Decided to quit smoking on 3 days ago after smoking a packet a day for the last 4 years. I have to say this journey hasn't been easy
Day 1:
Day 1 wasn't too bad, had my cravings but was determined to see this through. I snapped all my cigarettes in half and had hopefully my last cigarette. I slept like a baby this night and got to bed much easier than i usually do.
Day 2:
First full day without a single cigarette. This was hard but i was trying to pre-occupy myself to keep my mind of cigarettes, so i was working harder, taking deeper breathes and spent a longer amount of time in the gym. Controlling the cravings this day wasn't the hardest however i met up with a lot of my friends for dinner last night where 90% of them smoke. I didn't have a cigarette but before i went home i was nearly about to cave until i snapped went home and went to bed. Slept like a baby again.
Day 3: Today has been the hardest. I slept well but i woke up very early, i have been trying to pre-occupy myself all day with work and catching up on certain things I have been procrastinating for the last few weeks. The cravings have really set themselves in. I keep thinking to myself its just one cigarette, yet i know not to have one. However i don't know what my judgement will be if someone smokes one in front of me than offers me one. Its only 1 pm right now here in Sydney and I've got a long day ahead of me with work later tonight. I've been substituting cigarettes with coffee's however i don't want to be too buzzing and crash later on before i have to start work.
If anyone has ever kicked the habit before please give me some advice!!!

Good work mate, keep it going.
I recently quit (haven't had one since Jan 2nd) and the best advice I can give you is to get yourself a hobby of some sort, even just in the short term. You need something to keep yourself busy for the next couple of weeks. The first 3-5 days are the hardest but it gets a lot easier after that. Try staying inside too, alot harder to not smoke when people are doing it around you.
Good luck.
You can do it. 3 days is a great start. You're doing amazing. Think about the person you used to be, and think about the people who wouldn't be able to even go a single day. Keep your mind on this goal. Anyone can do it.
If anyone has ever kicked the habit before please give me some advice!!!
I post this shit every single time someone mentions trying to quit and I will post it again.

Download this book and read it. You will quit. It is that simple. Smoked for 6 years and quit cold turkey with ease after reading this.
If you are trying to find it online just google the title of the book and add the word "pdf" to your search.

I knew you had a good heart and just putting up a d*ckish online persona for comedic value (like me). This book is much appreciated and something I will be investing my time in (when I read a book, I make sure I read it 3x just so the ideas will be imbedded in my mind).

Good luck man keep it up
Quitting smoking is the best thing you'll ever do for yourself. No matter your age or physical condition, you won't believe how much better you feel. Food tastes better. You will no longer have that stench that people have noticed on you but never mentioned. You will waste less time hanging out, taking a little quality time to slowly kill yourself.
Good luck!!!

day 4: I'm sleeping less and less but feeling refreshed each time I'm waking up. I used to have a cigarette just before i went to bed probably for the last year and a half - 2 years. I went to bed last night at roughly 1230pm and i woke up at 630am(usually wake up at 8am) feeling completely refreshed and alert. However the cravings kicked in this morning. I keep thinking to myself "was that really my last cigarette?" I've noticed i'm breathing a bit better and I'm smelling things much better. However if someone is smoking a cigarette 50 meters away from me i can smell that shit.
Either way I'm certain the cravings will start slowing down by the weekend.

Ah, if I had a dollar for everyone who said "I can kick it whenever".
So, if you can, why not? Smoking isn't helping your health, finances, sense of taste or the way you smell. It's also devaluing your car. What's the benefit to you?
Stop today. Best thing you'll ever do for yourself. And since you can do it whenever, now is a great time.

People who smoke in NY make me laugh. It's $11 a pack. ELEVEN DOLLARS. you have to be nuts to spend $11 a day on something that essentially is killing you and not in a subtle fashion.

Personally, I find it more disgusting when people eat fast food; I don't know, just the reputation it has: highly unhealthy, sh*t in some of the burgers, some are made of horses, and it is clearly the most dangerous thing you can do to your body (heart disease and obesity kill more people than smoking and car accidents).

