I am way more concerned with the attention we give athletes than artists.

I could do without all the fashion hoopla and red carpet nonsense, but I have no problem honoring the best cinema of the year. Even if they get wrong, like when they just robbed Roger Deakins again.

Honestly, as ludicrous as it is/was, that movie made me actually care about a dance contest, and it somehow pulled it all off. The Cooper/Lawrence dynamic was absolutely captivating - they were both phenomenal in that movie. The way those two played their roles, they could have made a parlay about going to the moon for all it mattered.

I totally bought into their relationship too. Lawrence was great. It's DeNiro and his character's entire sidestory that bothered me. I hated every moment of it. For a guy that has a major problem, it sure was treated lightheartedly in a "Oh daddy, you're so silly!" way.

JP is a badass.

I haven't seen any of those Best Actor movies other than The Master but he was phenomenal. I find it hard to believe DDL was better.
It was a toss-up for me. Those two were the class of the category IMO. I would've liked to see The Master get something but I can't argue with the DDL performance.

I thought Jackson was great but I don't think so...certainly not for Waltz. Three great performances.

BTW did you think Waltz belonged in the lead or supporting category? An argument can be made that he's a co-lead, but I think most of that argument is done before the last 30min.

Thank god for Jennifer Lawrence. I've been waiting my whole life to see someone eat shit going up those steps.

And Argo was good, but it was also the second best spy movie of 2012. Affleck doesn't need his dick sucked.

And I just realized that Ben Affleck gets his dick sucked by Jennifer Garner. FML.

You said it. His death before the last shootout disqualifies him as a co-lead. But before that he was certainly co-lead.

You have not seen Denzel in his prime, before he got lazy. His portrayal of Malcolm X is one of the best in film history IMO and he was robbed of the Oscar that year (they tried to make it up to him with Training Day). You can also check out 'Cry Freedom' where he plays South African activist Steve Biko. He was also great in Glory, playing a runaway slave who joins the Union army (pretty sure he won an Oscar for that one).

Who the **** is Frank Slade? Because I laughed at Pacino in Scent of a Woman. Why would I remember anyone's name in that movie.

Actually, I probably didn't laugh, I probably gritted my teeth.

The role is only hammy because Pacino played it that way and his director wasn't strong enough to stop him.

I got the visit the set of that movie and watch dailies. The guy who sold the Lamborghini's was terrible and kept blowing his lines and Pacino just told them to keep rolling and he just kept playing the scene with the guy over and over in one take until he got it right.

Why are you so argumentative?

Because I don't like manipulative, dishonest art. I think it cheapens real emotions. If that's what the director was actually going for, then I think it was a terrible choice.

You don't seem to understand that stopping filming and resetting costs thousands more than to just keep rolling.

You're supposed to shoot a scene until someone gets it right.

No, I do understand that. That part has nothing to do with my review of the movie, just a little behind the scenes trivia. The car salesman comes off as super slick in the movie.

Another behind the scenes thing that was cool was the day I was there they were using a set that was a hotel room. To make it look like a real hotel room, they had these giant blow up photos of the actual buildings across the street from the real hotel. They were three stories high and were mounted so they had lights behind them. They had one for day and one for night. So when you were looking through the windows of the "hotel," it really looked like there were real buildings across the street.

No, you could say he got it for playing the same role (angry, violent black man) he played in every movie, except just doing it really really well. Guy has been a one trick pony his entire career, he's just really, really, good at playing himself. But kudos to him, he was phenomenal in Flight.

Don't even get me started on him glorifying twice-convicted triple murderer in a film so that completely ignores reality. That was a slap in the face to everyone involved with that case not named Rubin Carter. F*ck Norman Jewison too. Anyone who has ever read anything about that case knows that he killed those people.

So we've all been talking about the award winners, but let's get down to business here.

Seth MacFarlane.

Worst Oscar host in history??

B-Low
02-26-2013, 12:36 AM
I don't think Seth did bad. His real sense of humor/style just isn't made for primetime ABC with all of America watching. A lot of websites were complaining that he wasn't edgy enough. But then when somebody does something edgy, the world's in an uproar about how it was inappropriate and offensive and every PC group in the country is picketing the Oscars next year saying he should never be brought back. Everybody who knows who he is knows he could have lit every celeb in that room on fire and put on a hilarious show, but the backlash from that would be even worse than the backlash from people saying he was lame/boring.

I mean honestly, when was the last time anybody thought the host of ANYTHING was good? After every award show, you check the reviews (or ISH) and people are saying how horrible they were. Billy Crystal's too old and boring. Russell Brand is too offensive. Anne Hathaway was too boring. Ricky Gervais was too in-your-face.

Seth did what he was allowed to do, and people are either gonna be bored or offended. America's too diverse for there to EVER be any even ground in between the two.

Patrick Chewing
02-26-2013, 12:40 AM
Fair enough, but when Robert Downey Jr. was up there last night, he was brilliant. Could see him hosting it multiple times. He's a legitimate funny guy.

B-Low
02-26-2013, 12:46 AM
Even if RDJ hosted, I think the producers would just limit him a lot. All the cheesy jokes they make them do just kill even the funniest guys' sense of humor. The funniest parts with the Avengers guys were when Downey and Jackson adlibbed and went against what the teleprompter said.

Basically, if anyone under 40 finds a person funny...everyone over 50 is gonna hate them and be offended by their humor, go online and complain and demand that they never come back. Especially the Oscar-viewing crowd. If you put someone like Seth on the MTV awards and let him go off on the Jersey Shore cast, the Twilight cast, all these rappers/boybands...it'd be gold. But last night even with Kristen Stewart on crutches, limping with messed up hair and a bruise on her arm, Seth comments on how lovely she looks. The producers just kill any legitimately funny comic's energy.

That's why they always fall back on Billy Crystal. Old people love Billy Crystal.
