View Full Version : Is Kobe the greatest Laker ever?

No.
LA gave more to Kobe than Kobe gave to LA. in fact, Kobe took from LA (a couple of rings they could've had if he wasn't such a diva and ran out Shaq)
Will they be building statues of Kobe Bryant in Staples Center anytime soon?
No.
Is he the most overrated superstar in NBA history?
yes.
but is he a superstar? yes.
if Kobe isn't the greatest Laker, then how much more the greatest NBA player?

Laker fans: to some of them he is, to most of them he will be
Non-Laker Fans: he is not
Laker fans: the majority of Laker fans older than 30 will never put Kobe up there, because they fell in love with Showtime. Nothing beats adolescent worship. Laker fans who are 25 or younger will mostly have Kobe as the greatest Laker ever -- if they don't already. Between ages 25-35 there is actually a debate.
As for non-Laker fans: it's a lot easier to hate the present team if it has a player that is NOT the greatest Laker of all time. :oldlol: It's called cognitive dissonance reduction.
As for me: I think he will end up the greratest Laker of all time. Not the best thoughj. He is not the greatest yet, but if he keeps playing another 4-5 years he will be. The best he wil not be.

Kobe is going to become the greatest Laker ever. Not overnight, but 10 years from now the general consensus will have him as the best player and a top 5 player ever.
Basketball diehards will favor Magic and Kareem, some of them Shaq, too. But to people in general... it's Kobe. And greatest Laker is determined by the fanbase, not some experts.
Should Kobe play 4-5 more years, he is the greatest laker ever and top 5 GOAT. Especially so if he somehow ends up with another ring (not likely but I wouldn't rule it out) and becomes #1 in total ponits scored.

So Kobe will have to play 20+ years to be considered the Greatest Laker, where as it only took Magic 12 full seasons.

KAJ is the greatest of all time but since you don't know much about basketball being an Aussie that you are, I will explain.
KAJ didn't even play that long with the Lakers compared to Kobe.

That doesn't make any sense, unless you want to start getting into non-basketball related criteria, like money, fame, ect..
If 13 years of Magic Johnson as an NBA player are more valuable than 17-20 years of Kobe Bryant as an NBA player, then 13 years of Magic Johnson as a Laker are more valuable than 17-20 years of Kobe Bryant as a Laker, and vice versa. Of course , I'm speaking strictly in terms of basketball related impact, which is all that should really matter.

Not true if Kobe ends up with the longest career as a laker ever.. Most points, rebounds, other stats, etc. as a laker. That matters in a discussion about greatest laker ever and not player because kobe is not those things compared to everyone on every team but he is on the Lakers.

You could make a case for Kobe as the greatest Laker ever after the championship in 2010. As a matter of fact, Magic himself already did at that time. I don't see how extending your career and playing at a very high level after you should have faded away can HURT your chances in that discussion.
Greatest Laker means most apreciated by the fans. You dont have to be the best player to ever play for the Lakers. Fact is there are a few "greatest Laker ever" players. For some its Kobe, for some its Magic, for some its even Shaq.
This is like asking which is the better color, blue, red or yellow.

it's ok, your boy Lebron won't even crack the top 10 GOAT for joining 2 other top 5 players in their primes.
When it's all said and done I think Kobe will be remembered as the greatest Laker. Right now he's right up there with Magic/Kareem, basically a 3 way tie. Another championship before he retires would put him on top by himself IMO.
When he retires for a long time he'll be the Lakers all-time leading scorer, the longest tenured player in Lakers history, most games played in a Lakers uniform etc. etc. And most importantly if he wins another ring he won more championships with the Lakers than Kareem/Magic.
Magic didn't bring Laker fans in from other cities.
I beg to differ. Even I was a fan of Showtime. He had a smile to light up the building and all those battles with LA - then the ascension of MJ - the NBA will never be as popular as back then. Can't imagine what it would have been like then with the satellite, cable, internet, etc they have now.
Magic is listed higher on most people's GOAT lists and spent his entire career as a Laker (unlike KAJ and Wilt) so logically Magic is the greatest Laker.

