guru imo, was carried by a premiere producer

rakim, definitely a trailblazer and good for head nodding but he aint all that

AZ, iunno never been much impressed, i dun really like his voice much

prodigy, thug rap and mostly just another dude carried by his partner's beats

far as underrated there are too many to count, lotta guys who never got limelight thru no fault of their own

-p.tiddy-

Rakim is overrated the most on lists IMO...as well as Pac, too many people think Pac is the greatest of all time, he isn't even close

Spice-1 was and has been underrated, and Freddie Gibbs is underrated today

also I actually think Lil Wayne is underrated...in that most people feel like he is complete garbage...he isn't a great lyricist or on Pac's level or Rakim's for that matter, not even close...however, Wayne has been dominating the radio for like 8 years now...currently half the songs that are on the air feature Wayne...he deserves cred for not only staying relevant for so long but also completely dominating in terms of sales and popularity. He is more talented of an artist than most people want to admit.

lol u always say this exact same thing but ur just pigeonholing a caricature of a supposed hipster. the truth is that its sorta natural by definition that the more overrated characters of rap would be the ones who get a lot of media play and the most underrated characters of rap would be the ones who dont.... fame isn't a meritocracy, for anything but especially not for art. its at least half a crap shoot which inevitably leads to a bunch of invalids making their way into that 'goat list' lexicon and guys who have all the talent in the world but none of the luck. just the way things work out.

btw mf doom couldn't possibly be underrated. anybody who listens to him ranks him appropriately as one of the most outrageous off the wall personalities in hip hop history, among the best producers ever, and a reasonable rapper with a dope voice. his music doesn't lend himself to radio, doesn't make him underrated, just underplayed

Agree with 2 Pac being goat. He's a good rapper, over homo erotic r and b beats. I can't listen to his albums...

But the r???? Comeon!!!! Rakim's delivery, voice and flow is superb. Definitely one of the goats for his era...

Lil Wayne can rap. Hard worker, has a true love and dedication that few have and it shows in his raps. He does need to flip his style up. Time to switch up the clever metaphor/similies raps...

Bumpin him since had to gat ya ..goat gang ster rap song btw... Seen him evolve as all real artists do. Sure people know him as gang member rapper first, then that siccness Shit, then now serial killer, but sprinkled in are some really good Shit. And as a rapper , he rips Shit ...

What he's been doing has been working for him for a very long time though, he probably sees no reason to change when what he does now is constantky #1 on the billboards

Honestly, if Wayne even tried to get deep and meaningful I don't think it would work...he found his niche...goofy comedian swag club stuff

old weezy from carter 1 & especially 2, as well as some of his mixtapes like dedication and draught series that he was making right in the middle of his rise to stardom..... he still had a few clever lines here and there but it didnt dominate his verses. it felt more natural. then he became a punchline machine after he blew up and thats why most people dont like him. all style no substance.

he was never one for hypopylatin on the nature of man or anything like that but that doesnt mean he has to be a fking gag reel

that is what he does...not everything has to be overly serious IMO

http://anotherfashionbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/LW.jpg

instead of hating him for what he isn't people should just accept him for what he is...and IMO he is a legit "artist"...I think he is somewhat a pioneer in the "gag reel" style and half the rappers out today are biting off him...he is also unique to himself, how many other rappers skateboard?

I feel a bit strange sticking up for Weezy because I don't really think he is that great, and I dislike the majority of the stuff he puts out, but the amount of time he has absolutely dominated the billboards repeatedly just can't be denied...he is obviously doing something right

dude i just said he wasn't always a gag reel. theres nothing wrong with it a guess, just what i also said about it not really sounding natural.... like ur trying to hard instead of just flowing. listen to carter 2 and carter 3 back2back and i think you'll find, generally speaking anyway its never hard and fast with artistic development, that the transition i described holds.

which side of the transition you prefer is up to personal preference. but i think a lot of the backlash wayne got after he blew up to epic proportions, besides just general hatred of whatevers popular by the industry-h8rs, was a factor of his substanceless styling, joke after joke all following only a handful of formulas that just weren't appealing. to a lot of people anyway, myself included.

it's not about deep vs funny or any dumb black and white dichotomy like that. its about too much of one thing and not enough balance... it happens to a lot of artists i imagine. and it kind of stunts their artistic growth. they get famous because they do something really well, and that something was a product of their creative instinct, like straight from the gut. but once people love that initial product, they start banking on that and attempting to recreate their initial success. but then every ensuing project just sounds like an imitation or replica of the first, ie not as good.... and worse than that, they become one-dimensional to the point that the masses get bored with them.

weezy wasn't exactly like that, he just fostered a style that became excessive. but there are parallels i think.

I'm pretty sure without me is on Eminem show not MMLP.
Could be wrong though.
Oh wait yes, Marshall MAthers is that one where he sang about killing his wife and dumping her on the river. Eminem show is the one where he talked about killing her mother and burying her and his past int he backyard.

How bout this...ill pm you my phone number, we can finish this discussion. But you sing melodically like in all his hooks, (bitch or bitch made n.I.gga, had corny singing and ill talk like a g as in had 2 gat ya... Deal ?

Pac is a character bro. How many years did it take to go from going to ballet class, to back up dancing for digital underground, to then all a sudden thugged out? Lol. He even said "I didn't have a record till I made a record" smh. Buster. I've been down with gangs. In one rightnnow. Hardest krew along the I5 corridor.. and in the 90's we wernet bumpin hat homo Shit folk...

If you think having melody is corny or bitch made then that's
your wack ass opinion. IDGAF if he went to school for arts,
he obviously had to move his broke ass to the Bay(Marin) and started
soaking up game. That's when he started being thug
because the Bay forces you to adapt to that environment.
And you being in a gang means what? Nothing.
You like Lynch but he ain't super thug either. He's a character too.
That fool ain't on no kill you up bang bang shit.
That fool on that I met you at elk grove and smoke 2 blunts with you
on the way to Arden Fair mall.

Eminem USED to be dope, his last few albums have been absolutely terrible.

I am one of those people who do believe Tupac is overrated also, I think his death factors into that a lot. No doubt he is one of the greats, but people act as if he is the MJ of rap, and it's just not true in my opinion.

Don't know about that. Kid N Play went the movie route and if anything Will Smith is overrated.

I wonder how many times this guy's name has been brought up on this board.

I bought that "got lyrics?" album during my underground phase. He's nice. Great spoken word artist, but he's a bit wordy and unwieldy as an MC.

Eminem would be more overrated than underrated.
He underachieved imo. He could of been better.

I'm assuming you mean record sales wise, because lyrically Eminem from 96-01 range was something of which we have never & will never see again.

Dude could make you laugh, cry, cringe & smile all in one line, his use of alliterations and rhyme schemes are stuff of legend and to this day rappers fail to emulate his style.

as far as record sales go..
