View Full Version : Shooters with the best range?
fpliii

Not to piggyback on the other thread (though pauk's mentioning of range of shooters gave me the idea), but which shooters in your opinion have/had the best range? I'm talking about deep three range here (multiple steps behind the line), but not prayers (I'm not interested in half court heaves, but legit attempts).
Feel free to separate spot-up shooters from guys creating their own shots (or using other further categories).
Current
J.R. Smith 6
LeBron James 6
Kobe Bryant 5
Jimmer Fredette 3
Carmelo Anthony 2
Stephen Curry 2
Vince Carter 2
Chauncey Billups 2
Randy Foye
Jamal Crawford
Ryan Anderson
Kyle Lowry
Joe Johnson
Chris Paul
All-Time
Gilbert Arenas 3
Dan Majerle 3
Tracy McGrady 2
Stephon Marbury 2
Reggie Miller
Eric Piatowski
Peja Stojacavic

Kobe. He takes quite a bit of long 3s.

Current or all time?
All time would have to be Reggie miller.
On a related note I haven't seen jimmer take any of his famous WAAAY behind the line three pointers lately, but that guy has sick range.

Both are fine. Perhaps we can try and put together two separate lists.

This three by Lebron is pretty deep
no pun intended

What Jimmer Fredette did in BYU still makes me believe that he has the best range. Unfortunately, he seems to be restrained from doing so nowadays.

I was going to mention Arenas, also ad Eric Piatowski and Peja Stojacavic to the list.

In the NBA today, I'd put Randy Foye up there because I watch a lot of Jazz games and he consistently shoots from a few feet behind the arc, and still makes it.

The NBA three point line is 23'9", standard three point line is 19'9". Most NBA fans don't appreciate how far 23'9" is. The guy at your local gym who drains 3 pointers from "anywhere" is shooting from at most 2-3 feet behind an NBA three point line. NBA players with deep range are a threat from 5-10 feet behind the NBA arc, roughly 34' jumpshots.
The only guy on the Bulls having that kind of range was Piatowski (who I already mentioned). Among guys who played against the bulls only two stood out: Gilbert Arenas and Peja Stojacavich (i already mentioned both). Gilbert was the only guy who had to be picked up 10-12 feet behind the arc, and the only guy I ever witnessed who could hit pullup jumpers from there. Stojacavich could catch and shoot from 5-8 feet behind the arc, literally the only guy who could do that on a regular basis.
Lebron will occasionally fire from out there but it isn't really part of his game. Kobe will shoot those shots, but nobody is afraid of his deep shooting.

Jimmer Fredette would pull up from that far at BYU, but I haven't seen him do it as much in the pros.

What does this have to do with anything? LeBron can shoot deep just as well as he can from standard 3 point line. It's not necessarily about how good of a shooter you are, but more of limiting the percentage dropoff from long range compared to regular 3 pointers. LeBron probably ranks the highest in that regard.
JR's up there too. Anyone see his all-american game? He was shooting from like 3 feet behind the line on purpose to show off his range, and he was actually draining them.

Outside of 10 feet, Lebron's distance from the basket seems to have virtually no bearing on the likelihood he'll make a shot.
As streaky as he is, his range is awesome. The 09' game-winner in Orlando comes to mind.

chris paul when he wants to can hit 3s from close to half court pretty efficiently (in long 3 standards)
but how has no one said chauncey billups? hes the king of long 3s
Marco Belinelli can throw up miracle half court either 3/4 court shots to beat the buzzer better than anyone in the nba
Thunder Dan Majerle was the best at the long range 3. Stephon Marburg gets an honorable mention as well

On the practice vids, LeBron has the easiest looking jumpshot from half court I've seen. He doesn't use his body to propel the shot, he shoots them like a normal jumper.

This three by Lebron is pretty deep
I don't root for Lebron now, but the Lebron in the photo is one I would definitely cheer for. To pull up for a jumpshot right after crossing half court when your team is up double digits is hilariously great. Now, I feel that he is more concerned with his stats so we won't get these amazing shots anymore, even though he's capable.

Vince Carter End Thread. It's not even close.
The guy is super strong yet his strength is underrated. He can shoot a 3 pt shot from full court SITTING DOWN and it looks effortless.
All 3 pointers he takes EVEN those near HALF COURT look effortless. UNLIKE KOBE.
VC is actually super strong but underrated...go check out his dunk on alonzo mourning and VC BACKING DOWN BLAKE GRIFFIN like he is nothing.
