View Full Version : Dirk on Kobe and Duncan, Kobe "no. 1 player of my era"

So as a shot artist, what other shots do you admire around the league? I’m not talking about something as general as Ray Allen’s jumper. I’m talking specific shots.
- I'm such a dork, still. This is my 15th year and I still sit, when my wife's asleep, I sit there and watch League Pass. I do it from sometimes 9 p.m. till 12:30 a.m., until the West Coast games are over. I was always a huge fan of Kobe. Obviously, he's now on the declining end, like most of us older guys, but the stuff he does … They are never out of a game. When I get home, at like 11 p.m., I know the fourth quarter will just be starting in L.A., and I'll sit down and watch him basically will his team to win with some incredible shots.

So you don’t buy the idea that Kobe and other stars are playing hero ball there at the end of games? That they are taking really bad shots with two or three guys guarding them?
-Yeah, sometimes it's a thin line. You need a mixture [of plays] to find the open guy, but some nights you just gotta take the team home.

Kobe’s footwork in the post is obviously legendary.
- Oh yeah. The athleticism, the balance in the air, the lefty shots. He made a 3 on us one year in the corner. The shot clock was winding down, and he had to spin around and just shoot it lefty. To me, he's the no. 1 player over the 15 years I've been in this league.

No. 1 over Tim Duncan?
-Duncan to me is obviously so solid, but to watch him play …

Oh, you mean, just in terms of style.
- Yeah. Duncan is probably the best power forward ever to play this game.

You don’t feel like you have a place in that discussion?
- Oh, no, no. I'm not. He's got four rings.

I would imagine Laker/Kobe stans. Dirk won a ring with role players. Even the team he won 67 games with wasn't all that good. The one year he plays with a legit center, he wins a ring.

I mean in the interview, Dirk himself alludes to him preferring Kobe's playing style to Duncan's (which makes sense, regardless of who the better player is, Kobe's game is clearly more pleasing to the eye), which is a big factor in the equation of who he ranks #1 of his generation.

I do think he likes Kobe because they're both shooters through and through.

If we're talking just playing style, again, it leads me to believe Dirk is a just a fan of Kobe and his game. Always has been a fan of Kobe.

Nothing wrong with that. Ask a more traditional big man this question and they probably answer Shaq or Duncan. Certainly there's bias, favoritism, preference, etc.

I don't think anyone would say "good looking playing style" is the end all be all, though.

Shaq picking Kobe... (already called him greatest Laker)
Malone picking Kobe (salty about Duncan being considered a PF)
Barkley picking Kobe (doubt he has Duncan top 4)
Garnett picking Kobe (hates Duncan)
Duncan picking Kobe (humble)

I have a feeling Lebron will be the New barometer of the Current and Future generation to come. He is clearly the superior player to Kobe as an all around player for years now and reaching heights and efficiency that Kobe has never achieved on a personal level. Kobe has championships as he has been lucky to play on some stacked teams but it really overrates him as a player as he has always been a volume shooter/scorer but not really a great all around player and teammate.

Kobe already has over 52K minutes logged in his career. Who cares if Lebron's better than him right now.

its about # of championships by mvp winners

moses malone is routinely ranked around #15 all time... hes an afterthought by most. never gets a top 10 consideration. even while being a champion with THREE league mvps

this right here is proof that you are wrong

lebron needs rings to pass kobe.

atleast 3 finals mvps + 6 titles

i'd let him slide with 4 titles if he can win all the finals mvps with them

league mvp hasnt meant much for a while.

rose, dirk, iverson, have as many as hakeem, kobe, shaq

I don't see what's so blasphemous about what Dirk said, at very least Kobe is top three, even if you don't like him.

He's been too successful, too much longevity, such a good peak, and stayed relevant WAY too long for him not to be considered number 1 of this era, or at the LEAST top three.

Shaq
Kobe
Duncan
LeBron

Only legit arguments, IMO

And LeBron really didn't become arguably the best player in the league until 2008. Which basically means he became alpha of the league with one year left in the decade.

Come on, bro. I'm a fan and I'd admit his play severely limited the Lakers. How could you not even cede that? He had a bad series, by all accounts. In some of the games shot them out of contention. His 2008 Finals wasn't all that much better. Only difference was he was a clear cut alpha, and didn't have a monster on the block, a top ten player of all-time in his prime as a fellow weapon on his squad.

Seriously. The Lakers were blown out in every single game that series. Only game 2 was close. How can one player be responsible for that, especially when the role-players shoot 33% from the field on wide-open shots? Not to mention that Detroit team after the Sheed trade was the best defense in modern history. It's not comparable to LBJ in 2011. At all.

And LOL @ Shaq being in his prime in 2004.

:facepalm

Im not saying kobe played well. Its just ppl wanna compare that with the 2011 dissapearing act.
Oh, well nothing compares to the "Where's Waldo" / "Casper" Finals from Bron of 2011

Dude needs another two all-time great Finals performances to erase that from the memory banks.

But to be honest Kobe hasn't had any great Finals performances or series, either. He had a pretty good 2002, and 2009. But for me, I expected much more out of him on that stage.

He had that game in the 2010 Finals where I finally thought he was going to bust out. He had that absurd 19 point 3rd quarter, and just never truly continued that momentum.

No question... Is there anybody that wouldn't?

Well according to Dirk if he was GM he would take Kobe, then Duncan, then himself. If that's not saying something than I don't know what to say

I think KG is most certainly in that group.

Dirk - " Kobe is the best player of my Generation"

Magic - " Kobe is the greatest Laker ever"

Shaq - " Kobe is the greatest Laker ever"

Bird - " Kobe is my Favorite player now....I would love to play with Kobe"

MJ - " Kobe is better then Lebron....Kobe is the only player that should be compared to me"

Alpha Wolf - " Kobe is the greatest player of his generation.....Kobe is the only player that can see Jordan.....Kobe IMO is the greatest Laker ever"

You know......I hate to toot my own horn.......but when the GOATS agree with me......I can't help it...

TOOOOT....TOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!....

( howl wit a wolf) AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

PS:....

Dirk is one cold Mufaka....and he is def a ALPHA!......but even he would sucum to Kobe's ALPHA and become the BETA.....that's pretty deep.

Dirk is so humble man...

I think he just prefers Kobe's game....Kobe's style...Timmy's game is a bit boring to watch in all honesty...

Dirk has always been a Kobe fan. I remember watching an interview on German TV when he was still playing German 2nd leauge and just entered the national Team. During the interview they showed a report about Kobe who had just entered the NBA and Dirk already complimented him.

EDIT: OHH found it with english subs

This. I would hope that Dirk recognizes what finally brought him a championship - a defensive big man in Tyson Chandler. Combine that quality with an elite offensive post game and the result is Timmy - boring but brings championships.

I respect dirks opinion. Some years ago I hated kobe because it was cool to dis him and I thought he only cared about stats, but while growing up I understood that Kobe is one of the best ever and his game is pure skill over everything. You cant disagree with it. Kobe is baller. Kobe is a winner. #kobesystem #countonkobe

In the other thread Lebron is propped up for making the finals even though he lost since its better to make the finals then not make them at all

In this thread Kobe gets trashed for making the finals and not winning.
