Looks like he kept it the left foot the whole time. He only raised the left foot while going for the shot off the right, which is legal.
Great move. Irving is so much fun to watch, even if it is against my team.

I don't think so. I think what he did was a half-spin hop off his right and landed on both feet which then has the option to choose either his right or left foot as the pivot point. He ultimately chooses the left and you could say he took an extra mini step with it to actually get his foot to stick for turning around but it's so little that in real time, no one's going to call that. Beautiful play.

That is a 100% travel, but it's the NBA and for a 20 year old that is a crazy move.

Not a travel. Jumping off non-pivot foot is completely legal.

Yes. Deron Williams made a half-court buzzer beater jumping off his non-pivot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJQzRanF5uc).

From the NBA rulebook:
"g. If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor. If he drops the ball while in the air, he may not be the first to touch the ball."
That was an insane move by Irving. Spin move, killer fake, reverse pivot.

how come we still can't agree on what is and is not a travel when we all watch a lot of bball?

If I did that in a college game when I played that would call that a travel. Maybe the rule is different in the NBA though. Nice move regardless.

Because the NBA made up rules along time ago.

It always amazes me how many people don't actually know what a travel is.
This move, btw, is 100% not a travel, fyi.

I've never liked that rule.
I always considered it a non-travel if your pivot foot and non-pivot foot leave the floor at basically the same time (similar to Irving's clip or Kobe's pivot spin move at MSG). But if your pivot foot obviously comes up first and you're jumping off your non-pivot (like in D-Will's clip) I've always wondered how in the hell that's not considered to be an extra step.

If you did this in a college game it would be a travel every single time, the rule must be different.

You are talking about what was essentially the game-ender. This was a different play... Midway through the 3rd. Watch it in the OP.
And, I'm not sure on that final basket. It was an odd play. But, if a player gets the ball knocked out of his hands, he can retain his dribble. That was a close one, though.
Here are the full game highlights, btw...

It's scary how a 20 year old rookie already has a better post game than 95% of the league.

Anyone who thinks that's travel explain to me how so? Don't think he moved off his pivotal foot once he planted on it.

Not a travel, but also not a high % shot. Reverse pivot, jumper off the glass? Kyrie makes that shot maybe 10% of the time.

Maybe it doesn't count as an extra step because the ball has been released when the pivot foot comes down?

That Irving reverse pivot move is legal. Kobe's done that many times and there's a youtube clip of him doing it one a rookie Wes Matthews in the playoffs.
Watching those highlights it looks like Irving did double dribble. The second time this year that a player has done that to us and gotten away with it. Doesn't matter, kinda glad Portland is losing. We need more lottery talent and I hope this can move us closer to a Hickson trade.
I want to add that what is a travel is when you have a pivot foot and then take a step (picking up the pivot completely) to get an open shot. So many scubs at the rec center think that move is legit. One you have a pivot foot you cannot take one full step and then shoot.

Where does the Cavs getting Kyrie Irving for Mo Williams, Jamario Moon, and one year's payment of Baron Davis' contract rank on the "best front office moves" in recent history?
It needs to be pointed out that really the main thing for the Clippers in that deal was dumping Davis' contract, and it turned out the Cavs didn't even have to pay it off fully. They amnestied him the following season with the new CBA rules in place. So, in retrospect, it was Mo and Jamario for Irving.
Not too shabby, Chris Grant.

That isn't how ISH works. Some forums have an individual thread for each player and all discussion goes in those designated threads. ISH is a more loosely moderated community and, thus, as long as the first couple pages aren't cluttered with redundant discussions, new threads are not frowned upon.
I rarely if ever make threads... But I'm also not going to start deleting every thread just because there may have been something similar discussed last week or even a couple days ago. You have an issue, submit it to Jeff.

I prefer ISH 's stream of consciousness and looseness to more "serious" basketball forums. I feel it makes for a more sincere forum, and i think its easier to locate something in a new thread than sifting through a buttload of pages to find what you are looking for.

And I agree.
It can get out of hand at times, and that is when we start deleting stuff en mass... but for the most part, I try not to be too strict. That takes some of the fun out of it.

It should 100% be a travel. The rule just doesn't make any sense. It's like if you go for a eurostep and then take an extra step (before your second foot comes back down). Obviously a travel right? So how is the Kobe/Kyrie move not a travel?
