like a modern day player. And he was the only one in that time that was consistently doing that. He was the first to break the 30 point per game barrier and to get to 20,000 points he averaged 40ppg for those 7 years. He deserves his glory because nobody has come close to that for one year. You have to be really skilled to achieve that.

Can you even f*cking read? I placed emphasis on the fact that wilt would be one of the players who would be able to beast in the modern era but the point is that the stats do not directly translate. You are a fool if you think he would replicate those stats today. Now stfu.

But he doesn't have to. Wilt has become Wilt for what he did then. Not now. He had to be the best in his era, not this one.

This is true as well but the point being made is that for this exact same reason, the difference in era, one cannot get an accurate picture from a direct statistical comparison to those in this era - 1980s onwards

Talking of physical talent, obviously. However, I'm of the opinion that the mental side of the game is some kind of talent as well. That taken into account, LeBron is not a better player than Kobe. This year he may be, but neither his prime (now) nor his career (so far) is any better than Bryant's prime was or career (so far) is.

Primes are close and dabetable, career not so much.

agreed. raw physical talent wise Lebron's on another level. But the same can be said for Kobe mentally. And even basketball when it comes down to it, is easily as much mental as it is physical.... Could you imagine what Kobe would have done, if gifted with Lebron's natural physique and athleticism? Conversely, give Lebron Kobe's starting tools and I think we'd see a drastic dropoff.

Not to take anything away from LeBron. He's a great player, but could be greater. We'll see if he ever reaches his pinnacle. Congrats on the 20.5.5k

Lebron from 2009 to now = clearly better than kobe ever was. This entire mental aspect of the game is overblown as Kobe has played on better teams his entire career and has had much better opportunities to win. If lebron was on a good team during the 2009 and 2010 season he would have took the chip home and this discussion wouldnt even take place. 2011 choke was due to a change in role and playstyle. Lebron makes the right basketball play far more than kobe does and kobe shoots every time because he has more confidence in his jumpshot. If you look at it statistically bron is actually far more clutch than kobe.

agreed. raw physical talent wise Lebron's on another level.

When it comes to on-court play, bron is actually better than kobe mentally . He is smarter and makes better decisions and takes better shots. Kobe also has good attributes in the sense that he is fearless when it comes to wanting to shoot and he has great work ethic but lbj still has the edge mentally. The main difference between your impression of the two is the fact that kobe was on a team where he could win rings from the get-go.

This

Any superstars given the opportunity to stat pad like him in every game will probably achieve that feat.. Actually theres nothing really impressive in that feat if a statpadding player like LeBrick achieved it..

It's remarkable!

Wade who came in at the same time as James will probably need 2 more seasons to hit the 20K mark and 3 seasons for 5K.
Can't say enough about James durability and productivity. Only thing he is down on Wade is fouls because Wade has almost 2 seasons more. :lebronamazed:

If statpadding means that you'll be as good as Lebron then every team should do it.

If LeBron ends his career with somewhere around 30,000 points, 9,000 rebounds and 9,000 assists it's going to be hard to keep him out of the top 5 conversation.
