Microsoft confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in tech: The next Xbox will be revealed on May 21.
The company on Wednesday morning sent out invites to the media for a product unveiling.
"A New Generation Revealed," the invitation reads. "Don Mattrick and the Xbox team invite you to the Xbox campus for a special unveiling."
The company plans to broadcast the unveiling live on the Xbox, as well as on Spike TV.
Earlier this month, long-time Microsoft blogger Paul Thurrott broke the news of the date of the debut in an interview with the video blog "What the Tech."

The Xbox 360 has been the king of consoles in the United States for more than two years, outselling the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3. So Microsoft has been in no rush to debut a new version, preferring instead to let rivals show their hands.

That's why, the unveiling of the next Xbox will be the last from the big three companies in the next generation of video game consoles. In a bid to get ahead of the competition and jumpstart its sagging console fortunes, Nintendo launched its Wii U, which comes with tablet-like game controller that doubles as a second screen, last November. And last February, Sony took the wraps off the PlayStation 4, which will have a far zippier graphics engine and beefier storage than its 7-year-old predecessor.

Microsoft's gathering will come just three weeks before the giant E3 gaming trade show in Los Angeles. The software giant is likely to unveil the technical specifics as well as talk about the entertainment focus of the Xbox that go beyond gaming at its May 21 event. If history is a good gauge, the company will show off some of the biggest gaming titles for the next Xbox at E3.

Xbox supported for a year after the 360 was released and then dropped it. I mean just utterly dropped any new game releases anything. they kept up the live servers (and think the dashboard got an update) but that was it.

There's probably gonna be some difference in load times especially with AC4, and I'd assume GTA 5. Probably some difference with graphics. But it won't be a lot. It'll take awhile for the graphics difference to unfold because no one wants to design a game for the 360 and then go design it for the 1, since you can't easily port it over like that. Although Ubisoft has said there's gonna be no load times whatsoever. So we'll see how that unfolds.

Price/release date we might get at E3. Sony and M$ are gonna play cat and mouse on this and see who releases the info first. Because neither one was to price the thing too high and suffer a loss of sales like PS3 did, and then alienate the market for an extended period of time. But they also don't want to lose too much on the consoles at first. Especially since a lot of people may not upgrade right away.

And the used games thing right now is iffy at best. Expect to be screwed, but pray you're not.

Really? I hadn't seen that. I'm surprised considering they LOVE to charge a shitload for that special M$ labeled shit.

SSD is way way too expensive for any meaningful storage. I mean 128 is still kinda expensive for a pc. I think if they had waited 2 years or so they might have. But 500gbs is relatively a better deal than 64 or 128 SSD. Plus I don't think a SSD would help either console that much. Maybe xbox since it's a windows 8 kernel but I doubt it. So I don't think the trade off is worth it.

You do realize why Sony has had more exclusives than Microsoft? The PS3 has the Blu-ray discs. Game storage was really easy for the PlayStation. Look at FFXIII and what Kojima had to say about Metal Gear Solid 4 having 7 discs on the 360.

Also, since the PlayStation 1. Sony has AAA+ developers and still do. That's why there's an immense library. Unfortunately, Insomniac Games have lost it completely with their ambition of money.


As for the PS4, I'll put it to you this way. The PS4 is already built to give you the quality of features right from the start while on the XboxOne will take years to build that efficiency. It'll get there but the PS4 will have the head start.

As for the fee of used games, its actually a good thing from what I read. You'll be allowed to keep an installation within the hard drive. Meaning, it should work as an emulator thanks to the Cloud services. While Sony's Cloud Services (Galkai) you'll be able to open up a library filled of games and you won't have to download anything. You select and just play, obviously there's an online subscription for that but the positive part about it. It already comes with PlayStation Plus. So if you're used to paying for Live then you shouldn't mind paying that extra service from Sony. And yes, to play online games is still free for the PlayStation.

Why would you even ask that...the only thing that they'll be charging will be the new added features especially Galkai with the PlayStation Plus services. You know how many customers Sony would lose If online isn't free.

What's funny about M$ is that Too Human was so panned by everyone when it released, but now it's almost a cult classic type game. Fable was solid till they ruined it. Honestly I'd put it like Nintendo slight, but it's definitely there difference between them and Sony. Then way down there is M$.

What's funny about M$ is that Too Human was so panned by everyone when it released, but now it's almost a cult classic type game. Fable was solid till they ruined it. That's the difference between M$ and Sony. Sony games fail? They either try again after awhile, or the studio goes on makes a new game.

EA is garbage, their best minds left to 2K years ago and it shows. If this game isn't a major success, I don't think they'll be able to renew their license with the NBAPA. Kinda bad considering no competition will give 2K no incentive to introduce new gameplay elements. Either way EA sucks.

Best thing about this is the NCAA rights will be up once gaming on the next-gen is here. Next gen NCAA 2K game??? A man can only dream...

A man can only dream...I haven't subscribed much to the idea of NBA video game companies ceasing to try to improve when there's a lack of competition. However, I do think those lone companies may be more likely to experiment and perhaps depart from the safe and true gameplan. I think 2K's done a little bit of that with their dabbling into their golden coins system and MyTeam. Both have little to do with the actual NBA experience but being the lead dog, it feels like 2K's taking a little liberty to get out and experiment a little bit.

That said, I'm cool with one company making a sports game as long as the company's making a game I like. Unfortunately, MVP '05 was my favorite baseball series and NFL 2K was my favorite football series. Also, NBA 2K13's slight direction skew worries me a little bit. If they continue moving in the direction that reminds me of old NBA Live games (find the most popular artists to do your soundtracks, find what's most popular on Facebook and make that your game's primary focus, etc.) I'm going to be yearning for an alternative, just as I did when NBA Live 2002 came up so short to me over ten years ago.

Spartan Assault is a tablet/windows phone game though, and while officially announced today Microsoft registered the domain a few days ago. Plus considering the logo isn't the same as the trailer I'm leaning towards fake on this one.