Do you honestly believe he'll win another championship with the Lakers? Good luck to you - this team ain't winning anything and there's no time to rebuild - (no draft picks) so unless another GM does ANOTHER STUPID move .... The only way I see him winning is leaving the Lakers and playing on a contender for peanuts (with the CBA the way it is now).

You couldn't be more wrong. Stat compiling is not a true method of validating greatness. What Kobe has done is sustained a high level of play for longer than most.

He won't pass them on the scorecards of hardcore basketball fans, especially if they are not Laker fans. But I'll give you he won't even pass Magic and Kareem on the scorecard of hardcore Laker fans either. But there aren't that many hardcore fans.
The casual fans (i.e.: the majotrity of the fanbase) is going to have him as #1 within not too many years. Older fans go out of fashion (first) and life (second). Plus the media. Plus the body of work.
Personally, I think I am going to put Kobe at #1 if he keeps playing a few more years. He is not better than either Magic or Kareem were, but we are talking about greatest Laker and not best ever Laker here. The best ever Laker was Magic. The best player the Lakers had was either Kareem or Wilt. The best player at his peak the Lakers had was probably Shaq. But the greatest Laker is going to be Kobe.
I hope you can see the difference.

I understand your points; I just disagree with them. Your first assumption seems to be that the assignation of #1 Laker status should be validated by casual fans, rather than those you described as 'hardcore'.
I'll place my bets with the 'hardcore' element, which is, of course, much better informed than the casual element.
Secondly, I have noted your arguments about longevity. You're trying to elevate that factor, while attempting to de-emphasize the individual greatness of a given player.
In other words, you feel that Kobe's accumulated stats more than make up for the fact that he's a lesser player than either Kareem or Magic.
I disagree, whether the discussion is about the greatest players of all-time or the greatest Laker of all-time.

No, what I'm saying is that more than one factor has to be weighed when promoting a player as the best of anything. How good the player was in their prime is one factor. How long a player has sustained his level of excellence with one team is another.
The basis of this discussion is that people disagree on how much weight to place on either main factor.

We shall see in 10 years. I think Kobe is going to be top 5 GOAT and #1 Laker by the general consensus. I personally doubt I'll have him in the top 5 ever, but I think I'll give him the title 'greatest Laker ever' if he plays 20+ years as a Laker, wins the most rings as a Laker and holds almost every Laker record.
But I have no problem with anyone thinking otherwise. These are not facts, just opinions.

I've been posting 'here' for more than 10 years now.
I hear that. Nice 'compliment' for Jeff, by the way.

Well when it's all said and done Kobe will have numerous Lakers records, all time records blah blah blah and would have helped deliver the same amount of titles to the Lakers as Magic. In terms of legacy he will go down as the greatest Laker but that doesn't mean he was the better player.

Kobe= beat opposing teams
Magic= beat AIDS and opposing teams
Magic wins.
No seriously, Magic was the better player and achieved so much in his 12 and a half seasons. He's #1.

No, he is not.
But, for once I agree with Ripthekik ( for the most part), no shame in being behind two who are top 5 all time.
I do disagree with Rip that Kobe is in the top 5. Don't be ridiculous.

it's not ridiculous when NBA legends call him a top 5 player ever
he'll retire with a very strong case for top 5

Jerry admits that Kobe was better, Jerry has no real argument over Kobe imo, especially as a Laker, Kobe's been a major factor in 5 championships for the Lakers organization
West is one of Kobe's biggest fans and considers him the greatest Laker ever.

The only match for him is Magic, who I would indeed rank above Kobe, largely on the strength of him being a better player.
It is close though. The ring stuff and roles largely wash out, IMO.
Kobe has Magic on tenure and volume production, while Magic wins out in terms of being a better player (in and around prime).

