View Full Version : When do "bandwagon" fans become regular fans?
SpecialQue

A month or so ago the Lakers blew out some team on the road and were getting loud cheers. Kobe even got louder MVP chants than he gets at Staples. In the GT, someone here commented on all the "bandwagon Laker fans" there, but seriously, at this point, are they still bandwagon fans? After two 2nd round exits and a sub-500 record?
The overall question here is: when can someone no longer be considered a bandwagon fan?

You have been making the playoffs/finals for an extended time and spent no practically no time down the bottom of the table. I'd say you'd have to stick through a 2-3 year slump of being shit and not making the playoffs before calling yourself a real fan. Half of the Laker fans have only been watching the game since they have been winning rings, they haven't even seen the Lakers suck ass yet. Watch them jump ship as soon as they miss the playoffs a couple of years.

I really don't consider Laker fans to be bandwagon fans since the Lakers have been pretty consistent. Heat fans on the other hand, is another story. I remember seeing so many heat/lebron threads during 2011 playoffs and as soon as the heat lost, they all vanished. Now they're back again stronger than ever. Pre LeBron heat fans, probably had the least amount of fans on the board and who actually attend games, pretty pathetic. Bandwagon fans become real fans when they support their team through thick and thin

Yes, advice from the sonics fan turned OKC fan who's ready to be a sonics fan again at the drop of a dime while still cheering for OKC is exactly the type of expertise that we need on this subject.
Anyways, as long as you stuck by them 100% through the bad times you're not a bandwagoner.
For instance fans that starting following the Lakers in 2000 & has stuck by the team ever since is someone I wouldn't consider a bandwagoner.
the HEAT fans from 06 who disappears for 5 years only to reappear after the decision are pretty shameless

How about those who gleefully cheered for the Cavaliers for seven years and now take great delight in every opportunity to talk about how bad the franchise was during that span?

I would say... give them time to mature into fans who are more interested in the entire NBA, rather than ones who just want to follow a team until the major pieces are gone.. that way, they could just become regular fans of the NBA or stick to the team that used to have their favourite players.
Usually for the better for viewership sake, sports needs it's new/bandwagon fans.

Yeah, a part of me thinks that a lot of these fans are really Kobe fans, and since he's always been a Laker, they've always been fans of the Lakers. Once he retires and another player becomes the leader I guess we'll find out for sure.

The few heat fans from 2006 at least deserves some props since they watch heat ball prior to LeBron joining. Heat fans grew larger as soon as LeBron and bosh joined wade but disappeared when the heat lost in the finals. The pandemic started when Miami won it last year, and before we know it, its over :facepalm

You have no connection to ANY NBA team. If you're a basketball fan, you're probably going to have a favorite team or favorite player/players.

He's feeling insecure about his clinging to Bron Bron's nut sack, while supposedly being a Laker fan. Knowing full well if he was a legit Laker fan, LeBron and Miami would arguably be public enemy number one. Like I said, we know who the bandwagon fans/trolls are. We can tell by their posts. If they post reasonable and quality posts as an average fan, then nobody has a problem. However, that is not the case here. Many of the post-2010 Heat fans troll and dickride LeBron. Now I am a post 2010 Heat fan on ISH, but I don't do that, and people don't jump on me as much for being a bandwagon fan. I'm just saying those people make the real fans look bad because people generalize all Heat fans with those people.
IDC if you bandwagon the Heat as long as you at least be a solid poster here.

All you ever do on here is ride Lebron's nuts, troll Laker/ Kobe topics, Melo/knicks topics and Okc/ Durant topics, you bash any and evey player that is a threat to Lebron and make attention grabbing ploys with every post you make.
You're a Lebron Stan who claims to be a Lakers fan, yet you admitted before that you stopped being a laker fan after Shaq left.. What a joke
Oh, was that right after you admitted you stopped liking women after you watched "The Crying Game".....
See, I can make up shit that you never said too.
Believe it or not, I say exactly what I believe to be true about Melo/Kobe/Durant.....
Well, maybe not Kobe. I admittedly do ramp that up a little for effect.

This is what I'm saying. I don't mind if he bandwagons the Heat, but if he does this, then people start saying all Heat fans do this, and we all get a bad rep for it.

Lol. How ME does telling the obvious truth make YOU look bad? :confusedshrug:
Yeah, I say Melo is an overrated selfish under-achiever and that Durant get babied by the officials. You gonna tell me I'm wrong? G'head. Tell me I'm wrong about that.
btw, call me crazy, but I'm not sure your "rep" on a forum should be a major priority.

I became a Heat fan because of Shaq and remained a Heat fan even when he left.
And since you admittingly don't like Kobe it's pretty safe to assume this is where you stopped rooting for the Lakers?
I mean really, you're a fan of a team but you hate the one guy who's been a focal point of their past 5 championships.. i mean really?

It doesn't if those people are quality and reasonable posters. If they are just trolls or LeBron stans like a lot of them here, they give the real Heat fans a bad name, and people assume every Heat fan are like those people.
I feel for you... Trust me, I do. We dealt with them for the better part of a decade. That is the downside to having a really great player on your team, unfortunately.

