Los Angeles is my dream city to live at on the down low or somewhere like Carson or Long Beach.

pretty much any of the more noticable cities besides Oakland "looks crappy and dangerous" and Fresno "looks lame"

I really want to move to there so bad

why do you want to move there so bad? The weather? The ocean?

How much?

1. Hit powerball
2. Rob a bank and get away

Its expensive to live out there from people I know who live/have lived there.

But if thats where you really want to go? Try it.

I'd recommend $10-15K

Moving expenses (e.g, UHaul, gas, etc.) -- $2-3K
Rent (e.g., 1st, last/security deposit, etc.) -- $3-4K
Furniture & appliances -- $3-5K
Miscellaneous living expenses (e.g,. cable, phone, internet, food) -- $2K

Just try to set yourself up with a job first. If you know someone there already, headout and spend some time and have a look around before you commit.

It takes a lot of money to live in California. A good rule of thumb is to always have a minimum of 5000 in the bank.

Why not go to Texas, they seem to be thriving.. You can also get a nice place near the water for a great price

LA and San Fran are amazing and amazingly expensive.

Los Angeles? Unless you want to live on the street and whore yourself for money , you'd probably wanna save about 100k.

Anyways why Cali? Why not somewhere like Texas, Florida, or Georgia?

thats what i'm saying. Get more bang for your buck if its warm weather and ocean you are after. Plus the convenience factor of not having to deal with insane traffic, pollution, and population.

You can get a cheap room in Long Beach. It won't be nice, but it'll be cheap enough.

And don't listen to these fools about Bang-for-your-buck. There is no place like California. This is coming from a guy who has lived in Hawaii.

California is really beautiful and there are some nice things about it. Every place has its ugly side and beautiful side though. I know people that have moved out there and liked it. I know people that moved out there and hated it. I know people who have lived out there for decades and moved out because they couldn't take the expense and the sacrifices it takes to live there. If you are a young kid with no money and you asked where should I move, the absolute last places i'd say would be NY and LA just because of the $$$$ and inconveniences.

Are there any inexpensive places in Cali scattered aorund?

A few extra hours to hit SF or Diego wouldn't hurt

All depends on how nice of a city you want. You can get a 1x1 for about $900-1100 in the SFV. Or probably 750 in Watts :oldlol:

Palm Springs/Indio/Cathedral City are pretty cheap.

Same with Fresno & Bakersfield

Los angeles, san fran, and nyc are my 3 favorite cities in the US, bar none...but I wouldn't move out there unless I was wealthy. Not worth the sacrifice for me, I'd rather maintain my lifestyle and just visit whenever I want.

It seems like one would have to work hard, and put in long hours, just to be able to survive, and therefore, wouldn't have the time to partake in many of the things the state has to offer.

A friend of mine moved out there after college with about $10k and got a small apt. Got a job as a tour guide at Universal Studios. She was broke and back in Ohio within about 15 months. Highlight of her time out there was having a 20 minute convo with David Duchovny at Starbucks

Don't California is a failed state

additionally i wouldn't move anywhere near the American south west. iirc it has the highest population growth rate and it is projected to increase dramatically over the years. With the region also being arid to dry with minimal natural water resources, it makes no sense that so many people would want to live there.

Can someone tell me what's so expensive about Cali, is it purely rent?

Save about 3-thousand you should be good

Trust me, LA ain't your dream city especially if you're thinking about saving money to go there. Actually it depends on why you want to move there..if you want to get into the entertainment industry (in whatever capacity) it's worth a shot. You likely won't get the exact job you want but you can get work there if you have enough friends.

If you just want to live on the beach and pick up girls I suggest you lock down a high paying job before you think about moving to the nice parts of LA.

I would suggest one of the cheaper areas just around Miami like Fort Lauderdale.

I' m not even trying to throw salt at the OP, I love you....but if you cannot afford to live in the nicer areas of Chicago, then what are you doing in LA?

What is the appeal behind the desire to live there?

The problem with Texas is that it gets so hot on the months of april to october. And I am from a tropical island where it is summer all year long and I couldn't stand that heat.

I am having a blast living in Orange County. I highly recommend it if you are single and in your 20s or 30s.

Unless you like living your life in traffic and dealing with a maze of freeways, I wouldn't recommend LA. Somewhere on the outskirts would be fine tho I guess.

Nor cal South Bay Area is nice but can be pretty expensive. I would say Portland/Seattle area would be similar to the nor cal experience. more affordable but with worse weather.

IMO California is a bit overrated. I love it but hate it at the same time.

Go to any of the cities on this list that have a low income per household - if you can find a good job yourself.

http://localistica.com/usa/ca/counties/most-populated-counties/

Although I'm not sure if that would really provide you with much of a different experience than Chicago except maybe just nicer weather.

Los Angeles is overrated.

I've never seen so many homeless people in my life. The crappy areas far outnumber the nice ones.

Vacation there but don't set up shop.