Very brave of you, my daddy stopped smoking and since his health have been so much better. I remember him gaining weight in the early stage of quitting, my guess is cigarettes makes you eat less (loss of appetite or something along those lines). Then my mom made him go jogging and he looks much better now and also doesn't smell that dreadful smell.

I'm not a smoker but I do think smoking can be relaxing. I kind of envy the people who grab a nice smoke outside on a beautiful day and let the smoke run freely through the air or at a cafe(obv not in the states) after a nice coffee.
That being said I still won't ever smoke.
To the smokers why do you smoke exactly? Do you have a oral fixation or is it actually relaxing?

Smoking is not relaxing at all. The whole relaxation thing is an illusion only a nicotine addict can experience. What that means is that the only relaxing aspect is the fact that you are relieving a craving that is irritating you. If you arent a fiend for nicotine than nothing about smoking is relaxing

Saturated fats in food is probably the leading cause of death for people with heart disease and then you add the percentage from other diseases such as obesity and cancer and the food you eat is clearly the leading cause of death in the US.

You should really get that easyway book already posted about in this thread, it's going to help you out a lot.
You are showing every sign of starting up again with the way you're going about your quitting.
You are not craving a cigarette because you didn't go to the gym, you're craving it because you think you crave it, and that's your problem.
Right now you are in a state where you think you miss cigarettes, where you think something has been taken away from you and that smoking is still something you'd enjoy.
In short, the book will help you get to a state where when you think about a cigarette you will think about good it feels not to smoke it, not how much you'd wish you could just smoke that one last cigarette.
The book also deal a lot with realizing that it's hard to quit cigarettes because society and other people say it is. Think of a nicotine gum commercial, their main point is telling you that it's hard to quit, that you really can't and instead need a substitute. They do this because they want you to buy their products.

tbh that was just a bad craving episode and i needed to vent. not craving anymore at this time (basically why i started this thread, helping me vent and try and clear my mind whilst i make entries along the way)
Also i have the book, just haven't read it. Paid the full $19.95 for it as well.
Shut down your browser and start reading, reading that book is the best advice you'll ever get for this.

OK. Prior to my 20's I probably hadn't smoked a total of one pack. Random smoke at a party kinda guy. Took a job where everyone smoked; this before indoor smoking and smoking in the workplace became taboo. Went almost immediately to a 1//2 to a pack a day smoker.
At 30 I was out of shape for the first time in my life and decided it was time to change that. Took about 30 minutes to figure out that I needed to be able to breathe first. Got the patch and, after a couple tries, quit completely.
Roughly 10 years later I again had shortness of breath and was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, a somewhat rare genetic disorder that results in emphysema. I was in bad shape, and am only alive today thanks to a double lung transplant in 2008. The doctors say that had I not quit smoking when I did, the damage would have come much more rapidly. Additionally, had I still been smoking, insurance would have decreed me ineligible for Alpha-1 therapy and the lung transplant.
For years after I quit I'd smell a cigarette in certain situations and have a craving. But they became fewer and farther between. Now the smell repulses me.

Congratulations. I need to hear stories like these to motivate myself. I started smoking for a stupid reason: I was working at a very stressful private company where breaks were few and far in between besides the usual lunch break, and the older veterans had more breaks (meaning when they get a craving), they were allowed to go outside for 10-15 minutes whenever they feel like it; at first, I was just pretending to puff the cigs and blowing it out, but then over time, I started inhaling and the rest was history.

