Is Dwight Howard really even better than prime Greg Ostertag was?

Greg Ostertag was basically Dwight Howard with more size and better fundamental and man defense. Don't forget Howard is 6'10 while Ostertag was legit 7'2 and played elite defense on the top centers in the west like Hakeem and Robinson for two runs to the finals.

Greg Ostertag had an 8'1 wingspan and could touch the rim without jumping. Dwight Howard's wingspan is 7'6.

What Dwight does looks more spectacular but he has to work harder to do what Ostertag did by just standing in the paint with his arms up.

Howard gets highlight blocks but it's often uncalled goaltends or he just swats it out of bounds.

Ostertag could always be counted on to play tough D and box out on every single possession, Ostertag also set harder screens.

I bet if Ostertag was fed by Stockton like Orlando used to feed Dwight gimme buckets Ostertag could have averaged 18-20 ppg like Dwight used to in Orlando.

Is Dwight even better than Greg Ostertag? Not really, only by reputation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9ajk9JnJtg

Ostertag actually has basic fundamentals, decent footwork and knows how to keep the ball up high and finish pick and rolls. He is a 56% freethrow shooter so has Dwight beat in that department as well.

39 year old Greg Ostertag was recently seen as early as last year schooling young kids in the D-league, he has fundamentals strength and size, his only weakness is conditioning. Can you imagine Dwight trying to play at 39 after his athleticism is gone? He would be useless.

There is a difference between wing span and standing reach. No one has a 10 foot wingspan you ****ing idiot. Also, since when did Dwight have anyone even half as talented as Stockton feeding him in Orlando? I honestly can't decide if your just dumb or bored and which one is more sad.

The problem with Greg Ostertag is there were two of them. One that was terrific and got you 16 points with great positioning. The other got you 0 with two missed dunks.

There's a reason they called him "the Big-Ohhh-NOooo". He was very frustrating offensively. I've never seen a player miss more easy shots than this guy.

Ostertag was a great defender and large enough he could stand up to Shaq. Also very immobile, he was like sticking a tree down near the basket... tough to get around, but you knew the tree wasn't going anywhere.

If Ostertag had reached his potential this would be a debate. But he never did.

The offense was built around Dwight in Orlando and he could only manage 20 ppg.

Jerry Sloan was never dumb enough to build his team around Ostertag but if he wanted to, Ostertag easily could have gotten 20 ppg if the whole team's instructions were to feed him, like how it was on Dwight's team in Orlando.

How is Dwight not a sobering reality that every player in the league doesn't want to play for LA? Who is your next glamour coach gonna be? No PJ and no Riley you guys are ****ed. I think he did actually. People in Utah just expected something more. He was one of the best offensive rebounders and shot blockers in the game. A role player.

You didn't appreciate what you had, Ostertag in 99 did as good a job guarding Shaq as I have ever seen any player play, he was always a top defender in the league, his offense was just bad, but he was still better than Howard at posting up, Howard's only advantage over Ostertag offensively is alleyoops.

Ostertag boxed out every play and played strong and tough and wasn't a mental midget who cracked at every challenge thrown his way like Dwight is.

Stop trying to rewrite history and pretend Ostertag was a useless scrub when he wasn't.

Dwight is overrated trash! A glorified role player who received superstar recognition in Orlando because somebody has to score points on a bad team.

But somehow people will blame Kobe, the only player on the team with a semblance of actual basketball skill, for dropping 29 points on 48% FG while this no-skill scrub who can't shoot from more than 2 feet outside the paint goes 0-4 from the field.

Nash I'll give you. But Gasoft? That Euro scrub 7-footer shoots a lower percentage from the field than Kobe, a 6'6" SG who takes more contested/difficult shots than anyone in the league.

Kobe's help is simply overrated. He's got a tissue-soft has been Euro PF who's still butt hurt over being traded to Houston in the Chris Paul to LA deal before it got vetoed. And then his center is just a hyper-athletic version of Samuel Dalembert, only he doesn't look so athletic anymore.

Kobe should be the one demanding a trade from this shameful and pathetic team. They suck! He deserves to spend his final few years on a team with winners, not junk like Dwight and Pau.

try not to transfer Kobe's pathetic last 4 games FG% onto Dwight.

Kobe has been below average to for a guy who averages 23 FGA with Gasol on the bench.

Dwight is not the main reason for LAL downfall. Kobe is the primary reason. Dwight has been injured the whole year.

Kobe is healthy & his skills are so limited that he cannot shoot good percentage & has pi$$ poor shot selection begging for refs to bail him out.

No, D12 was not shut down last night by Marc Gasol, who played very little in the first half due to early foul trouble.

The human Dwightmare was shut down by none other then Iranian scrub Hamed Haddidi.

If anyone actually watched the game, they would have seen Howard doing fading spin moves trying to get his shot off vs the defensive juggernaut Hamed Haddidi and still failing.

Any smart GM watching Howard must realize he is done. I doubt he will hold any value much longer, Mitch needs to deal him as soon as possible, Lin or Harden+Parsons preferred but I'd be happier with someone like Greg Smith or Biedrins starting at C then this quitting cancerous born loser.

Grizz want to deal Gay or Gasol for cap relief right, let's rape them again and try to get Marc Gasol back in exchange for Dwightmare. His corny christian brand of comedy would be right at home in Memphis.

The whole point of getting rid of Speights and Ellington was to avoid trading one of the core players. Marc Gasol isn't soft like his brother, he's very popular and he will probably be a Grizz for life.. or until he's past his peak.

It might actually be the best thing they did, I was a bit upset they let Mo go but the other two im fine with. But letting all 3 go they opened up consistant mins for DA and a potential star in the making in Tony Wrotten and they will sign a decent player most likely so the downgrade is not that big and could turn into a upgrade.

That would be nice. This trashing Dwight thing is one of the worst schticks on this site (he's not devoid of blame, but trolls are acting like he's a below average player in this league...really????). It's not all about stats though. See, I can understand KG getting in a bit more because he's huge for his team and is a really popular veteran who's been in the league for years(and he plays in a weak ass Eastern Conference as well)... but Dwight Howard is the cancer of his team, off AND on the court. He's a huge hindrance to the Lakers team chemistry, and his terrible free throw shooting is a huge weakness when it comes to the Lakers trying to win games.

You have no idea what you're talking about. The grizzlies have never been shopping Gasol and he is actually the only for sure untouchable player on the team. They have been gauging interest in Gay and they've had other people calling about Randolph (like every year) but they aren't even shopping Randolph.

In other news, USA troops have entered Berlin and Hitlers regime downfall is imminent.

The Soviets took Berlin, not the Americans. Read up on your history son.

Elite Defense. Surely you can't be talking about the same Greg Ostertag in the video! One of the most flat-footed players I've seen :facepalm
