What do you guys think? 7-6.5" would be the same wingspan as Alonzo Mourning - does this seem like an accurate calculation based on the method used? Does the method used have too many questionable variables involved to assume any sort of accuracy at all? The image was from a 35-50mm stock source taken from a long distance away from the subject which I've learned helps minimize optical distortion. The only variables I can think that could throw the accuracy would be if the ball is not on the same horizontal plane as Thurmond, or if Thurmond's arms are not sprawled out exactly perpendicular to the photographer.

Surprised to see no comments about how Nate Thurmond would be a poor man's (insert stiff here) in today's league and how he would struggle to make a Euroleague squad. I'll post in this thread just to give you a bump as I cannot confirm or assess your measurement method.

yea u dont know that ball is on the same plane as nateI thought of this, but then if you think about it some more, the ball would have to be on the same plane since the offensive player shot the ball directly over him.

What kind of homo thread is this?

Trying to calculate the dudes wingspan ON A PIC by using the diamter of a ball that isn't even the same length on the pic?

Mind as well just measure the dudes dick while your at it.

Because, of course, measuring a player's wingspan, which is completely relevant to basketball discussion, is the same thing as measuring his *****.

...

*iisn't sure why a player's ***** would even be mentioned in the first place*

Not sure what his wingspan was, but according to Chamberlain, who we know had a 7-8 wingspan, Nate had a higher standing reach than Wilt himself.

Listen at around the 45 second mark...

You might actually be the worst poster on Insidehoops. Worthless post after worthless post. Not even mistakes, just... a fool's play.

Manute Bol's stats is false, you can tell by his body shape, his wingspan/height ratio isn't that big, it's around Kevin Durant's ratio at best, or slightly less. the ones with best wingspan/height usually have long arms, broad shoulders, and relatively short legs for his height, Bol has 1 of the 3, while being really weak in the other 2 categories.
on the other hand, Mark Eaton's wingspan is definitely more than 7'6", most likely more than Bol's wingspan as well.

You could be right about Bol, but I read an in depth multipage spread (SI I believe) article about Eaton where Eaton himself says he's 7-3 and 3/4 inches in stockings and that he posesses a 90 inch armspan that greatly aids his shot blocking. Why would he lie about it? It seems like quite a reasonable measurement to me.

I don't think SI lied about Eaton's wingspan on purpose, but they could make a mistake on the measurement, or take it from words of mouth, which is why it's a very even number(90 inch).
the reason I don't believe his wingspan is only 90 inch is because I've seen varies photos of Mark Eaton, and I've seen varies photos of other players with wingspan around 7'6", there is a huge different, Mark Eaton is someone who has a standing reach around 3m, short neck, very broad shoulders, and great arm length for his body, but underrated because the large torse and thickness of his body make it visually shorter, his arm length is actually close to Manute Bol's, here are a few photos and gifs:

he simply does not have the body shape of someone whose wingspan is approximate the same as his height with shoes.

I'm sorry but eyeballing photographs or gifs means absolutely nothing to me next to very reasonable printed data. Even my Nate Thurmond photograph I won't use as a evidence of anything.

Here's two sources for Mark Eaton 7-6 wingspan:

http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2012/mar/05/howie-stalwick-pac-12-tourney-destined-for-las/?print=1
Former Utah Jazz center Mark Eaton holds the NBA records for blocked shots per game in a season (5.6) and career (3.5). Eaton was a 7-4, 285-pound human glacier with size 17 feet and a 90-inch wingspan.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1068337/
The Mark Eaton of the basketball court conjures up a more alarming image. He stands 7'4", weighs 285 pounds and is a former auto mechanic and reformed loather of basketball who has gone from unclogging fuel lines to gunking up opposing offenses. Eaton does it better than anyone in the NBA.

Unlike most clubs, Utah seldom double-teams and rarely switches. Instead, the Jazz slant the action on the court to Eaton, funneling opponents down the lane and into his 90-inch wingspan, which is anchored by a pair of size 17 feet. "He blocks up the middle like a tree," says Seattle forward Xavier McDaniel.

And FWIW this is the source of Mark Eaton's height w/o shoes:

it's not evidence, it's common sense, I can give you varies reasons that Eaton has a great wingspan, some makes more sense than others, yet the only thing you can provide me is the same source saying his wingspan is 90", used twice in different occasions.
I know Eaton mentioned his height in an interview once, the number looked very realistic compare to his visual appearances, but for anyone who has above average observation skills, I think it is very obvious that Mark Eaton's wingspan is not 7'6".