Give op his respect. It's not easy, we know how hard it is. Coming from someone who every single friend I have have smoked and are druggies, pot heads, etc, I'm going on 21 years strong without ever even smoking once.
$11 a pack a day is a shit load of money to save, let alone spend. Think about it, $11 a day multiplied by 7 days. $77+ sales tax saved a week alone. That's enough money per 8-9 months to get you a helping hand on a new car, or shit like that.
I just left my boy not to long ago, he's about to burn mid grade weed for $30-35 with a boy. This dude is constantly smoking. I mean the extra cash might not mean much but the life your saving alone is just worth it.

you have to make someone feel insecure over the internet to try and make them feel mentally weak. Yeh your heaps tough.
3-4 day is by far the hardest days, after that it gets easier! My best advice is to do activities in which you normally wouldn't associate with smoking. For instance, when I played basketball I could go hours and hours without smoking. Because.. who the hell smokes while playing basketball? So while quitting, I spent as much time as possible at the court.

Good shit. To all of you who are in the process of quitting, I cant stress enough how useful the book is. The author is a very intelligent man who has a complete grasp on nicotine addiction. Understanding why you smoke makes the task of quitting MUCH easier, to the point where it is not much of a challenge vs. the draining struggle of quitting through any other method.

Just switch to electronic cigs? I've smoked on and off since I was 18 and am now 29 and have never found myself addicted. Generally it could be a money thing, but I seem to have weak lungs in general and get a cough from smoking when I've been smoking regularly often. I haven't had a cig in a couple months now, but the lungs aren't really that much of issue for me. My liver and the pounding I give it with alcohol is going to kill me before any kind of tobacco product could.

Thats a great start. I'm a weird case though. Smoked pack a day 2 yrs straight, then quit cold turkey for 2 years. Started again a pack every 3-4 days for half a year, quit cold turkey again (and still going) with no cravings whatsoever. Even during my no-smoking phases like atm, I smoke at parties when im drunk. Like 2-6 cigs.

Dumb as hell, yes, but not even close to most ignorant. I know this one retard who, just because he could quit cigs cold turkey after 3 years of heavy smoking, said that not being able to quit it is pathetic and now the kicker: he then started comparing cigs to heavy crack addicts and said crack addicts were just mentally weak and stupid for not being able to quit cold turkey. Like he forgot there's this whole "physical addiction" thing, lol

Day 21 / Week #3
I finally downgraded my nicotine gum from 4mg to 2mg...
I got on the scale and was very disappointed to see that only weigh 175 lbs (I'm 6' 2" and trying to get up to 195)
I'll weigh myself again in another 3 weeks... hopefully by then I'll see a significant difference.

Pairing an improved fitness routine with quitting is effective. Aside from the usual benefits, you distract yourself and kill your idle time. Cigarettes find their way into idle hands.
Also, you tend to gain weight after. I've gained 40+ pounds of fat since I quit 3 years ago and am just now starting to take it off. Still, quiitting is the best thing I every did. Good luck to all the quitters in here.

As someone who has chewed tobacco on and off for 7-8 years, I can definitely say that it is possible for some people to be able to quit whenever they want. I have gone years without chew and never really wanted it that badly. It's too expensive in Canada anyway. But whenever I'm in the US I bring a bunch back, chew every day for a month, and then not again for six months. I don't crave it, I just enjoy it.
So for some of you guys in this thread to act like it's impossible to enjoy tobacco and that anyone who has it on a semi-regular basis is an addict who rejects reality I think is pretty narrow minded.

Congrats. I don't know how people do it. I smoke a pack a day probably, and have for quite some time and it'd be a task for me to cut down to 5 smokes a day, let alone quitting all together. Whenever I try and quit I last like 10 hours and end up chain smoking 6 and smoking heavier than I did the week before.
I shouldn't be giving out tips obviously but I'm always told toothpicks can help replace the smoke, taking a shower whenever you have a craving as well. Tried one of those fake smokes, the one's without nicotine that light up and it kinda helped. Vapour or something? Has no chemicals, but you exhale smoke or air or whatever, kinda neat :oldlol:
One thing is certain smoking f*cking blows.

Today is May 1st...
and I quit on April 1st... ONE MONTH.
I'm still not celebrating yet... I'm gonna hold off on that until July 1st.
I only chew like two or three pieces of nicotine gum a day...
It's starting to feel really good to be smoke free.
Now I need to start focusing on some kind of exercise/diet journal.
