Our knowledge of trauma and how to reconstruct bones ligaments and tendons comes directly from combat. He will be fine and play again!!
Retweeted by Ramona Shelburne

"Hopefully I'll be back in time to watch practice," Ware told ESPN by phone today. "It hurts but I'll be fine. I'll be fine."
He added, "I jumped and my leg felt kind of funny. When Coach P tried to help me up, he gave me a funny kind of look. I'm looking at him and then I look down and I see my bone sticking out. It wasn't a hurt feeling. I just went into shock.
"In the moment, you don't know what's wrong with you. You're just looking, thinking, 'How did this happen?' I never watched the replay. I never want to."

I was at the gym watching this game when I saw this injury. As someone who's torn my ACL once and meniscus three times, I had to get out of there and clear my head.

That's not just a broken leg. There's going to be significant ligament damage with the way his leg contorted. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a torn/ruptured ACL, PCL, and MCL. That'll take well over a year to rehab from. Hope Ware can someday return to the court.

Not only that, they could amputate his leg below the knee, like they almost did to NFL player Napoleon Mcallum on a similar injury before he finally healed.

All I had to here was that he was from Bronx, NY to know why such a rare injury happended. 2 words SHIN SPLINTS. Out here in NY if you balling on concrete playgrounds without proper basketball shoes you develop "Shin Splints" or excruciating pain in lower legs since you can't properly land on concrete floors especially without proper shoes. The hardest part of the rehab will probably be the mental hurdles, just learning to trust his leg again. All he did was jump and land and it just snapped, not like he got undercut on a layup a guy landed on him or something.

Chicks dig scars, so there's that I guess. He'll have some gnarly ones.

I've actually seen this happen in real life during a basketball game. It was at a tourney...the gym was hardwood laid right on top of concrete. No give whatsoever. We were watching in the stands waiting our game to start...guy goes up for a routine rebound comes down and "snap". It was very subtle and sounded like breaking a big piece of styrofoam. Guy screamed...no...shrieked for a second or two then complete silence. We assumed he went into shock. They brought a stretcher and when they placed him on it his foot was moving around like a fish on a hook.

Totally surreal and none of us were in the mood to play after that.

Never imagined I would hear or see it happen again.

I know third degree burns cause zero pain because all the tissues are already damaged to a point where there's no sensation. I wonder if it's similar, where the damaged parts of your body just loses its sensation that you don't feel a thing.

I believe you but damn. My friend's ankle went through his skin like that in a most pit accident. He was screaming in pain before he saw how ugly it looked. Once he looked at it, he was calm and not saying anything. Of course that was because he was in shock once he looked at it. But still. ****.

Has anyone seen that House episode where one of the patients bones break really easily. The person ends up having cancer which caused the bones to become really frail. I was looking at that picture and his shin bone looks hollowed out in the middle.

I'm probably wrong but it is definitely strange that his leg did that. Could it really be just a freak accident or does this guy have a bone density issue?

The hollow part is the bone marrow, where it has blood and all sorts of cells in there. Looks like normal bone structure to me.

In the end it is just a broken bone, no joint involved. It's when they start having to rebuild your knee that it gets tricky. From the pic looks like a fairly clean break.

The biggest fear in really severe breaks like that one is seriously damaging the ability for blood to circulate below the fracture. This can result in gangrene, which would mean amputation or worse.

That said, it sounds like things are under control and this kind of complication isn't a huge concern at this stage.

What exactly was the injury? A broken tibia, dislocation?Only thing I've seen/heard is "broken leg," which'd obviously be his tibia. Pitino said immediately after the game that he broke it in two places, which doesn't make it any easier, but I'd think that's more of a problem with it healing properly as opposed to the actual surgery.

It's a really terrible injury, but if he can get through it mentally and learn to trust his leg again there's no reason he shouldn't be able to play ball again.

I'm not sure if you can give a name to an injury where your leg snaps in half and the bone is sticking out.