It's funny because half of you wanna act like whoever doesn't say Magic or Kareem is being a biased Kobe fan, but when you consider the FACTS, saying anyone over Kobe as GOAT Laker is being biased in itself.
Kareem was a Buck originally, won a ring with them in his prime.
Magic caught AIDS, so who knows how far in he would of went, idc if his career was cut short by the sickness, that's consolation prize shit, and it's not like he loses his place as a clear cut number 2 or title of most dynamic Laker of all time. Because that's what Magic is, he changed the game and the Organization, but to say that he's better than Kobe, who has just as many rings mind you, and is way more dominant is just a phucking joke.
Kobe Bryant has been playing on this Team at a high level for almost 17 years, holds most of the Team records , except one or two.
He's the Greatest.
Lebron fans , ask yourself this , if everything goes honkey dory and you get those 8 rings Lebron promised & he holds all of the Team records, do you really think you'll be saying Wade is the Greatest Heat player of all time? Phuck no.

2 - Kareem
3 - Kobe
4 - Shaq
5 - West

I'd say
1 - Magic
2 - Kareem
3 - Kobe
4 - Shaq
5 - West
It is very tough to rank Kareem over Kobe in my opinion.
The period where he was winning big AND putting up top-flight individual statistics is actually somewhat small.

Just curious...
(For those who say Magic was a better basketball player)
- what skillset makes Magic a better "Basketball player?"
- Could Magic run the offense better? YES....he was the greatest playmaker ever (IMO) I'm not sure that makes him a better player then Kobe.
- For instance I had countless arguments in the late 80's/ early 90's about "passing" vs " Creating a good shot for yourself"
- This is when MJ was starting to take over the League and his ability to create an Offensive play for himself was starting to be favored vs " finding passing lanes"
- put pressure on the defense and attack....take over the game and create for yourself...If you get doubled or even tripled then find an open man.
Let's face it....MJ wasn't as good as Running an offense as Magic...nor was he as good a Rebounder....
__________________________________________________ ___
- But MJ's offensive ability and his tenacious defense put him above Magic in alot of people's eyes......This also holds true for Kobe.
I would argue that Kobe actually held more responsibility for his teams overall success....
Kobe molded his game to be able to take over games with his ability to Create an offensive play for himself ( as did MJ)....to go along with Top Shelf defense/ the teams top defender ( that role Magic never really put himself in)
__________________________________________________ _____
I think the Magic / Bird era was the greatest Basketball ever....nothing will ever come close (IMO)
as far as technical Basketball and skill sets....Kobe is the Greatest Laker ever....simply put He is the best Basketball player "Accolades/skill/Longevity " that ever played while "wearing" the Laker Uniform.
Shaq , Logo and Even Magic Johnson have echoed this statement.

Kobe's had a bigger impact
That multi billion dollar TV deal was built on Kobe's back...
Having been around through the Magic years, and Kobe's time here Kobe easily trumps any other Laker as far as impact on the fan base, the city and the Lakers organization itself.
It's really not as close as some would like to believe.
Every facet of the Lakers organization has Kobe's fingerprints all over it. Much deeper than Magic had
You can say Magic is your favorite Laker or argue he's the fan favorite but greatest Laker ever belongs to Kobe when you look at the complete picture

no it's about skill....technique and skill> impacting or whatever that means.
Kobe's skill set allowed him to close games and run the offense while Shaq was on the bench in foul trouble.
Kobe had the ball in his hands...Kobe fueled the comeback in 2000...Kobe made the crossover on Pippen ...Kobe made the pass ( that started the 3 peat in the First place)
Shaq dominated 3' from the hoop...Kobe Dominated the whole court and continued to do so

Do people actually think that Magic truly means it when he says that Kobe is greater than him, or that Jordan is greater than him?

He may say the gracious thing in public but I really, really doubt that he does not believe that he is the greatest player ever. Same goes for Jordan, Kareem, Bird, Kobe, etc....

Ok youre just trolling now. Impact is who improves the team chance of winning. All the crazy hard shots kobe takes only gets him 2 or 3 points. This isn't ice-skating where you get judged on how pretty it is sissy boy.
