Looking at this one:

http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/sc/greenville/woodside/

I lived on the right side of that zone...Birnie street. A friend of mine did too. For like 4 years.

1 in 12 chance of being a victim?

I dont know. It was pretty hoodish...and the kid across the street did get arrested while fighting the police....but thats about it.

I remember reading that for its population my current city(Greenville) was short of only DC and Baltimore nationwide in crime. But ive been a "victim" just once in my life. And that was getting my 360 stolen years ago.

Was a string of murders last winter though....

5, 8, and 16. Somewhat near another one now that I take a closer look. We just didnt call it what they did.

I lived in Camden NJ from 6-13 and left before high school because being a white kid in Woodrow Wilson HS is asking for trouble. I lived in the worst neighborhood too, North (not that the other one are any nicer, just North is all open air drug markets). It was a 3rd world country then, and it's the same way to this day.

Detroit = avoidTruthfully, I'll fully admit there are some areas that are just about as bad as advertised, but there's a fair amount of good spots in Detroit too. For instance, hanging out and going for a stroll at Livernois and W. Chicago is a little different than chilling out downtown after a game at Comerica Park.

For a long time growing up, I'd really only catch fleeting glances at the bad parts as I was driving into the downtown area, so it didn't seem too bad. But if you know the right wrong places to go, things can get rough pretty quick. It's startling to see how quickly you can go from a nice, pleasant, clean neighborhood to one where 90% of the houses on any given street have been completely demolished while the few that remain are often burnt or in shambles.

My most recent trip out that way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asr5LR1TU_8

Another, featuring piles of garbage and abandoned boats (yes, boats) on what used to be a busy and functional neighborhood street: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHqHXjEqjbE

When my mom used to live down there it was okay, but over the last decade she lived there houses would be stripped to the ground and burned within one day of them becoming abandoned. I could go to her house and everything was okay, nobody would mess with me, but 1 week after she moved out she went back and the house everything had been stripped out of her house. (That was about 3 years ago)

Flint and Saginaw are justified. We Michiganders call Saginaw "Sagnasty" for a reason. Flint's one of the most depressing places in the world, especially when you pass by on the freeway at night. Hell, I once saw a shirt that said "Welcome to Flint, our crackhouse beats your crackhouse."

Can't speak for any of the Detroit neighborhoods but like any city, it depends on where you go.

The pictures are sometimes taken at different times, even if the view is only a 10 feet away from the previous one. That first image is the only one where I saw those dudes

Cruise a couple streets over and you'll see other people sporting red, including what looked to be an 8 year old kid. Pretty sure they aren't wearing those shirts for the car wash.

Was talking about this with my girlfriend the other day. We were watching a tv show in new york and they were talking about buying an apartment and flat out said this neighbourhood is too dangerous to even live in.
In Australia we have some rough neighbourhoods and rough parts where people hang out but on the whole I don't think there would be any suburb I'd be too scared to live in. Sure I wouldn't buy right near some commission flats or certain train stations/alley ways but the WHOLE suburb isn't a no go zone.
Hard to understand for me how people have to just avoid entire areas of their city because of crime.

The occurrence of inner city crime, in no way is a good argument against preventing mass shootings in upper middle class suburbs.

We should be trying to deal with both problems.

I used to live in East NY on Miller. East NY still has a lot of shootings. Don't know the statistics(and I never really trusted them anyway...there was that scandal a few years ago in the 81st precinct for example where they were intentionally lowering crime statistics) but regardless, shootings are still quite common.

Wow, Yeah, I didn't recall much violence, but it was a typical Brooklyn neighborhood, when I was there on Penn and right off of Livonia by PS13 (Roberto Clemente). If you went down toward Sheffield and Georgia from where I lived it was bad. But going up toward Van Sicilan I never ran into anything. Most of the time I was going toward Linden and played a lot of ball in Gerswhin.

As far as violence, it was fine during the daytime, but not so much at night, though that tends to be the case in most neighborhoods that are more violent, at least that I've been to. I mean aside from the more obvious things, there were specific incidents that reminded you that you had to be more careful than most places in NY. Actually, right from the start since a girl had just been stabbed in my building shortly before I moved in, though it apparently wasn't a break in, and it wasn't a fatal stabbing, she apparently just let the wrong guy in to her room. But I do also remember incidents around my block such as 3 murders in about a week, all not far from my block, though none actually on it, 2 cops getting killed in a relatively short period, probably no more than 2 months apart(one of these occurring pretty close to where I lived), a young kid who I think was 17 at the time getting stabbed to death because he was mistaken for someone else.

I'm also familiar with parts of Brownsville since it's right next to East NY, and I had several friends who lived there so I went there a lot. Where I use to hang out in Brownsville wasn't a war zone or anything, but again, a place you had to watch out. I don't recall as many violent incidents around there(Dean, Pleasant ect.) off the top of my head, but a lot of drugs, particularly crack, and there were some Bloods I'd see around there.

What's been great about NY in more recent years(since you can't eliminate crime completely in large cities) is that many of the neighborhoods that have had the bad reputations for years now have quite a few sections that aren't so bad. There still tends to be blocks in all of them where it's pretty dangerous, but some of these neighborhoods you can't really generalize anymore. Bed-Stuy is a good example. That's pretty mixed now.

Can't really speak much about the Bronx since I'm not as familiar with it. But regarding the South Bronx, my cousin died in Hunts Point back in '04, and that part was still pretty bad back then.