Its called tibia/fibula compound fracture. Breaking your tibia usually always looks more gruesome than breaking any other long bone in your body because tibia has basically no support at all infront of it and a bit to the sides aswell (muscles/tissue etc.)... its basically just skin infront of it (touch your shin and see for yourself, you can almost feel the entire bone in detail), so when the tibia breaks then the skin will usually not be able to keep the bone from revealing itself :P

Looks he will be perfectly fine, infact the bone will heal up and be even stronger....

He was unlucky, but still very lucky imo... because with such tibia fractures there is big risk where the bone will pierce through more vital directions as it can severe/damage some arteries/nerves/tendons beyond repair.... leading to amputation.... hell if it severes that big artery there you are gone to meet your maker in 5-10 mins tops due to blood loss if you dont get help...

Dude's already been paranoid as **** about coming back. I would think there's no way he'd think about risking it now after watching that.

is he even a talented player or just a scrub?
Like that is even relevant right now :facepalm But to answer your question, I'm sure if he's playing in a game to get into the Final Four I'm sure he's not a scrub

Because I know people that have gone through it. I know you must think he's the first person to ever have this injury... but he's not.

have you had the injury?...what makes you think it's not uncommon?

:lol GTFO here...

Have you had the injury, or know of someone that have gone through it? What makes you think it's not possible? GTFO... etc.

- so this person you know( compound fracture of the tibia) was on crunches the next day??

- I have never had a compound fracture of my Tibia..

- I have been playing BBALL and organized Basketball for nearly 30 years...

- injury's I have had.... many Torn/ankle ligaments....Torn plantar...Plantar Faciaitus...broken eye sockets....broken fingers...Sprained Knee, tendanitus..

even when I tore Ligaments on my ankle I could barely put any weight on my foot for a week.( Hospital told me to use a wheelchair for a week)

but since I'm so Alpha...I hopped around on 1 foot all week....and still balled

- all I was implying was...he snapped his Tibia/bone sticking 6" out his skin....next day he is putting weight on his leg/walking in cruches. ( rather then being wheeled around )

- I never said it's not possible...I said it's prolly not common...Ware is just damn Alpha....An Alpha giving props to another Alpha...that is all....

Alpha recognizes Alpha.

Yes, and it also happened to him while playing basketball, basically the exact same way as Ware, except my friend was contesting a shot at the rim. His snapped inward instead of out like Wares. He was walking with crutches right after surgery. It actually happened only a few months ago.

I'm not saying it's not a big deal, because months after the surgery my friend can't walk too much or it becomes very painful he says.

That's a complete break. Could have ended much worse for Kevin. Good to hear that he's going to be ok.

That dude does have some skinny legs. Makes me wonder how Durant hasn't suffered the same fate.

Skinny doesn't automatically equal weak. Ware either had a stress fracture to begin with and the landing snapped it, or he has some calcium/bone density issue. It's not normal to land like he did and snap your leg. I could see if someone undercut him or he got knocked off-balanced in mid air, but no one hit him and all he did was contest a shot.

Very similar injury in a NCAA basketball game in 2009'..player recovered and is playing overseas!!

reading about compound fractures in sports....they are actually fairly common.

I think both will be able to return to their sports. Bones heal stronger when they break. That's what I've heard anyway.

yes...skinny legs.....

look at this skinny guy....If only he had more muscle mass on his legs..

http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2008/0303/mma_silva_throat_kick_580.jpg

:facepalm seriously...watch basketball...90% of all the great leapers have skinny frames....the fact that Ware jumped so high made it possible for a fracture.

anyone's leg will snap if they land on it and put enough pressure.

Damn it.........Epic Fail on me

sorry Spider about dat jinx

Should have been cut after he skipped his court date for speeding in a rental car without ever mentioning it to his coach.

He should have been cut with Chane Behannan.

But Ware became famous for breaking his leg. Cutting him would be a bad PR move. So they medically red shirted him for the season. He didnt attend any games after the initial 9. Even home games.

Hes trash. And trouble.

Auburn and Georgia State will let him run wild.
