My friend said that regardless of who your team was growing up in the 80's and 90's, you still wanted to be like Mike and was a huge fan of the man. I disagreed because I always like the players below a lot better than Michae Jordan and always wanted Jordan to fail.

Had a love-hate relationship with MJ. Some series I cheered for him, others I couldn't stand him. With no rhyme or reason either.

Was never a fan. I, along with a lot of other people back in the 80's thought he was the biggest ballhog in the league. Kind of the way people of this era feel about Kobe. After watching the Lakers, Celtics, Sixers, Pistons, play unselfish team ball, watching Jordan come into the league and take that many shots, people were like: who the hell is this guy? No one had seen such a ball dominant 2 guard before. Of course I came to respect him once he started winning championships and recognized that he was the greatest scorer that I've ever seen, but I still pulled for any team to knock the Bulls off in those days.

My all-time favorite player growing up in the 1990s was Clyde Drexler.
Drexler NEVER got tired
Drexler NEVER clutched his shorts & rested on his knees in 4th Quarter like MJ.
Drexler had the same level of energy in 4th quarter compared to 1st quarter unlike MJ
Drexler was just stronger, taller, bigger & with better stamina & endurance than MJ.
I just liked how he attacked the rim palming the ball in one hand gliding with ball held very high.
Being from NY, Knicks were ofcourse my favorite team.
Believe it or not, I actually despised MJ because he was better than Clyde & beating up on the Knicks all the time.

Laker fan....I hated him when he first came up.
Magic and Bird was winning all the titles and thought dude was just a one man show selfish just out to score points.
But.......damn was I wrong.
When he came back from retirement and won the other three had nothing but respect for him.
Always loved his kicks though. Got my first pair in 86 when I was in elementary school. Coolest kid in school with those.
But nope was not a fan in the 80's or 90's.
And to think about it...I rooted for the Suns...Sonics.....Blazers....and Utah twice in the Finals against him.

I was a youngster in the early 90's and as a Detroit native, I hated Michael Jordan due to the whole Bad Boys rivalry thing. I also hated the idea of the Bulls beating the Pistons. Then, when Jordan came back from retirement, I'd had a change of heart. I also think I'd matured a little (no longer irrational second grader). I loved the Jordan comeback. The game against the Pacers, the buzzer beater against Atlanta and of course, the double nickel (not to mention the mid-series jersey change).
Then, by the following season, he and his team had once again become so dominant and media coverage of a winning squad so insufferable, that I once again became pretty numb to all things MJ and Chicago. I never hated him during his comeback, but it was just a little much. Always on NBC, always leading Sportscenter, I just wasn't a mega fan. That said, I appreciated him a bit more than I did the first time around. I watched all his big moments and was okay with them.
I'm also one of the rare folk who loved his Wizards comeback. I was bummed when he was bested, but I was all about those vintage moments. As I think about it, perhaps I just like the underdog a little. I seemed to have best enjoyed Jordan when the odds were at least a little bit against him.
I also didn't become a fan of Jordan shoes until 2000 when I was searching for a pair of high tops to combat ankle issues from the previous season. I settled on a pair of Jordan V's and never looked back.

I loathed him when I was a kid. Especially his popularity. It would make me so mad that all the kids in my school were either Blazers fans (local team) or Bulls fans (aka, little bandwagoners!)
Even back in 2nd grade I knew if you rooted for the team just because they won a lot it meant you were a douche!
I seem to recall groups of us yelling back and forth when we were walking in lines. "BLAZERS!" "BULLS!" "BLAZERS!" etc etc. Apparently in our minds back then whoever had the most people yelling a particular team's name meant that team was the better team.
(I think this is actually how it still works on message boards..)

I definitely did not like him at the time. I was a pistons fan and thought he was an asshole. Then, I lived in Chicago during the 2nd threepeat and hated the hype/crowing. I never denied he was a great player or anything, but I certainly didnt root for him.

Because it's an NBA record for most points in a playoff game? And it was Jordan and his below average supporting cast nearly beating arguably the GOAT team in the Garden.
Not that it really would've mattered, because they probably still would've won the series, but that would've tied the series 1-1.

Not to mention it was just his second year in the league. Think of it like this...if Kyrie Irving got the Cavs in the playoffs and they played the Heat in the first round. ISH and the internet would explode and probably crash if Kyrie scored 63 points in Miami and nearly beat the Heat by himself.

And I realized that I probably wouldn't have even watched bball that much in the mid 90's if it wasn't for MJ and the Bulls.

I was never bothered by MJ, I was bothered by his fans. I absolutely can't stand the fact of when you say things against MJ you're automatically tagged as either a youngin, a hater, or unintellegent. I have no problem putting MJ in my top 5.
here's the things I have against him:
1- He is and was the most overexploited athlete in all sports. Media built this hype to the point his followers claim his greatness is definitive
2- His follwers fail to acknowledge the Bulls were a great TEAM with the greatest coach of all-time. Proof was the years without him, the Bulls were still contenders. MJ on another team would not have ganrered that type of success. MJ on Sacremento? Fuggetaboutit
3- His attitude was terreible and he gets defended. Imagine if Jellybean Bryant was murdered. He'd be chastized. He gambled and was a prick off (and on) court
Again, this is not hating, just pointing out facts. I actually thought Barkley was just as dominant, but didn't have the ammo surrounding him. I thought Jordan was insanely great, but this was a case where the myth overshadowed the man

Well where I live is half a world away from any NBA team, so most people growing up playing and following basketball were mostly player only fans.
I started watching NBA-games in '94 and I hated Jordan's attitude and his whole persona. Nearly everyone was his fan back in the day.
My favourite player has always been Shaq and quite possibly always will be.
In my class was a guy who didn't even play basketball that much, but to be in with the crowd he followed the NBA and of course he was hanging on Jordan's *******.
