The Chicago Bulls and Toronto Raptors have engaged in exploratory trade discussions on a deal that would swap the Bulls' Carlos Boozer for the Raptors' Andrea Bargnani, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

Other players with smaller contracts would have to be added to the deal to make the salary-cap math work, should talks indeed progress to a more serious level, but sources told ESPN.com on Thursday that both teams have given consideration to the move.

From Chicago's perspective, sources said, Bargnani's arrival could help address their glaring lack of 3-point shooting and brighten the overall look of its payroll, given that the Italian forward makes $5 million less than Boozer this season. Despite his well-chronicled defensive deficiencies, Bargnani would figure to be an effective pick-and-roll partner for Derrick Rose, once Rose makes his expected return from knee surgery after the All-Star break.

The biggest impediment to such a trade, sources said, is believed to be whether Toronto can realistically afford having both Rudy Gay and Boozer on its payroll beyond this season.

The Raptors, fresh off acquiring Gay from Memphis last week, have been openly shopping Bargnani, who resumed the most disappointing season of his career Wednesday night after missing 26 games with an elbow injury.

Although Toronto's desire to upgrade its front line is an open secret -- as confirmed by their long-running interest in trading for the Los Angeles Lakers' Pau Gasol before Gasol's foot injury this week -- it's believed that the luxury-tax implications of trading for Boozer could ultimately dissuade the Raptors from such a deal, even if Chicago proved willing.

Raptors president Bryan Colangelo told local reporters after the Gay trade that the team was prepared to stray into luxury-tax territory for the "right transaction." It remains to be seen whether a deal for Boozer qualifies.

It's been long assumed around the league that the Bulls might consider releasing Boozer through the NBA's one-time amnesty provision at season's end, but Boozer has tuned out such talk to be one of Chicago's most productive players in 2013, rallying from a so-so start to average 19.5 points and 10.1 rebounds in January.

The NBA's annual trade deadline is Feb. 21 and the Raptors are known to be actively searching for a new home for Bargnani, who was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 draft but has gradually fallen out of favor with Raptors fans after Toronto's four straight seasons out of the playoffs. Their list of potential trade partners is likely to be limited, however, because Bargnani -- on top of his on-court struggles this season -- has two years left on his contract after this one, valued at slightly more than $22 million total.

Bargnani & Kleiza for Boozer?

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=bqbnkv3

That's the only thing that seems to work. Fields' contract doesn't fit. Gay, DeRozan, Val, Ross & Lowry should be untouchable.

Bargs, Gray and Lucas would work but then we would be without a backup PG..

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=a6d8l98

Anyways, I'm all for it. We have no chance at tanking now and the team's talent level is as high as it's been for years. Although, Boozer is always an injury risk and he is owed $45M+ over the next 3 seasons..

Boozer and Val would be a great rebounding tandem for our front-court. Probably the best rebounding we had since AD/Oak/Clark/JYD.. kinda sad since it's been over a decade since that time.

One crappy overpaid PF for a better but even more overpaid PF.

Thrilling.

Wouldn't mind stealing someone like Marquis Teague and letting him develop instead of wasting minutes on confirmed veteran trash like Lucas. But really, I'm sure Colangelo is the one insisting the Bulls take a draft pick as well or something.

I suppose I'm for the deal on the whole, except for the fact that I have loved the Bulls since childhood and this deal would make them worse.

I'm with Q too...we need to get a backup pg out of this so that Anderson and Lucas are never on the floor together EVER.

have you seen him play this season? he's terrible, he was lucky he went first round tbh (barely)

I don't mind the trade. It's probably the best opportunity to get rid of Bargs.

People were talking saying that Boozer would be flipped for Gasol if that trade went through.

That's the only reason I will be okay for this trade. Please make this happen!

Lowry is a better player than Jennings. Having Dalembert's expiring deal instead of Bargnani isn't enough to offset that, IMO.

Can't see it.

If the Lakers were to move Gasol it would be for a PF that can stretch the floor(ie.Bargnani) not for another crappier version of himself.

Gasol is out 6 weeks with a torn plantar fascia. If they can get a replacement PF for the next 6 weeks it could save their playoff lives since they are 23-27 and two spots out of a playoff spot. Boozer would be a good fit next to Howard as well, solid rebounding tandem.

If Boozer expired after the season that might work but he has two seasons left and just like Gasol and Howard don't work together I can't see Boozer and Howard working well together either.

It seems that trade is going to be including John Lucas III and Nate Robinson.

I can't believe there is a team out there that actually wants Bargnani and his contract.

Looks like BC is trying to get himself another 2 year extension - almost everyone will expire at the same time.

Nate is a way better backup than lucas but casey has to love all these defensive players being brought in

The whole thing about that is, like Q said, Boozer has a bigger contract. They owe him 32M over the next 2 years compared to the 22M we owe Bargs. The Bulls are way over the salary cap and owe a ton of money to D-Rose, Boozer, Deng, Noah and then they just gave that pretty big extension to Gibson of 4 years 32M which kicks in next year. I think they are just desperate to get rid of Boozer because of all that money they owe him and that he's the most expendable of all the players. And then they're pretty much like well maybe Bargs could help us in the short term but if not we're paying him less and we just move Gibson into the starting lineup along side Noah to see what he's made of.

something that just occurred to me.
if we want boozer why not just make a bid when he is amnestied?
we could probably get him and keep bargs for the same price.

Because it would solve some of our problems (getting rid of Bargs and getting a rebounder down low) AND we would have a short chance of getting him all thigns considering.

Notice the improvement in JL3 now he gets minutes with Calderon gone ???

Chicago wants this deal to get JL3 back as well as unload a monster Cap hit.

This deal is dead - smoke and mirrors - cause I do not see us moving JL3 or frankly any other player.

Maybe there is a 3 way deal where Barges winds up in Chicago....but I dont see any team in the mix...

League sources said last week the Raptors were told the Carlos Boozer and Nate Robinson deal for Andrea Bargnani and John Lucas III was available whenever they wanted it

Luxury tax for Booze? Not worth it.
