Iberians and Basques is what they would call themselves, but their DNA is closest resembled to French, Greeks, Italians, and British, so yes they are white.

Congrats to Marc. :applause:

A lot of posters here have somehow inexplicably convinced themselves that this was a down year for the award and as such a wide open race, but IMO that certainly was not the case. Gasol, Noah, and Duncan really separated themselves as the class of the league defensively (and Garnett + Sanders, among others had a strong season).

He was very good this year, Bucks defensive ppp has been very impressive with him on the floor but Larry doesn't deserve it for the sole reason of him not playing enough minutes next year I think we have one of the best defensive anchors in the league.

I found this article very interesting, take a look!

http://www.brewhoop.com/2013/4/17/4225116/larry-sanders-2013-nba-defensive-player-of-the-year

Thanks, I'll take a look.

Interestingly, Sanders already seems to be what I thought Ibaka could become. Though Serge has become one of the best PnR defenders in the league, he's not quite the interior presence of Sanders, who very well could become the next great defensive anchor in the league.

Yes? What else?

Well, I was thinking they were more Hispanic than anything else (the area was deemed "Hispania" by the Romans) but calling someone that here in the US will get you various responses because of the convoluted perception of the term "Hispanic."

I understand there are white people in Spain but I wouldn't necessarily refer to all of them as white.

I'd really love to ask Pau and Marc what they think of themselves.

This. Too often fans and media pundits misconceive adept shot-blocking or pick-pocketing as indicators of great defense.

Yeah, those elements certainly help, but elite defense goes beyond statistical value. Ibaka is a great weak-side helper and improved in pick and roll coverage. But, he is so overrated as a man to man defender.

He should be better than he is as a defensive anchor for his team.

Also if you're white you are going to be called white anywhere (except the US for some reason). So they will call themselves white.

Even though I am white by a random american guy standards I wasn't white but "light skinned".

Because something something OH LOOK AT DEM CHASEDOWN BLOCKS! Ibaka is a mediocre defender with very low IQ, Bosh is a much better defender than him.

Funny thing is Lebron gets overrated for his chasedown ability and overpraised as the best chasedown blocker in the league, yet he doesn't even average block a game. But Wade averages that for his career. Just strange how the "most athletic player in history of NBA" can't even get a block a game, that just tells you what you need to know about his defense. He doesn't contest shots heavily, he doesn't challenge shots in the paint, he tries not to pick up fouls and is too careful at times. Especially this year he has been coasting too much, contesting late, letting scrubs blow by him and not challenging in the post when they do. But as long as he gets a pretty chasedown every 5 games and provides his usual help D he gets lot of DPOY votes.

After coming back from an ACL injury? That toothpick will win DPOY in his rookie year playing against bigger stronger players and the best athletes on the planet? A 19 year old kid will be a force down low against actual MEN?

Wonder how many times that has happened in NBA history, a rookie winning DPOY, much less a 19 year old 220 pound rookie.

Josh Smith is just as good if not better, he was doing chasedown blocks before Lebron made it "his thing". Lebron only really embarasses little PGs that are so scared of him they **** it up, like Rondo. But there are also other players who don't give a shit about him behind them and fake him out and make the easy basket.

Too bad they don't make chasedown block statistics to actually compare his block to fail ratio.

Yea that's why Clippers raped his whole team in past 2 games rebounding wise, because Marc Gasol is a good rebounder but "just lets his teammates get them".:oldlol:

He doesn't even have double digit rebounds after 2 games, a 7 foot 270 pound Center. He is just as soft and passive as his bro Pow! Gasoft.

If voters are only going to consider amount of blocked shots then why not give it to Larry Sanders. He is a legit interior defender unlike Ibaka who just goes up for blocks. Ibaka isnt even a top 3 defender on his team, I consider Westbrook, Sefolosha and Collision better and more impactful.

Because Sanders isn't a nice guy, he had problems with techs and refs don't like him, so the media has the same attitude. And playing for Bucks don't help either, doubt these voters even saw 3 Bucks games whole season.:oldlol:

After coming back from an ACL injury? That toothpick will win DPOY in his rookie year playing against bigger stronger players and the best athletes on the planet? A 19 year old kid will be a force down low against actual MEN?

Wonder how many times that has happened in NBA history, a rookie winning DPOY, much less a 19 year old 220 pound rookie.

He's quickly recovering from his ACL injury. I hope the Phoenix Suns draft Nerlens Noel.

The first white guy to win it since Mark Eaton in 1989!

Larry Sanders deserved it more than he did..

Larry Sanders deserved it more than he did..
Blocked shots aren't everything. Marc Gasol anchors that defense and does a great job of it. Well deserving winner of the award.

I don't really see it. He's a solid defender on a team with the best perimeter defense in the NBA. Better then LeBron winning it I guess.

Gasol's stingy defense earns award

Since the 1982-83 season, when the first Defensive Player of the Year award was given, a power forward or a center has won it 22 of the 30 times.

Marc Gasol will be the 23rd this season as he accepts the award for the first time in his career, becoming the second first-time winner in as many years. Last season New York Knicks center Tyson Chandler was the recipient of the award for the first time.

Since 1996-97, Gasol is tied for the fourth-highest defensive efficiency among Defensive Player of the Year award winners.

Defensive efficiency
By Defensive Player of the Year winners
Player Def Eff
1998-99 Alonzo Mourning 92.9
2003-04 Ron Artest 93.7
2007-08 Kevin Garnett 94.4
2012-13 Marc Gasol 95.4
2000-01 Dikembe Mutombo 95.4

Gasol averaged 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals for Memphis, which allowed 97.4 points per 100 possessions this season, second only to the Indiana Pacers (96.6 points per 100 possessions).

The Grizzlies’ defensive efficiency was 95.4 with Gasol on the court. However, with him on the bench, that number jumped to 102.2.

The anchor

With Gasol on the court, teams turned the ball over against the Grizzlies 17.3 percent of the time, a rate that would have led the NBA (the Clippers' 17.2 percent led the league this season). However, with him off the court, that percentage dropped to 15.8 percent, which would've ranked 12th.

His impact on the defensive end extends to turning turnovers into points, as well. With Gasol on the court, Memphis averaged 18 points per game off turnovers, which would've ranked fourth in the NBA. But with him off the court, the team averaged 15.5 points, which would've rank 20th.

Defense wins games

According to basketball-reference.com, Gasol had 5.4 defensive win shares this season, which was second in the NBA behind Paul George. Defensive win shares are an estimate of the number of wins contributed by a player due to his defense.

Gasol’s defensive efficiency of 95.4 points per 100 possessions allowed was third in the NBA (minimum 2,000 minutes, 126 players). Teammates Tony Allen (94.3) and Mike Conley (95.1) were first and second, respectively.

The second half of the season was when Gasol really earned the honor. Gasol’s defensive efficiency after the All-Star break was 92.1, which was best in the NBA.

On the ball

As an on-ball defender, Gasol led the NBA with his 0.76 points per play allowed per game (minimum 800 plays, 55 players). Players turned the ball over an average of 14.5 times per game when covered by Gasol, sixth best in the league.