I don't "hate" Kobe. He's CERTAINLY not my ideal choice for a franchise player, but I don't hate the guy.
Full disclosure, I hope when Kobe and LeBron's contracts are up, Kobe retires and the Lakers sign LeBron.

Yes, you're right. I've never rooted for a team this good. All my teams have always been under the radar or mediocre. This is all new to me.

Jesus Christ :oldlol: ... there are teams in the league who would KILL for that. Sub .500 record isn't even that bad for some teams. 2 trips to the 2nd round? That's pretty successful for the majority of the league.
Just because you aren't winning rings and making the finals every year doesn't mean you're up shits creek. Welcome to the NBA Laker fans.
Believe me, this wasn't a "woe is me" thing. It just seems like now would be a strange time to randomly start rooting for the Lakers. I mean, Kobe's been on this team forever...people who were living in their dad's sacs when he was drafted are now going to prom and driving. When could they have been fans when the team had a really big dry spell? I'm willing to give most of them the benefit of the doubt, but then again, they ARE my favorite team.
Anyhow, it's kind of sad that this thread, like nearly every other thread here, has devolved into a general "fvck Lebron fans" thread. :facepalm

these "digs" you speak of, are mostly me not agreeing that Lebron is better than Jordan or is an all time top 6 player already.. When people are discussing him being MVP, best player in the league or anything else about his game i have nothing negative to say because i agree with that?
lately i've been a little anti heat/lebron more than usual because i feel his fans are hyping him up like he's better than prime MJ.. and thats just..no.
and i pay respect to the dope ass throwbacks of Toronto? so what? Also it was a little anti jinx after they beat the Lakers, and hey since then the Lakers have been playing half way decently so :applause:

and if we're all being honest here, my anti Lebron attitude doesn't come from a dislike of Lebron, i was a HUGE Bron fan when he came into the L, still have his Cavs jersey, i just started resenting the media's admiration to label this guy as better than everybody from such an early age, when the comparisons were first made back in like 06 to Kobe. and the media started asking who was better i felt like it was waay to pre mature at the time, and just a typical ESPN thing to do.
Now i feel the same way, with the Jordan comparisons..
let the guy repeat as champion before we start comparing him to MJ

my history of fandom since i started following the NBA
Bulls (Pippen)
Kings (Webber-Christie era)
Suns (Nash MVP years)
Cavs (Lebron)

No offense brah but that ain't any better than bandwagoning.....if u a true MJ fan u would know amount of hate Jordan received after being probably the biggest media sensation even before his first retirement...
Almost everybody is a bandwagon MJ fan, having never been a chitown fan before he rocked the league...remember when NY and Brooklyn rode Jordan because he happened to have been born there? Wasn't THE DUNK Starks the man after he dunked on MJ and Grant? Spike Lee ring a bell?
Trolling is one thing and all in good fun, but Bandwagon hating is not any better than being a bandwagon fan......

Yeah I understand that. I'm from Australia thus have no real allegiance to any city. I was a huge Garnett fan, and thus a Timberwolves fan, but then started watching Durant in college and fell in love with his game thus Seattle to OKC fan.
I will follow Seattle though when they get a team back no matter if the best player is ****ing Byron Mullens. I've now been to the USA and loved Washington State and also Oregon.. so I feel an allegiance to that area now. I'd follow Portland but my favorite color is green and I always had a soft spot for the Sonics.

The overall question here is: when can someone no longer be considered a bandwagon fan?
when the stick with a team through extended suckage. so, no, not after two years of 2nd round exits. after several years of not even sniffing the playoffs.

also, if you are only a fan of a team because of a player (in other words, you will stop rooting for that team after the player leaves or retires) you are a bandwagoneer.

Just saying hating sumone to counteract bandwagoning is just as whack...it might be another MJ story so....

No.
Look, if my cousin gets drafted by an NBA team, whatever fcuking team it is, that's the team I'm gonna be a fan of and I'm ditching my team. Call that bandwagon if you want, but thats what I would do.

I really don't mind bandwagon fans. is it really wrong to cheer for a team because they play the game the right way as opposed to where they are geographically located?
Edit: Also if there were no such thing as bandwagon fans and everyone was a hardcore fan there would be little reason for a team to try and get better.

I'm a strong believer that teams should earn their fanbase. Look at it like this, even if there are a lot of LeBron bandwagoners, Cleveland should have done what it takes to keep LeBron and his fanbase. That's business.
Either make your team interesting, good or both. You'll earn fans.

Fans of bad teams are much more of a fan than fans of teams like the Lakers or Celtics. Most of them only saw who was the best team at the time they started watching basketball and its usually one of the two. Rarely endure hard times and live in a fairytale world with their team.

Don't try to tell me a Lakers fan has just as much Fandom as a f*cking Bucks fan. It takes something strong to be a Bucks fan, Lakers not so much.

You ever been to LA. I can tell you there are plenty of absolutely rabid fans. Why do you think there is so much pressure for the team to succeed? Why, because nobody cares? That make sense to you?
You think Bucks fans or Bobcats fans are as demanding of success? For real?
