View Full Version : Who is the most overrated player in the league?

Got the thread idea from reading the twitter feed on the ESPN.com NBA page. One of the analysts said Kevin Durant was a top 5 athlete in the NBA. Player? Yes. Athlete? No. But it got me thinking...
Just a quick note before people flip (I know they still will): I'm not saying the following players are bad. In most cases, they're top 10 players in the league. But rate them correctly within the top 10, don't overstate games and abilities, and at least recognize the clear separation between some of the top tiers of players (i.e. Lebron being clearly number one, then Durant and Paul are close, then another clear gap, etc).
Durant -- O/R because, while he is the second best player in the league, he is nowhere near Lebron. There is no argument. Lebron is best, head-and-shoulders best. Also, no way is Durant a top 5 athlete in the league. Dude is probably 3rd on his team (WB, Ibaka), much less 5th in the league.
Kobe -- Phenomenal career. Amazing competitor. Still scary. But not what he once was. Place him solidly inside the top 10, maybe scratching top 5 (this season). He is not in contention for first, nor second, best player in the league. Third is locked up by Paul. Kobe is, AT BEST, fourth. Though the argument can even be made against that as his D has slipped, badly, in the past few years.
Melo -- Nearly unstoppable scoring machine (though not as good as Durant in that regard), that plays lackadaisical D, and has consistently proven to be a relative black hole on offense... yet he's getting MVP consideration? Please. Top 5 scorer in the league. Game-changing offensive game, especially if there are only 2 mins left in the game and it's close. I'd be afraid to play against him then. But let's not overvalue contributions that come primarly through scoring.
Kevin Love -- Gotta step up the D to be considered a top 5-10 player in the league. There are two halves to an NBA game - offense and defense.
Brook Lopez -- Same as Love, only take away the rebounding numbers.
Who else did I miss?
Trolling looks like fun; thought I'd try it

Pre surgery I disagree, just because he took a team to the finals as the central component. There were other players on the team, obviously, but none approaching all-star level. I realize Nelson made the all-star team, but that was a BS choice.

Got carried away with writing something that I figured would be inflammatory. Realized after writing it that I couldn't stand by what I wrote about Love and Lopez because I don't watch them; only check their box scores.

Dwight - the amount of praise he gets combined with the fundamentals he lacks is confusing. Fraud of a big man.
Deron Williams - How the nets gave him a max contract while putting up such piss poor numbers is confusing

Hard to call Rondo overrated when he's appreciated by only Celtic fans, and even some Celtic fans call him overrated too. Can't even remember the last positive thread/post about Rondo from a non-Celtic fan. He's not even overrated by the media, they're all talking about the Celtics being better without him right now.
The fact still remains that he was the best player on an NBA Finals team, and a team that would have been ousted in the 2nd round if it wasn't for his dominant series against the Cavs.

and got to the Finals and promptly averaged 15 ppg, 4 turnovers, 4 fouls in typical Dwight Howard fashion...
Again, I think he's just labeled as this amazing carrier-of-teams, but give credit to the system he was a part of the barrage of three's every night. In that Finals run, Dwight lead the team in scoring in only about half the games.

The most overrated team
Brook Lopez (the best offensive big man in the game?)
Kevin Love (modern day Moses Malone?)
Carmelo Anthony (heavy MVP favorite?)
Kobe Bryant (the greatest Laker ever?)
Derrick Rose (His MVP well deserved?)
Is David Lee really going to be an all star? David Lee.

Kevin Love and it's not even a debate. The fact that some poeple have him in their top 10 is laughable, wake me up when he actually does anything worth praise except collecting rebounds off his own missed layups :hammerhead:

This is a great point. seeing as almost everyone in this thread thinks Rondo is overrated, how is he overrated?
Whoever thinks this Celtics team gets through a first round matchup with any of the top 4 except the Nets is kidding themselves

Kobe Bryant by far. He might be the most overrated player ever.
