200+ injured, 70+ in critical condition. No confirmed deaths.

Apparently it was a fire, and the the firefighters came in and extinguished the wrong materials which triggered the explosion. They basically fueled the fire. But nobody wants to blame them completely yet(because they did go in to help), and I don't know how accurate that is either.

Ammonium nitrate is the most common fertilizer in the world, and it's also a powerful high explosive. Although usually it's very stable, it can be set off by large fires is certain conditions are met.

My guess is it's the first tank exploding and then a larger tank goes up.

Also the flash of light would hit the camera before the sound would.

Highly stable explosives, like ammoniun nitrate, do not usually explode when ignited, instead they harmlessly decompose (in this specific case, into water and nitrous oxide). In order for AN to detonate due to fire, there needs to be a ddt reaction (deflagration to detonation), which may happen under intense fire if the chemical is stored in an enclosed space. Therefore, the flash of light mentioned (which, by the way, I fail to see), it may be the deflagration of some AN, priming the detonation of the rest of the material via shock.

Yeah from what I understand the first explosion wasn't so bad, the problem was it knocked loose all that fertilizer and when it is floating around in the air as dust it becomes extremely hazardous.

best commercial kolaches in texas. As some of you probably know, the big push in chemical fertilizers came after WWII as a way to use the chemicals formerly used to manufacture munitions. This is not surprising, but it is very sad. Heres an interesting take on how companies lie about the potential for catastrophe.

No, ammonium nitrate does not "detonate" or ignite on its own. It is an oxidizing agent.
I guess I should clarify, there is no deflagration of AN. There is igniting of combustible material then self sustaining reactions through oxidation which leads to an explosion or detonation.
There was one caveat I missed. Nitrous oxide is combustible at high enough temperatures. Still this is nitrous oxide as the fuel, ammonium nitrate as the oxidizer.

Why the hell was a fertilizer plant so close to a residential area? The plant had the absolute bare minimum in place in terms of safety procedures. Situations like this are EXACTLY why potentially harmful industries needs to have strong government regulations. Rick dbag Perry has been so busy cutting regulations in the name of the free market....the invisible hand of the free market sure as hell did not protect these poor folks.

The best part about this whole thing is the cost of this accident will end up being paid for by all american tax payers, instead of just the "self-sufficient small government" texans.

The only reason that Texas is able to slash/ignore regulations like this is because when shit really hits the fan the federal government will come clean up the mess for them. American taxpayers in other states are directly subsidizing the cost of doing business in Texas by paying for disasters like this.

I am baffled by the fact that no charges have been filed over this disaster.

I'm dumb.. help me out here ^^^^

It seems the company was dealing with extremely hazardous materials and kept downplaying the risk of them. Letting the town build houses and schools next to what turned out to be a virtual ammo dump. So the maximum insurance policy they paid only provided for a million dollars in payout. You would think blowing up a school or many houses in the case of an accident would require the company to have higher liability and thus pay more for insurance.

The company seems to have lied about what they were doing and cut corners involving safety.

me too...but as far as I know this wasn't a terrorist act...rather just an accident

more people die in drunk driving accidents than both Boston and Texas combined in just one night in the US...

it is the terrorist nature of the Boston explosion that makes it "big news"
